With Vice President Kamala Harris becoming the new Democratic front-runner after President Biden suddenly dropped out of the race on Sunday, her coconut tree meme has resurfaced and gone viral, with members of her own party getting in on the action.
In the last 24 hours, Democratic governors, senators and PACs have voiced their support for Harris while mentioning coconut trees or adding coconut emojis to their posts.
The meme stems from a random moment in a speech Harris gave in May last year as she was swearing in commissioners for the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Hispanics.

The funny part of the video is- When a politician tells a story like that, it’s to try and get a laugh and smile from the audience. When she laughs after saying it, that is supposed to subconsciously cue the audience to laugh as well. However, they are totally silent.

In politics, it's an especially important concept to understand when talking about racism, there still is racism in the world because people are affected by the past, US segregation for instance still has an impact on the psyche of people

The answer is that, obviously, money does not grow on trees. The point is that money takes effort to obtain and is not unlimited as it would be if it came from a tree.
Harris’s metaphor is almost identical in its structure. She repeats her point twice in this speech, “Everything is in context." The rhetorical question, “Did you fall from a coconut tree?” is a metaphor. If you were a coconut that fell from a tree, you would have no unique family history and you would not live in a society. There would be no pertinent historical or present-day context to your existence. The answer to the rhetorical question is that no, obviously you did not fall from a coconut tree. The point is that where you come from and the history of the world that you live in matter and affect your existence, unlike a fruit that falls from a tree.
The two phrases are incredibly similar, both use the metaphor of a tree to emphasize the importance of where things come from. This is literally taught in 3rd-grade English.
