Wow, it was probably 20 years ago when I visited this historic time piece. She looks all new and shiny now with enough modern day lighting to discourage unwanted Cockroaches. BTW, you did a fantastic job filming this and thank you for posting it for all to see. 🇺🇸💥💥💥
That's true. The USS Pampanito's forward-mounted deck gun was changed to an aft mount during a major refit in the summer of 1945, in preparation for the planned invasion of Japan. This refit replaced the forward 4" 50 cal gun with a 5" 25 cal wet mount gun located aft. Additionally, the submarine was equipped with two Bofors 40mm guns and a twin 20mm Oerlikon, among other small arms, in this final configuration The specific modifications to the deck foundation necessary to support different gun mounts were carried out around this time as well. The Pampanito left Hunters' Point Naval Shipyard on July 13, 1945, for gun structural firing tests at a test range outside the Golden Gate, indicating that the changes were made during this period By the end of World War II, the USS Pampanito had a 5" 25 cal gun on the aft main deck, which aligns with the changes made during the summer of 1945 refit. This configuration reflects the tactical adjustments and the evolution in armament typical of the period
