- Totentanz Op. 70 No.2 by Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877-1933)
Performed by Jonathan Scott on a 1908 Art Harmonium by Mustel, Paris (Serial Number 1924 - 1057) at Victoria Hall, Saltaire.
From the collection of Pam & Phil Fluke, Harmonium Museum, Saltaire.
Totentanz (Dance of Death) is the second of two 'Orchestral Studies' for Art Harmonium written by Karg-Elert in 1907.
It is based on the following verse:
DANCE OF DEATH
A vision. Death as a musician. On a bone harmonica he plays a bizarre dance, every now and then making a pause and a scornful laughing and grimacing.
The dancers spin in grotesque rhythms, sometimes orgiastic, wild, sometimes shadowy and transfigured.
The dance scatters.
Quietly from the invisible depths lament the voices of the departed. A child, a virgin, a young man, a man.
Their laments go unheard in the awful loneliness.
Once again the musician clearly raises the horrific bone harmonica.
The dance begins again. A clap of thunder - and the nightmare is over.
(Translation from the German by Jonathan Scott)

Brilliant, haunting and extremely virtuoso performance.
It keeps you coming back to it.
Thanks Jonathan you are a master and a poet.
Thank you. I keep coming back to this performance every few months. You don't hear Karg-Elert often, and this is a good interpretation on an appropriate harmonium.
Thats exact the music an art harmonium is built for! That´s why Aristide Cavaille Coll called the harmonium "orgue expressif"! Wonderful!
I don't often use the word "mindblowing" but no other word comes to mind. A virtuoso performance both musically and technically on an instrument in as-new condition.
FANTASTIC!!!
Long time ago I didn't hear such a magnificent performance.
You are an incredible musician.
Congratulations!!!!!
Masterly playing on a superb instrument. A revelation. Thank you so much.
superbrilliant performance, like your vid also. It's great how you take your time between the different parts to regitstrate! adore the stop which omits an octave: sooo spooky. thx for sharing!
Brilliant video, and excellent demonstration of a fascinating instrument.
Indeed the music where the harmonium is built for. Excellent performance
Superb! Virtuoso playing, magnificent instrument, highly original piece and ideal setting. If anyone still doubts the musicality of the reed organ, this performance should jerk them into a rethink.
Many thanks for the posting.
I didnt know you could sustain bass notes on a harmonium
It's called Prolongement, but not every instrument has this feature. For example when maestro Jonathan played his own Mustel in his other videos he had to use small metal weight instead
What an amazing piece and a terrific performance!!! Bravo! Brilliant!
I have read that Karg-Elert's great strength as a performer was as a virtuoso on the Kunst-Harmonium. Thank you so much for bringing this facet of this composer's artistry so vividly back to life! Your performance is superb in every way.
I arranged this piece for woodwind quintet. Great to hear it in its original state.
1:33 It would be interesting to find out if John Williams knew this piece when he worked on Star Wars ...
A seemingly simple instrument , touched by genius, the result could not be otherwise: wonderful!!!
Sehr gute Interpretation (und Registrierung). Bravo!
Thanks, Jonathan for uploading this unusual piece!. A magnificent performance.
Extraordinary performance ! Congrats from Brazil !
I wasn't aware that this harmonium could lock keys down (at 2:55). What a wonderfully handy "stop"!
wonderful really enjoyed this and so lovely to see the Victoria Hall again.
Amazing!
Pure magic! Surely a unique performance! Pure genius. The venue?
Phantastic!
I have never heard a reed organ played so well. :-)
Wonderful playing and a superbly made video. Many thanks.
thank you for this truly poetic performance! through you karg-elert is heard once more. your musicianship is amazing. thank you for sharing your talents with us. please continue to post your latest endeavors with us on youtube, jb
Only a great musician/artist can make so much poetry on such a simple reed organ!
It's not a simple reed Organ: It's an art harmonium and they were built exactly for the cause of this expressiv playing.
It is not a simple reed organ. It is a Mustel Organ. A genuine instrument in it's own right.
Brilliant but certainly not boring!
The reed was also used electronically in the late 1920's until 1961 when Wurlitzer stopped manufacture of their electrostatic (ES for short) reed organs. It was the ES reed technology of the Everett Piano & Organ Co. that Wurlitzer licensed from Everett in the early 40's during the war, when the pipe organ factory was retooled for bomb making. In around 45' they bought the patent and made further refinements. It is a very non-invasive design. Search Nshos reed
its my favorite theme
@wildeval
Such a Mustel harmonium is not a simple organ.
