After the destruction of their hometown, childhood friends Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro make a pact to become officers in the Defense Force-a militarized organization tasked with protecting Japan from colossal monsters known as "kaiju." Decades later, the 32-year-old Kafka has all but given up on his dreams of heroism. Instead, he cleans up the remains of the slaughtered kaiju after they are defeated by valiant soldiers-including Mina, who has successfully achieved their shared goal.
Upon meeting his new coworker, Reno Ichikawa, Kafka faces a mirror of his past self: an ambitious young man whose one desire is to fight as a member of the Defense Force. Unfortunately, the two are soon involved in a freak encounter with a rogue kaijuu. Though Kafka demonstrates his innate heroic nature and rescues Reno from certain doom, he is left gravely injured.
While both men recover in a hospital, Kafka is seemingly attacked by another one of the beasts. As a result, he gains the ability to transform into a humanoid kaijuu with the strength and powers of the massive monsters menacing Japan. Dubbed "Kaijuu No. 8" by the military, Kafka resolves to use his newfound gifts for the greater good. Tied together by mutual respect, Kafka and Reno set out to join warriors like Mina at the forefront of the Defense Force.

Funny how Kafka's Kaiju is all about wiping off it's own race and what does Isao do? Bring a kaiju presence before him and when Kafka decides not to fight Isao the parasite just goes "we only kill kaiju, don't think about who or what. Kaiju bad, kaiju unalive agenda."
This is honestly one of my favorite tropes that I see so rarely. "I will force you to be what I already think you are: a monster I must destroy." Then the monster emerges to defend itself to the killing end, and "live and let live" is no longer on the table, and there's no moral end to it if anyone dies, and de-escalation may not even work.
It's so rich with questions.
@@EliSkylander It can be ended, you just have to learn to forgive. Isao wife was killed by Kaiju, so it make sense why his grudge is so strong, Isao I’m pretty sure got worse after his wife death. Especially after seeing the few cut scenes.

This entire argument is pointless, fact this trope is pointless. If he was fully kaiju and wanted to kill humans that mom and her daughter would have been long dead, BETTER YET WHY WOULD HE PUT HIMSELF AT RISK TO SAVE A BASE OF HUMANS. They really need to throw away the “you saved us now i must arrest you” trope.
Kafka, at the end of the day, is still a Kaiju, the very same monsters the Defense Force swore to eradicate. He may have saved everyone (and we the audience know he's a hero), but obviously the higher-ups aren't going to trust him, especially considering that he infiltrated the ranks of the Defense Force while disguising himself as an ordinary human. For all they know, he could easily have been a spy.
That's not to say they'd be right, since Kafka is obviously a good person, but the Defense Force isn't going to just be lenient without at least 100% making sure he wouldn't hurt others, which is what they're doing here.
The story won't be interesting if that would become a scenario and all the development at that moment would be pointless.
Yeah but nobody knows if he has full control. If Kafka gets cornered, will he start killing off Defense Force people too? It'd be kind of unfortunate to have the ultimate weapon against your enemy and have it unexpectedly betray you, even unwillingly, at the most crucial moment. Now they know he won't ignore provocation, but also that the kaiju's priority is destroying kaiju, not being an ally to the defense force.
Not to mention, I'm sure they just did that as protocol. I'm confident that if they had a concrete way of making sure that Kafka's secret doesn't reach beyond the Third Division, they wouldn't have arrested him. Mina outright said that no one in the Third Division thought Kafka was bad, and were only working to make sure that he gets out of this safe and sound.

If you have known someone as a brother for a long time there's been plenty of times where platoons go awol just to side with a teamate the government deemed to say they die or are court martialed. I don’t care about spoilers, so I give full permission to manga readers to spoil the ending of this fight and what happens to Kafka. I’m curious if the story actually wants people to root for the general and the defense force instead of the literal protagonist.

We are still meant to root for Kafka. He’s not just fighting Isao, he’s fighting to hold onto to his literal humanity against the small kaiju exerting its will over him. Also, Isao is holding back because he wants Kafka to prove that he can retain his sense of self, even as kaiju.

Throughout the story, Kafka is suppressing kaijuu 8 intends to kill. If he wants to unleash kaijuu 8 power in the fullest. He needs to release the kaijuu's killer instinct, be able to control it, and then suppress even in the Manga, he is still suppressing it.
That may be the reason kafka still didnt awaken in the manga. If he did the same thing as in the new episode in the final fights against #9,he would win rather easily,but plot ig?
He is not suppressing the kaiju instincts to kill because he does kill (other kaiju) that's all it's wanting to kill that's ehy it said kaiju kill its reacting to the presence of kaiju no2 the commander is using
Kinda wanna see Kafka’s Kaiju form evolve again in the manga. 🤔
SPOILERS:
Even in his "suppressed rage" form, him learning troop-style and hoshina-style bumped him lots in the power department. He's able to overpower kaiju no. 14 with ease and oneshots fortitude 9.0 kaiju no problem. his biggest issue is kaiju no 9 is basically going broly on him that unless he and Mina gets a one shot kill against 9's core, they won't win. Kafka still wins individually but 9's resourcefulness puts him above 8 for now.
he isn't supressing anything he just isn't able to use everything the kaiju can give, the actual kaiju no 8 wants to kill kaiju, kafka does that already it's satisfied, the reason it got out of control now is because kafka is staring down a suit and weapon made from kaiju no 2, another daikaiju, yet kafka refuses to kill it despite this threat trying to kill kafka so kaiju no 8, who sees shinomiya not as a human wearing a daikaiju set but rather a fullblown daikaiju that is threatening it's life decide to take the wheel and deal with this itself rather than risk losing it's life or host

This is something that i dont understand in this kind of trope, like in demon slayer when one of the hashiras stabbed Nezuko and taunted her under the argument that she is a monster if she attacks him. Like, wtf, monster or not, you are attacking someone, what do you expect that they will do? Sit there and die?
Its to prove that they are a monster to the ones supporting the "monster"

@@GammaRingHunter yeah, the thing is that the argument is "if they attack me, they will prove that they are a monster", but they are attacking first and a person being attacked would defend themselves too. This proves nothing despite the fact that the creature being attacked have a sense of self preservation.

It’s the unique privilege of the ones with the moral and hierarchical high ground in these situations, they get to push around the “monster” and use them as a punching bag for all of their pent up rage and grief, all while saying if their victim hits back it proves them right for having attacked them.
It's important to mention this for the ones that failed to spot it, but Kaiju N°8, Not Kafka, the actual Kaiju is a Kaiju that hates all Kaiju. He's the Kaiju Killer per say, He doesn't want to kill Isao Shinomiya. But, because Isao is wearing Kaiju N°2 as a weapon. The instincts dictated that he should kill The user of those gauntlets. What makes this terrifying, is that in the manga, Kikoru has the weapons of the 6th, Hoshina has the weapons of the 10th, Narumi has the weapons of the 1st, and Ichikawa has the weapons of the 4th. So unless kafka starts to control this power, they could all be facing up against him in the future.
Also, this is just one big attack on titan reference, but idc, this anime/manga is awesome

And especially if man's can beat the breaks off of number number 9. Maybe he and number 8 come to some kind of agreement to spare his friends. Or heck maybe even like if Kafka could start introducing number 8 to the rest of his friends, almost like introducing a puppy to a puppy daycare or something like that. Kaiju number 8 just needs to learn to tell the difference between Kafka's friends using number weapons and actual kaiju's

To be fair, where the world is infested with the daily occurrence of kaiju's going on a rampage killing thousands of people. The government, captains, etc. WOULD prioritize getting rid of kaijus for the safety of civilization whereas your best friend is getting tested whether he's human or not, Mina is a captain where she neutralizes and mostly takes responsibility of the lives of the citizens, she has her own burdens and responsibilities to take care of, she still cares for kafka

The whole artstyle of this adaptation is rounder, that's why many people who saw the manga don't like it.
As a manga reader I don't mind it myself tho.
@@reptahv1954The animators deliberately made them this way. So they have less details compared to manga but they can do smoother animation easily with this artstyle.
Animations like demon slayer, CSM where its both smooth & detailed takes a lot of time. Not all studios try to do that.
Also I feel like the Isao in the manga feels taller and slimmer than the one in the anime
