Ms. Diana: You are a pleasure to listen to. As a flutist I learned plenty from your insight into Mozart's music and this well-loved concerto. Your playing is so soothing and inspiring. Thank you!

Thanks for your lovely comment. We've asked Janet Webb, Sydney Symphony Principal Flute, and here is her answer to your question: “Stylistically in Mozart, the starting note for the trill is according to the situation. Sometimes you may start on the note but sometimes according to the note before-hand. You won’t be penalised either way, but play it tastefully. There are no hard and fast rules in classical music.”
    We hope it helps!

@FALAUT101 I agree with Janet Webb. It is really an artistic choice that you can make as the performer. I personally always like to hear the upper note when it is a trill at a significant cadence, but again, it is up to you.

******* stars on all your mastercalss videos!!! Such artistry in your music is refreshing. One question I have is what helps you determine when to start a trill on the upper note or the actual note when you play Mozart? Thank you!

@ninaflute I agree. I've heard some flutists whose playing I greatly admire play nearly every single trill starting from the note above and wondered if this was the only acceptable way. Sometimes the notes in a particular passage leading to a trill are so fast that the note with which you begin a trill is barely discernable. Yet in a slower passage or movement or cadence, as you mention, where the trill is longer and more exposed, the musical difference can be better appreciated.
