    I like that you don't pretend that this an easy chore or something that deserves obsessive attention and effort. There are alot of choices as how to paint and what paints to use as you have discussed in other videos. I like your approach to the painting process, and I am looking forward to seeing the results.

    After using Alexseal with the rolling additive, I'd never use any other paint. It's expensive, but so good.

    • @SeanMcChannel
      @SeanMcChannel 8 місяців тому +2

      Absolutely agree. I painted my 37ft sailboat hull with Alexseal with the rolling additive. Best stuff there is. It is all in the prep with tons and tons of sanding with guide coat etc. and paint in shade. I painted in a boat yard shed plus plastic tent around boat for dust as mast was down for new rigging. Never paint in direct sun.

    I recently bought a fglass boat that was painted with the roll and tip method, once you have looked at the finish day after day on your boat ! Not a casual glance at someone else’s boat . You won’t expect any thing less than a spray job from then on . Its like someone keying your new car once you see the marks you Can’t ignore them

    Simple is good. I have used one part Pettit EZ Poxy top coat paint and primers on my sailboat and motorboat for years. Simple, easy, and with a little care, gives you a nice finish. On a recent finish job it made my 44 year old boat look new.

    Pettit Easypoxy is a good choice for an easy application. I strongly suggest two things. One, if you can get the yard to move the boat inside, do it for the final paint application. Being out of the wind and sun will make getting a good result much easier. It may cost a few hundred for the space and the move, but think about how much effort you put into getting the hull ready for top coating. It will be worth the cost. Second, buy some Pettit EZpoxy performance enhancer additive. That stuff gives a higher gloss surface that is much tougher than Easypoxy by itself. The paint alone will give a 2-3 year finish, the extra hundred bucks you will spend on the Performance enhancer will double the life of the paint. One way you can approach it is to only use the Performance enhancer additive for the final coat. Just make sure the first coat of paint is dry before you go to the final coat. When I had a wooden boat I painted it every year with Easypoxy for 15 years, so I have experience with this paint system.

    We have been painting our boat SaultLife just on the other side of the border in Michigan. We are doing our topside deck now, and dang it’s a lot of work. We went the 2 part route with Alexseal in hopes not to tip. Seems to be working really well on the first 2 coats. Tomorrow we will be applying the final coat. Good luck. And I know first hand this is a lot of work.

    I repainted a 1966 29 foot Colombia sloop in Seward, Alaska back in the early 90's with a 2 part epoxy paint. It turned out to be a 3 part paint as you had to add a third part I think called an accelerator or inhibiter depending on the temperature and humidity on the day you were painting. You weren't supposed to use this paint unless the ambient temperature was over 60 degrees F with low humidity. There aren't many days that nice in Seward even in the summer. It took me a month just to paint it but only because I got lucky with the weather and that doesn't include all the sanding and prep work I did prior. Thanks for the video

    Tape once, paint 4 times (the number of coats you said you’ll apply). Having the right tape, Washi premium painter’s tape is what you want. I’m trying to spread the word. I used to use 3M silver tape, which believe it or not, cost $100 or more a roll. It was that good-lasted a long time in the sun and came up clean. (It’s hell to paint when your tape is left on for more than a day in the sun and when you pull it up, it’s left residue.) Washi costs about $8 a 1” roll. I buy it from a Benjamin Moore store.

    Hi, I hope you use epoxy on your transom repair, never use polyester resin on weaved cloth as the adhesion to the fiber is not optimal.
    Also when you need to patch a damaged area, count the layer you need (you can see them on your grinding slope), and start to glue from small patch to bigger patch, never put the big one first.
    About the sanding the best tool to rough out your hull is something like the Chicago Pneumatic CP7268, especially where you have lines and ridges, then you finish with the orbital.
    The orbital can leave waves that you only see after you apply the first coat of primer while the linear sander won’t.
    To correct imperfections use polyester filler primer especially over your putty, then sand it and apply your primer over.
    Good luck with your project

    My Dad was in the navy in ww2 an when he got out started sailing by the time i came along he was refinishing boats in Tarpon springs Fla , they were mostly sponge fishing yawls back then , wooden so we would take the paint off , change any planks or ribs , caulk an paint , then for 3 bucks an hour i worked doing just what your doing on glass boats , it's hard because you have never done much of it , an 8 inch sander doesn't cost much the pads add up though and will cost more than the sander in the end , treat the sander like a saw or something , move it slow let it do it's work watch the tail end see how much is coming off don't move it back an forth go steady the sander takes maybe an 4 inch or bit more off it won't take the whole 8 inchs , i used to sand a boat like yours 36 ft before lunch then fill it in with micro balloons/epoxy in the afternoon , go over it the next day , paint the next , we spit them out like sunflower seeds because that was when blisters on hulls started showing up , now after all these years you have cored decks an supposedly unsinkable hulls saturated with water an rotting an it's a new ball game because water finds it's way in to any hull so Godspeed an keep up the videos i watch them all 🙂

    I've been lending a hand refitting and repainting club boats. 2 coats of 20% diluted 2 part epoxy primer went on fine as did 2 coats of topcoat EXCEPT for a few small areas on the cockpit seats and seat backs where we only applied 1 topcoat because it would also get a coat of non-skid; the topcoat flaked off after 24 hours.
