Toronto Zoo Grizzly Bear Winter Den

Did you know that Grizzlies do not actually hibernate in the true sense? We refer to this period as their "winter sleep". Their body temperature only drops slightly and they can be easily disturbed from their sleep, so they can actually wake up at any moment!
Before they start to snooze, they can excavate up to one tonne of dirt for their winter den. With the temperature getting cooler, Samson and Shintay are expected to start their winter sleep in the next week.

That den is fake. It was made by humans. The entrance is too square. The inside is too smooth and neat. That man’s drawing attention to the claw marks is just patter to mislead viewers. A zoo bear might very well hibernate in that man made den, but it wasn’t dug by any bear.
