Does this passage indicate they recognised Jesus in his risen body at Emmaus? That is, rather than recognising his Real Presence in the eucharist? So their story may have had greater significance for the Apostles than for themselves.

So even if we lose ourselves Christ always finds a way to find us through the power of the eucharist and through scripture? Don't you think they would pass on this teaching? Sacred Tradition. Paul writes how if you eat the bread or drink the wine unworthily, you are guilty of the body and blood of the Lord, because Paul knows that's it's the body, blood, soul, and Divinity of Christ, under the appearance of bread and wine.
