It's considered a historic site so it's more of a museum. Originally the plantation produced indigo , rice and sugar.

Why did 2000 children die from the Perish,?

Many of the children honored at this memorial died of diseases, but some of them died under tragic circumstances such as being hit by lightning, drowning, or burning. The period for the memorial is 1823-1863 so it reflects children under 3 yrs old that died during that time. Louisiana is divided into parishes as opposed to counties. St Louis the Baptist Parish is one of the many parishes in Louisiana and is home for the Whitney Plantation. Good questions Annie 🤗
