- The Hog Island SW 16 Skiff is an amazing little roto-molded boat that's pretty much bulletproof and unsinkable...From saltwater flats to whitewater rivers and everything in-between, it's hard to find something that it can't do.
Join@fishwithjd as he highlights some of the epic adventures he had in his "Hog."

Great video and solid editing! I just picked up a 14.5' Solo Skiff that's also roto molded over foam and it allows incredible 3 and 4 inch range. 8HP prop, as jet drive would be way too large for this skiff. Lot's of similar flexibilities between our two boats...
@@swamphog77 Thanks! I’ll have to look solo skiff up!
Wow, you've had a lot of good memories with that boat.
So many!!!
I have a 19 ft drift boat and a 20 North River scout and this will be my replacement for boat boats. It looks like it is a perfect happy medium between the two and better than a power drifter
Pretty fun and versatile rig for sure!
Going up and down those rapids with a motor boat like that was the coolest thing I have seen all week. I have a 14 ft lowe and feel like maybe I could try that. I don't have jet power so maybe get a few props. I actually shouted So cool.
Haha…yeah super fun. Be careful with without a pump tho!!
That’s an awesome little boat. I would like to have one like this.
Super fun!
by the end of that video im emotionally attached to the boat and holding back tears as you put her on the trailer for the first time. The hell is wrong with me? lol super sick though! Im looking for one but they arent easy to come by second hand and set up how I want. Not cheap new either.
Nothing is wrong with you! I feel the same way about boats!
That thing works good as a lil sled! I’m using a 1750 smokercraft mv sportsman with a Yamaha 60/40 pump. I love it in small rivers or skinny where most people with a 20ft+ sled ain’t going 🤘🏻
Heck yeah! I had a 2072 Smoker and it would dang near run on a wet lawn!
Can you comfortably sit on the bench and use the factory tiller handle? Without the use of an extension handle.
Yep no prob at all
I'm looking at buying one of these for uprunning rivers in the class 3 range, did you ever smear a rock? how did the boat respond?
I ran a lot of Class III stuff in that thing. I never hit a rock hard but that's the beauty of the roto-molded hull. You can't really break it...plus its so slippery you slide off stuff really easily.
@@fishwithjd How did it handle in class 3 and did you have issues with weight distribution? Did you ever worry about freeboard with 3 people on board? Sorry for all the ?'s, you're the only person I found using this boat in the way I intend to. My biggest concern is for passenger safety since their isn't really any add on's for passengers if sitting on a cooler mid boat.
@@joelophoff6304 Low freeboard so lots of water over the sides but still handled everything I threw at it.. A few class III in this vid:

Considering picking one of these up! Was wondering how it rows? Specifically through some of the heavier water you have in this vid, does it do well rowing through that type of water?
Not a great row boat. I ended up not doing it much after trying it. Okay in a pinch
Do you think the 60/40 would have worked better hauling 2 full grown clients? Thinking of getting one for guiding up in oregon… feel like it’s the go!
More power is always better! You'd just have to check the weight difference between the two motors.
great video. don't know if you are still replying, but I have same set up w a 50/35 tohatsu. Did you have an electric tilt/ trim switch so you could trim up jet while under power "just in case?"
Thanks. No I intentionally went with the non power tilt. That way I could unlock the tilt mechanism. That way, if you hit something, it kicks the motor up and causes less damage.
@@fishwithjd thank you that makes sense.
That was some great driving. I can't help wondering, how many props did you go through?
Hahah thanks. No props! I had a jet pump in there.
OMG!!!!! Bro, I assume that you live somewhere in Washington State? This is beautiful footage.
Thanks! Nope...Nor California
@@fishwithjddo you still have the guy phone number in Washington State that had some of these boats thanks Darrell
@@thepanterdog99 Sorry they sold em all
Hello sir,, I like that boat and I want to get one with that same set-up.. what you think about that 40/30 yamaha?? Its good enough?
yeah super cool rig for sure! The 40/30 is great with 1 but feels a little underpowered with 2-3. But I’m not sure you’d get a 60/40 on there (from a weight standpoint)
Obviously a sweet all around boat. The main question I have is how much will one of these set you back?
I can’t remember the exact amount but like $15-16K
Hello, do you have a link for your row mounts?
Hey - I have one with a 60/40 and love it . What seat do you have up front?
I was from an Alumaweld. I mounted it to a diamond plate box, which was mounted to the round metal pad in the bow.
love this vid! more boat stuff!
So cool!
Thanks! Now that you have a jet, it’s time to get after it!!!
Was that the feather river star bend?
Good job.
how did u feel about the driver positioning on the tiller from a standing position. looks a little awkward with that bench seat there
I always stand when running a tiller...just feel better that way. The bench straddle is a bit awkward but have run so many small Jon boats with the same floor plan it doesn’t bother me. If I were designing the boat, however, I certainly would make that area nice and open.
@@fishwithjd love how you always respond man lol thanks again!
@@mudjerry 👍👍😎
@@fishwithjd maybe ill see ya on the kenai soon ;)
@@fishwithjd dont know why im watching this again lol buuuuut after looking at it, it kinda looks like you have enough room to drive standing just behind the bench seat??
That boat makes me have to untuck my shirt
Hahah
How does it do in bigger deeper lakes with boats running around with no motor restrictions?
I've run it in a lot of lakes. You dont want to be out in rough water in it but works fine on calm days
We have run at the mouth of the river at the Chesapeake Bay in a Small Craft Advisory. Wouldn't want huge sea, but the wind chop of 1-2 ft bangs you around a bit. The rotomolded hull makes landing softer than a welded Aluminum boat. Best with weight up forward. I love JD's bench seat. May have to copy that.
How does it ride in those conditions? Is it a wet ride? Really considering this boat for skiff fishing here in Texas. Don’t expect to be fishing big open/deep water with it but will need to egress through some of it to get where I am going. Unfortunately not a ton of these out there and haven’t seen much covered on this in any reviews.
So how much does that cost brand new and where did you buy it at
I bought it directly from www.hogoslandboatworks.com.
I couldn't get rid of a boat that nice!
Cool boat.
Thanks yeah so fun!
OMG, WHAT A BOAT, HOW CAN I GET ONE, HOW MUCH IS IT? THANKS FOR SHARING IT
Yeah super cool. I paid around $14K for the whole rig. Check em out at www.hogislandboatworks.com
Hi Adolfo, How are you? Marine Products in Salt Lake City, and Indian Creek Sports in Kuna, Idaho carry the SW 16 skiff with the right trailers and motors.
What size was the Yamaha jet please ?
That’s a 40/30 HP
@@fishwithjd Thank You. I would LOVE to find one of these used !!
@@mainewoods1862 Yeah they are pretty cool. Sorry I don’t know of anyone selling one at the moment.
Wonder the of this great skiff
Wish they sold these in Washington State
Well I know some guys in WA that have 3 of em for sale right now. Let me know if you want their contact info.
Hi there- if you could give me the contact that would be great thanks Darrell
@@thepanterdog99 Darrell, reach out to Jordan, who owns Togiak river lodge. His contact is jordan@togiaklodge.com
Wow
Lots of fun!
Slightly used lol!
Rapids, a kid, and no life jacket. Really?
Probably kicking yourself.
Well yes I feel that way every time I sell a boat. I do miss that thing!!!
