It's been decades since I've been "home" to Midland. I am so very happy to have found this video you posted. Thank you. I could cry just thinking about how wonderful it would be to walk those streets again.
Midland's library is one of the earliest Carnegie libraries around. There are brick roads in almost every Beaver County towns -- Beaver, R0chester, Monaca, West Aliquippa, New Brighton. It used to be an inexpensive way to pave streets, with so many brickyards that once existed.
Yes, you are correct about the brick roads and why Beaver County still has many of them. They do not form "potholes" as asphalt roads do; however, brick roads have a motivation to "sink" and form "dips" in the road as is the case for many examples in the town of Beaver. But they last a long time...thanxs for watching and commenting. :)
I enjoyed this video of my hometown. The Morning Rooster was owned by my aunt and uncle...family owned and operated from 2005-2015. Unfortunately they both passed away and the business no longer was in operation until last year, 2023. It has now been recently owned and operating under a new owner and management!! I LOVE my hometown but yes, a lot has changed!!
After i got married,i lived there, right behind the American Legion on 8th street, lived also up behind the swimming pool on the hill. alot of the family worked at Crucible. always when i was kid we,d go on the 4th of July and be there all day and then in the evening see the fireworks. When i was a kid we lived in Brighton TWP, Up Barclay Hill Rd. and i had sheep i raised in 4-H But later sold to Greens Grocery Store located on Midland Ave. it,s a great little town.
Thank you Mark Grago! That was an amazing video of Midland. I grew up and graduated from Lincoln HIgh School and will always hold Midland close to my heart! A lot of the restaurants that you mentioned were closed is because they're closed on Sunday's. They typically get a lot of lunch customers from nearby Shippingport First Energy and Bruce Mansfield. The brick streets are amazing and some of the avenue streets really have the lumps and bumps but they never wear out! Thanks again for this video, I'm sharing so a lot of my classmates that no longer live here can see what our hometown looks like today! Great job!!!
I’ve lived in midland for all 18 years of my life, both my parents worked in the mill till the strike happened and a lot of people lost there jobs. My grandpa also worked in the mill, midland is a quiet lil town, for some reason it gets a super bad rep for being “dangerous” we barley have shootings or anything compared to other places in beaver county. Midland is honestly dieing year by year, people try to put in pizza shops etc etc and most just fail it’s kinda sad . I spent most my time as a kid up on 4th street playing hoops and chilling with friends, most houses are abandoned on 4th and if there is a house up there it’s normally not in good condition. Midland needs more stores and more apartments. Or eventually it will just get worse and worse
If Midland was/is anything it is a Pennsylvania Mill town with a wonderful heritage based on its ethnic groups including Italians, Poles, Serbs, and African Americans. As a Serb, I can tell you there is a very rich Serbian American history in the town. While you point to the Performing Arts Center, the interior of the St. George Serbian Orthodox Church is magnificent. You also shot past the American Serbian Hall where many, many Festivals and events have been held through the years including Kolo Dancing in the center of town. Midland is also known as the town that celebrates two Christmases - Dec 25 and January 7 based on the old Liturgical Julian Calendar. And on January 6th there is a parade through Midland celebrating Christmas Eve that starts at St. George and ends at the American Serbian Hall where behind the hall the traditional burning of the Yule Log is celebrated. While I appreciate the drive through there is so much more for each of the ethnic groups in "Mitland".
Mindland wasn't bad for the few blocks surrounding the Lincoln Center. But, the stink and everything getting covered in black soot from the nearby coal fire plant was awful.

@@MarkGrago Grew up in Freedom. As kids we used to love those dips in the brick. They were a blast to bike over really fast.
