Leave it to You Tubers to be trolls. So not surprised. I'm with you Helen. I've seen him live multiple times and there is something magical about his performance. I believe that when someone has had a major trial and suffered in a profound way, it does something to their musical depth as they mature. It oozes out their pores. They have a deeper feeling and understanding of each note. Augustin has an ability to connect with his audience in such a profound way. There's nothing like watching a room full of blase' bloodbloods brought to the edge of their seats while they nonchalantly wipe away tears. Such was the case in Vail when he performed the Sibelius sonata in D minor. This man can truly make that strad talk.

@@TJ-ov4ld Augustin Hadelich is a virtuoso and one of the greatest in our time, obviously way more experienced than Sumina Studer, who's a great violinist by the way. Her rendition was great but this version here is simply better, as far as I'm concerned.

@@bababa0184 Sumina Studer plays this with great musicality AND the original bowings. Playing it ricochet is one of those things that is probably only impressive to other violinists. I'm sure Hadelich can play it ricochet, but spicatto lets him play with much greater projection and freedom in dynamics which is more suited to a large concert hall.

They could care less if you played it detache, spiccato or slurred if it sounds good. He's exquisitely phrased everything using the bowing he's chosen and also maintained the basic articulation approach which is a compact, off the string type of sound.

Mr. Hadelich's ingenious and innovative phrasing of this famous caprice is breathtaking and wondrous. His spiccato is crisp and biting, yet resonant and ringing. He makes you forget how difficult this piece really is. Instead, he makes beautiful music out of what is essentially an exercise. It is rare to see in one violinist both great artistry and transcendental technique. His creative musicality, the perfection of his playing, his unassuming and unaffected stage presence and poise, and his consummate artistry make him - in my opinion - the top violinist in the world today.

On Augustin's YT channel he explains his method/process on how he chooses how to play a note in particular pieces of music. He takes the piece and decides what story he's going to tell with it. The difference between his performances and some other violinists is that he also incorporates a sense of musicality and story into the piece.
Instead of the piece sounding difficult to play, it sounds pleasing to the ears. He also has a good sense of when to play and not play a note with vibrato. He's a master at dynamics and phrasing and I enjoy his musical choices (though, I know some classical purists don't.)
I also enjoy Hillary Hahn and other virtuosos. It's so great that we live in a time where it is possible to see/hear such talented musicians from the comfort of our homes.
I would love to see Mr. Hadelich's live performance one day.

What I love about this rendition - and there's fair few awesome ones out there - is that this has such depth of tone colour, dynamics and tempo with stunning phrasing. Too often, the "impressive" way of playing this is to try and belt it out in as quick a time as possible. We know Hadelich could play it quickly - and he does certain phrases very fast - but the ability to know when to play slowly or slower is equally and sometimes more valuable.
To borrow and change a much loved current phrase, if you can play if fast, you can play it slow #twoset #lingling #40hours

Yes, he certainly has almost perfect intonation in all that he plays. And, in this particular piece, excellent intonation is essential.

Absolutely mesmerizing performance. I wish that the camera personnel who record events like this were more astutely aware that listening to the audience's reaction is a real part of the total performance enjoyment experience, and should _never ever_ be cut short as it was here!!!
