Bob Dylan - Visions of Johanna (EARLIEST KNOWN LIVE RECORDING) [San Francisco, 1965]

  • This concert is regarded by some as one of Dylan's greatest. It was recorded by Allen Ginsberg on December 11, 1965. I had uploaded this entire concert a while back, but I had to take it down, unfortunately. However, in the net week, I will upload the entire unreleased concert as well as the San Jose concert a day later, including many minutes of backstage conversation between Ginsberg, Dylan and Albert Grossman (Dylan's manager), as well as interviews Ginsberg conducts on the audience (they offer a fascinating insight into how the young people views him at this pivotal moment his career). The entire tape is nearly four hours, I believe. It'll blow your socks off!
This might be the debut performance of "Visions of Johanna." It was so new at the time that Dylan hadn't finalized a name for it yet. In the beginning, you can hear him call it "Freeze Out," and "Alcatraz to the 9th Power Revisited" (Alcatraz is a famous prison on the San Francisco Bay). An unnamed Dylanologist supposedly unearthed these tapes from a collection that Ginsberg had donated to Stanford University before he died. Here is what he said about this track: "First recorded live performance and in the conversation for definitive live version, epic, introduced as "Alcatraz to the 9th Power Revisited", has the nightingale's code line, hard to make out but he appears to tell the audience that "I sang this song last week in concert" - which would likely mean he played Visions at Berkeley."
The audio is incredibly clear for a 1965 tape recorder; Ginsberg spent $500 on this "absolutely beautiful precision machine," about $4,000 in today's money. Nonetheless, I cleaned up the sound a bit with audio software to make it even more listenable.
Enjoy this gem while you can!
    Love & Peace,
    ~SP

Years ago my son was in a rock group. They were looking for a name. I suggested "The Ghost of 'Lectricity." They all looked at me like I was nuts. I still think it would be a great rock group name.

I came to SF in 1969, after Woodstock, just turned 17, bought my first Dylan boot in Berkeley, the next day at Bizzarro Music it was titled the Albert Hall concert, but perhpas it was Manchester in May of 1966. Ginsberg was a regular at the Caffe Trieste, saw him there often, alog with Lauerence Ferlinghetti and Paul Kantner from the Airplane, who became a good friend and neighbor until he died. This is fantastic, not sure I ever heard it but seem to remember 'the nightingale's code', was it used in another song?

What I love is that, unlike many artists and bands whose music will not stand the test of time (no shame in that), I fully hope and expect that 50, 100, even 200 years from now new generations will be discovering and enjoying Dylan’s genius (up there with Mozart, et al., if I may be so bold; I think the same likely will be true of The Beatles).
I started getting into Dylan, and finally really listening to his immense catalogue, later in life than many (late 30s, early 40s). But I then made sure to expose my kids to Dylan, and-like the Beatles and much jazz-they took it and ran with it on their own, and now almost certainly know even more than me. And I’m sure they will pass it on to their children, and so on and so forth. (Thank God we were able to see him in concert for our first, and likely only, time this year, at age 80. Now that’s something that future generations won’t be able to experience.)
So grandparents, play Dylan for your grandkids and talk about his lyrics and songs. Parents, do the same for your kids and nephews/nieces. Older brothers and sisters, pass it on to your siblings and cousins and friends. Keep the love and knowledge going for future generations. And a special thanks for the people keeping this amazing content on UA-cam for everyone to enjoy and share together

No. The electric set of the San Jose concert was. As I understand it, this tape was only shortly before the release of the cutting edge, so there wasn't enough time to put it all on there, I'm assuming. I've learned that Sony isn't great with archiving and labeling either, as the concert that was included in the boxset was labeled as Berkeley when it was actually San Jose. Moreover, they only released the second half of the concert when the entire concert exists. Very confusing, but there you go.

Ever since you first uploaded the full concert, I still think the audience response to the Mona Lisa/Moustache verse is the most endearing audience reaction ever. In most of the 1966 live performances, no one can be heard laughing anymore once it became a popular album track. Same deal in Desolation Row with the hands in pants line. It got a big laugh in every early live version. I just love listening to people’s reactions of hearing these lines for the first time.
