    The know-it-all googled response says liquide 32:44 argon is transported in DOT-113 tank service railcars, placarded.
    Additional info: The element is a colorless, odorless "noble" gas and displaces oxygen.
    Why no dome on that yank car? Dunno, but with a boiling point around -320F, it wont be around long if the top came off.

    Hello Mark, it's Kevin. Argon tanker no top hatch because it is an inert gas (non reactive) like helium and is under pressure inside the car. It likely has an over pressure relief valve located near the top of the car. In regard to the top access cars, if the material is heavier than air the intake for breathing air to a supplied air respirator needs to be above the top of the car for safety.

    New autorack at 5:06 is one of the new Hourglass cars. It is wider on the inside to help drivers who may be a bit to large to get out of the auto in one of the narrow ones.

    Mark, Sir - if you deem this to be of interest to your viewers, would you consider making a few comments (in your next video) on what you do (if anything) to ensure that the power unit engineers KNOW that you are a rail fan and simply making videos, as opposed to someone who may be there to cause problems. I make note that another rail-fan APPARENTLY was told to get off of railway property and stop making videos - really, this was a comment that the rail fan made on their channel. He even included video of 2 white railway trucks with railway employees being there to keep him at bay. I'm not a lawyer or anything, but can a railway ban or prohibit someone from making videos - rail-fam videos and if they can, are they really going to send out railway police to enforce this ban? In any case, I hope that my comment is understood - Yea, yea, I know that some of these rail-fan folks get very, very close to the trains, and assuredly some are on railway property, but the cost of enforcing a BAN, seems rather prohivative? (cost comment) I enjoy your videos Mark - I still believe that a small drone, one that is not licensed, could make your videos 'more fun.' Take care.

      Around here, the crews and management know me, know I am out here, and give me no grief. They know I'm not going to do anything silly, nor will I allow anyone with me to do anything silly. I'm told that some roads are more aggressive about trespassing. Sometimes it's just local management, and sometimes it's just local workers on the ground. As an employee, we are (were, in my case) told NOT to approach trespassers, but to call RMCC if we thought it was warranted. The only time I ever engaged railfans, was to let them know where trains were, or if there were going to be none so they weren't just sitting there for no reason. I have been asked once to leave the property (a derailment where I would have been in the way), but was free to shoot from off property, and once to not shoot a bridge deck replacement, but wasn't asked to leave the property. It just depends. I encountered a BNSF cop in Arizona who had no issue with me being there once we spoke.
      I can't imagine local management dedicating two employees to monitor a trespasser unless there was something they simply didn't want on camera. They would just call the cop to handle it and get on with doing their job. Railroads cannot keep anyone from watching, making videos or taking photos from off the property. There aren't enough railroad police to cover railfans, especially away from yards or stations, and local law enforcement has real crime to worry about.
      As to the drone, I simply don't have the funds for that. People have a misconception of how much money I make from this channel. Maybe I'll do a video about that!
      Thanks for checking out the channel!

    • @MarkClayMcGowan
      @MarkClayMcGowan  7 місяців тому +1

      I'm not sure. It probably depends on what is wrong. Minor issues are probably dealt with by the road using the power. Major stuff is probably taken back to the home shop, but that is speculation...and you know me!

    I go up there a lot , why do you always say don't go on Monday? I've gone on Monday and seen trains

    • @MarkClayMcGowan
      @MarkClayMcGowan  7 місяців тому

      Then you've been fortunate. I worked up there a lot, and Monday's are generally set aside for maintenance and have been for twenty years. It isn't necessary on ALL Mondays, but it is very common. Generally between 8 am and 4 pm. If the work is being done at a siding or on double track, they can still run trains. I say that because I wouldn't want someone to travel a hundred miles only to encounter a rail gang (like the one that is up there right now) on single track.

    Awesomeo Brother Mark.. Are you going to get any videos of the steel gang working soon possibly?
    That's something people always asking me about the process and why they do it. So it's easier show people what goes on via a video VS trying to splain it to people 🤔😊

      I won't have time to catch the steel gang this time as I will be busy for at least the next 10 days. I did, however, get them laying rail and changing a switch panel at Woodford in 2022. Here is the link to the playlist with those (and other) videos about how things work. Doug's last name was McLean. Thanks for checking it out!

      @@glennfoster2423 "vomit bonnet" wasn't coined by me and was an experimental merger livery that wasn't adopted...instead they went with the old "empire builder" passenger livery from Great Northern.

    • @MarkClayMcGowan

      The tank car is for water storage in case it's needed. It has been there for at least ten years. They were kept at Rowen, Bealville and Caliente for years as ell, but this is the only one left. It is on what's left of the original house track, which became the #2, or short, siding. The west 1,000 feet of it was removed in the mid-late 80s.

    Mark, do you know what is the average yearly tonnage (Gross Tons) currently handled on the Tehachapi, as well as the average life of the rail? Many thanks. 2024/03/02. Ontario, Canada.

    • @MarkClayMcGowan
      @MarkClayMcGowan  7 місяців тому

      I have no exact numbers, but figuring an average of 25 trains per 24 hours (probably a bit low), with trains averaging 7,000 tons (probably a bit low), that's 63,875,000 tons per year. Many factors are involved in rail wear, but I was told many years ago, that it needed to be changed every couple of years between Caliente and Tehachapi, due to the extreme curvature. Rail between Tehachapi and Mojave doesn't wear as quickly.

      @@MarkClayMcGowan Thanks Mark. From what I can tell, the line is a mixture of single and double track. Consequently, the total annual traffic level of some 64 millions tons appears to be close to the line saturation level. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong. 2024/03/04.

    • @MarkClayMcGowan
      @MarkClayMcGowan  6 місяців тому

      No, you are correct. It would be difficult to get much more traffic through there. There are still seven short segments of single track that, for various reasons, will likely never be double tracked.

      The new, microprocessor based signal system was cut over between 2012 and 2016, negating the need for poleline. It is now all operated through pulses using the rail. The last of the pole line around here was scrapped in 2020. Here is the link to a video I made about pole lines.
