I’m only 33 but I remember hearing this version in the early 90s when I was heavily watching original old cartoons (the original Tom and jerry, Disney cartoons and others that were made in the 30s) even the ones that would offend so many people nowadays, but that’s another story. But yeah I remember this guy.
Nearly 98 yers after this recording I've heard it for the first time (just looking for an older version of Elvis than the ones I already knwe for decades) and didn't even know, that it existed long before the version of Elvis/The King. Thx, nice.
As usual for the 1920s, an "introductory" verse before the main verse, that was excluded from all later versions. It's always a surprise hearing these "lost" verses of classic songs.
Which is one of the reasons Paul McCartney's Honey Pie (White Album, ua-cam.com/video/1ELUBYZ61o4/v-deo.html) is so enjoyable. It starts with an intro worthy of any 1920s song.
Great find ! I've been enjoying older/original recordings, and heres one to salute ! This CHARLES HART song is full of energy and enthusiasm, something that others just can equate... 😇. PS. Them RRRR's are great ! Thanks 👍
I Have always knew that this song was from the 1920`s! Yet I got argued with to distraction, Until I Bought this Record around 32 Years ago! People can`t believe it`s as old as it is! I just Love it! And to think the first was on a Harmony!
This is so cool - I love the way he rolls his r's! When I was in school, my friends and I (all nerds including me) would make fun of the line in Elvis song, "Someone said the world's a stage." We'd say, "Someone said, 'You ain't nothin' but a hound dog!'"
Harmony was one of these minor labels and apparently was one that didn't have the funds to upgrade to electrical, and continued to record acoustically. Books on the history of sound recording mention about this phenomenon but I've never seen an example of it.
*Lyrics:* Verse 1: Tonight I'm downhearted For though we had parted, I love you and I always will And while I'm so lonely, I'm writing you only To see if you care for me still Chorus: Are you lonesome tonight? Do you miss me tonight? Are you sorry we drifted apart? Does your memory stray To a bright, summer day When I kissed you and called you "sweetheart"? Do the chairs in your parlor seem empty and bare? Do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there? Is your heart filled with pain? Shall I come back again? Tell me, Dear: Are you lonesome tonight? Verse 2: I hold with affection The fond recollection The romance of days now gone by And often I wonder If I made a blunder By letting you bid me good-bye (Repeat chorus)
There are several different versions of this song one is by Elvis Presley really does a beautiful job with it and there's some older records also just ask your phone ask your website for the song and you'll get it
I prefer this to the Elvis version (as a Elvis superfan). Hart's version has more feel and soul, and no talking in the middle. About 35-40% is instrumental, which I enjoy!
Charles Hart had a later operatic career in Germany! A very well trained tenor. This is a very late acoustic disc made on a cheaper Columbia label disc.
YES he did, just YOU weren't there to participate. Would have been about CAPONE'S time when he would decide who got a new pair of "cement boots", the THOMPSON TYPEWRITER was also in use pretty often and DILLINGER would visit your house for a midnight snack 🤕...
singers in older songs tend to sound like this even if their speaking voice could have a different accent. today, you may hear it in operatic voices in English but not modern pop music haha
Almost all Elvis covers were not as good as originals......This one though , Elvis version much better....Mr. Hart has the cornball , over the over top stylings of the era like Jolson and Cantor....The rolling R's.... '' are you sorry we drrrrrrrifted apart ? ''
Not necessary - quite often Elvis sang other artists' songs in his own style, example: Wooden Heart, Its Now Or Never, Blue Hawaii, No More, Love letters, Love Me Tender, My Way, Surrender, etc.

1927 and acoustically recorded!
Acoustically recorded in 1927, which in retrospect is a waste.

Such superior elocution. Thanks, it was a pleasure on many levels.

Love to see the royalty cheques/checks the descendants of Roy Turk and Lou Handman are receiving.

Huge Elvis fan here...this version isn't bad at all...if you're in Paris & walking the streets alone. lol
And the First Recordings are back!!
great song and the original. to bad that on no cd or tape.
I wonder when tonight first started being spelled as 1 word instead of to-night. Sometime after the 1920s apparently.

I wonder if there was a more folksy version with a mandolin and accordion.
The Carter Family version is the most folksy one I have heard
Al Jolson also recorded this song in 1950.
Elvis Presley also has a cover.
