This about when she was a teenager struggling with early schizophrenia. She set her night gown on fire trying to make the noise stop. Michael represents the voices that don't stop. She's such an amazing poet.
@@tomteanders1357 it’s not an interpretation, I read also she was diagnosed once with schizophrenia, she started hearing voices after an accident and I’m not saying she is schizophrenic, this is the interpretation of psychiatrists
@@tomteanders1357 I agree with you. They told her she had schizophrenia, but what also happened was a head injury. Diagnoses of mental illness are often, frequently, given to people who are perceiving the world in a way that makes others uncomfortable.
The way she describes the state she goes into on stage makes me think it's more of a traumatically induced coping mechanism than Schizophrenia. The voices after the head injury could be unrelated. She definitely has a uniquely brilliant perspective.
One of the more haunting and beautiful songs of the 90s. I've still got the CD. 🤘
3 Chords and Michael's voice (which gives me the goosebumps) made this
one of the most beautiful songs ever...
Late to this, I know, but just came back to listen to this song again, and the thing I noticed about the chords is, each line starts on a different chord each time, like a polyrhythm. Really haunting and original
A found, lost, rediscovered gem
Now a staple of my playlist anytime I feel emotional
Is that your real name or just one you use so you can be first in line?
*Best song to have on permanent repeat, when you miss someone with all your heart and you're going mildly insane
This song is new to me tonight but I think you are spot on: it definitely has that vibe. A poignantly beautiful song.
Try "I miss you" by the furniture, a British pop band from the 80ies. The saxophone and the melancholic voice are incredible.
My Mother drowned at Poipu, Hawaii....killed by undertow waves....washed up 45 minutes later- but I was in Samoa 🇼🇸. 27 Yeats old , Mother gone - no hugs ,no goodbyes, no farewell. Returned home to New Zealand 🇳🇿 blank, empty. Cried 3 days non-stop to this song.
What a voice and Michael Stipe stroke of genius
Why am I only hearing this now? This is simplicity at its most elegant.
Worry not that you found it late. Be happy that you found it now, and you can experience the joy of this beautiful song from now on.
It doesn't matter when you hear it. Only how you hear it. A song from 50 years ago can hit you as hard as one from this morning. Time is irrelevant with music. The feeling you get is all that matters.
If I walk down this hallway
Tonight it's too quiet
So I pad through the dark
And call you on the phone
Push your old numbers
And let your house ring
'Til I wake your ghost
Let him walk down your hallway
It's not this quiet
Slide down your receiver
Sprint across the wire
Follow my number
Slide into my hand
It's the blaze across my nightgown
It's the phone's ring
I think last night
You were driving circles around me
I think last night
You were driving circles around me
I think last night
You were driving circles around me
I can't drink this coffee
'Til I put you in my closet
Let him shoot me down
Let him call me off
I take it from his whisper
You're not that tough
It's the blaze across my nightgown
It's the phone's ring
You were in my dream (I think last night)
You were driving circles around me
You were in my dream (I think last night)
You were driving circles around me
You were in my dream (I think last night)
You were driving circles around me
You were in my dream (I think last night)
You were driving circles around me
You were in my dream (I think last night)
You were driving circles around me
That piercing harmony that Michael sings is one of the most haunting musical moments ever.
Beautiful song. My wife and I danced our 'first song' to this at our wedding in 2007.
@@6828Lu well, all marriages either end in death or divorce. you just have to hope it’s death in old age.
If you've ever called or texted someone whom you know is dead, then you understand this song
Your Ghost' would probably be the type of anthem I'd want played at my funeral.. The warmth & ambience of the song connects everything without judgement, time, space, past, future cause it just is & it's euphorically beautiful🏵️🌌
Been listening to this woman's work since 1986. What a shame that she's not a megastar...
Many people have had periods of mental torment and music 🎶 can help best wishes to anyone who is struggling remember things can change for the better and mostly do so just keep believing in yourself ❤️🙏
sounds like the only answer to you could be: "thank you AI-Bot"
why is it though?
If you listen to this on the right stereo system, that huge echoing bass drum way in the distance gives everything this massive plain of space to haunt
Thank you, With Honors, for introducing me to this song.
I'm so disappointed about myself for not knowing this master piece...
What a strange and beautiful song
@Nenethegreat W I get the 'strange'. Borders on eery, that's a lot of the attraction. Breaks a lot of musical conventions despite its simplicity.
it s very "strange"... in a very beautiful way. especially the canon in the chorus at the very end when his voice "breaks"... simply love it!
I'm not putting the song down just because you people don't know what strange means
I really fell in love with this song when I first heard it. Really great song.
She played this live at Colchester Arts Centre last summer and I could not help but sob throughout the whole piece. One of her most beautiful and powerful compositions. I love you, Kristin.
Oh my god this amazing. A boyfriend put this song on a mix tape for me in the early 00s but i wasn't ready for it then. I was struggling with my own mental illness and this song was overwhelming, too raw, too sad, too frightening, too much. Now I'm older and I have tamed some of my demons I can finally listen without fear and appreciate the dark beauty instead of only the horror.
I find myself coming back to this unbelievably beautiful song in a similar way. When I let her get away kind of story. So much regret in the lack of expressing my love but so much learning. This song is a beautiful reminder and hits the soul deep.
Easily one of my favorite songs ever. Kristin is still absolutely amazing.
SAME! I feel like that about a lot of Kristin's stuff.. Especially the Muse's University album. She has always been very open about her demons... and I formed kind of a trauma bond with her music that would throw me into a spiral. Now that im older and in a better spot Im getting reacquainted with a lot of stuff from that time and its been amazing. Thanks random internet stranger for letting me know im not the only one!
I remember this song vividly when released in 1994. A storm hit Brisbane late night and every light was off and this was like a cosseting blanket. Beautiful
I remember hearing Kristin Hersh on Vin Scelsa's "Idiot's Delight" show back when this album came out. She said Michael Stipe has the voice of a cello, and that's stayed with me ever since.
Hersh originally wrote a cello piece for this song and was having trouble making it work, and ended up replacing it with Stipe's vocal echo instead
So beautiful! I bought this album in the nineties? haven't heard from her ever since.
Such a phenomenal duet!
I haven't been heard this song for at least a decade. Hips and Makers is a brilliant record. It's good to know that Kristin is well, and making music 🎶
A life-changing video for me. I was already an REM fan but I was so-so on the Muses. This showed me what I should be doing!
Just wanted to hear this brilliant song after so many years. Have got it on a CD. Have always loved it and always will. Kristin has got such a lovely voice and Michael just adds to the songs brilliance.
N.U.107 the only station in the phillippines who always playing this song miss the 90s era..
Whoever was the director of 4AD music videos at this time... I salute to you. They are my religion.
I'll pass this on to the fabulous Katherine Dieckmann, who directed this. I was honored to do the design. Kristin is a great human being as well as artist.
I've been searching for this song for years! An old independent radio station, WCBR, occasionally played it. I guess you could say I've been haunted by this song since it came out! Thanks for posting it!
Indeed! I think this song was also in the movie With Honors. Very brilliant movie as well.
One of the most beautiful tunes ever written. I saw Kristin live in Norway a few years ago. Priiceless...
Love you Kristin, love you Tanya. I use to love busking the song. 4AD and Ivo rocks! Michael stipe does such lovely backing vocals 🙏💜🐈
Great song! Always thought this was one of Greg Laswell's but heard it on the Tegan and Sara series and, now, I know better. Thanks to all the great artists out there!
This track has always held special meaning for me. Played at a friend's funeral in 2002, it has always struck me as so fundamentally perfect. When I'm dead, I hope someone will play this for me.
'Your Ghost' would probably be the type of anthem I'd want played at my funeral also. The warmth & ambience of the song connects everything without judgement, time, space, past, future cause it just is & it's euphorically beautiful🏵️🌌
She's a pure genius.
Spine-tingling, beautiful, heart breaking...love playing it really loud, sounds like thunder rolling between the speakers.
I fell in love with the Throwing Muses as soon as I heard Counting
Backwards being played on MTV. This was in 1991 The Real Ramona was often being played in my sony cassette man. I think I had the Judy Bats on the other side. Walking around New Orleans as a 19 year old visitor from out of town was a uniquely odd experience. I was able to walk through the french quarter listening to Hook in her head and not too soon.....and walk through the thick humid air while loosing myself in two steps.
Covers of this song, no matter how nice, cannot touch the original. It’s simply perfect. I hope Kristin made a bucket of royalties.
Så sinnsykt vakkert, dette var min musikk i ungdommen. Kristin Hersh med Michael Stipe - magisk!
Norwegian fan
Stunning. Haunting. Beautiful. Lonely.
This song is about loving someone and trying to raise a family I feel- she’s so amazing. Even in person- what a cool woman
First heard this being played on the John Peel radio show,I’ve loved it ever since
I remember not wanting this video to ever stop and wishing it could just keep going and going...
the deep bass at 1:02 and every 3rd bar after perfectly underplays the vocal to add futher unease to a record that is as beautiful as it is haunting.
I remember seeing Courtney Taylor Taylor sing this at a dandy Warhols concert in London years ago. Best part of the show.
1 of the most beautiful records ever made
I'm fortunate to have found this serendipitously......and with Mr. Stipe to boot...lovely tune.
Haunting....o'so haunting....Michael Stipe; what an additive.
Master piece.
It couldn't be better than it is.
Adore forever :))
Pure Bliss
It couldn't be better than it is.
Can’t get enough of this. Always a favourite

One of the great tracks from "the rock and roll years" (1954/2018)
But one of the Sparkling gems that is unknown to the mainstream .
Beautiful song
Kristin is a wonder
I was thinking of Ghost whilst listening to this and find it to be a haunting experience, tuning in,now tuning out. well done.
It's a nice song, and I love depth added by Stipe's vocals. If we only had YT back then.
Still soooo amazing. Michael ❤️
Master piece.
A rare gem… thank you.
How many times can somebody like and re-like and some other time visit again this video and liked it again... is this obsession or ... what? Simply beautiful song 🖤
I love how Michael gets all emotional when he sings his lines. Oh yes, Kristin. You were in my dreams too.
This was an AMAZING SOLO CD -- LOVED IT AND STILL LOVE IT
Reminds me of being a young guy in 1994 going out enjoying myself with mates but having to listen to god awful dance stuff in the bars. When home I'd listen to this kind of thing...oh, and I fancied Kristin Hersh too lol!
Master piece.
Beautiful song
Kristin is a wonder
It couldn't be better than it is.
First time I heard this song, is beautiful and scary at the same time, mezmerising
DAMN !! WHAT A WORK OF ART !! Hollywood should soundtrack it into a film
Lovely song ..nice harmonics with Stipe too ❤🎸🍀
This is Dark Folk! Perfect!!!
.......stunningly beautiful song, love it..
the video really matches with the song! So hauntingly beautiful!
So happy to have found this again.
Today I saw her the last time - but I will never forget her as long as I live.
First time I saw this video was in MTV during the 90's and early 2000 when it was still pure... Now MTV is just full of craps... Miss the 90's
mtv was never close to pure .if no one remembers mtv and top 40 radio told you what to listen to. yes if you were cool you listened to the bands 120 mins pushed and maybe college radio but dont kid yourself most people didnt listen to stuff like this.
I remember seeing this music video on MTV ONCE. It didn’t get much air time. I didn’t get the name back then, but I did seem to remember that it featured Michael Stipe. That fact helped me find the song again sometime at the end of the 90’s or early 2000’s when Internet became mainstream to track it down. Happy about that. It is a gem of a song.
@@aaron1888 Yeah, great times. MTV's 120 Minutes, and its predecessor Alternative Nation. Must-see tv for me back then. Introduced me to some great music. Lots of bands for a niche market, but also several bands that made it big (shortly) thereafter. Therapy?, Green Day, Rage Against the Machine, the Smashing Pumpkins, all bands I first came across there.
It couldn't be better than it is.
The beautyfullst Vido I've Seen!!!
Love the harmonies
I return once more to this and wonder at her 0:03 closing eyes, she is wandering through how she is meant to be. xx
Jesus! I remember the first time I heard this song was in 1994, 25 years ago. I always believe that when we keep track of time, that's what makes us older.
Master piece.
I so love this song etheric and incredible
So beautiful, so moving and atmospheric!
Simple but hugely evocative melody.
TWO wonderful voices.
This is a truly iconic track.
Avevo 20 anni, camminavamo con mia madre verso un santuario sulle alture di Genova e cantavamo questa meravigliosa canzone...
It scratches at you, and you claw back at it.
She was great with Throwing Muses 2019 🌹 Bowl 🏟 !
Micheal Stipe...he's so young here ❤
Pure Bliss
"You were driving circles around me"
Like a white shark
So dangerous
With those hypnotic eyes
Takes me back to an awesome time ...thank you so much for posting this
Like when Tori Amos and Maynard James Keenan did Mohammad My Friend, these two are a perfect blend.
Hauntingly beautiful
Love the Cello on this song.
I heard a beautiful girl singing this song in the street and thats how i learn it.. I fell in love with once with this, thank you "stranger" girl
Stunning, stunning, stunning, still after all those years...
I love this song and get goose bumps when listening to it!
Beautiful and intense.
Saw Kristin live last saturday in Lisbon, a magical moment.
