Synopsis :
The film is an invite to visit the Ardèche, with its emblematic industrial architecture and its skills; a journey toward human adventures and unknown remains, up to today’s renewal.
The film was a commission of the Natural Regional Park of the Monts d’Ardèche, in partnership with the “Industrial heritage” committee of the Ardèche.
Abstract :
In 1h30, the film describes the main industrial activities in the Ardèche :
00.00.00 : Introduction
00.04.47 : Mils
00.05.17 : The textile industry : silkworm farms, spinning factories, reeling factories
00.24.20 : Mining : zinc, lead, silver-bearing lead, coal, iron and production sites : blast furnaces and cement plants
00.40.21 : Paper mills
01.07.41 : Jewelry industry
Transportation : trains (00.25.49 ; 00.36.30) and buses (00.55.20)
00.47.06 : Leather industry : tanneries, taweries
And filigree, mineral waters and breweries
It takes the viewer on a sensitive walk through the area, giving a large place to industrial landscapes (with drones), to iconography (thanks to a subtle use of archive images - in partnership with the Ardèche archives) and to sounds (sound design).
Several experts share their knowledge about these heritages, on emblematic sites illustrating their words. They never face the camera, but speak off-screen to give as much room as possible to the sites themselves.
Beyond the activities concerned, the film treats numerous issues : water, children and women’s work, globalization of the economy as soon as the 19th century, innovation, environment, view of time, archives.
If this film shows the industrial past of the Ardèche, it ends on five cases of reconversion of these industrial buildings, which are today destined to social, rental, cultural and environmental uses. They thus give testimony to their ability to change.

The main sites seen in this film are:
The film director chose not to name the locations as they are shown. It can surprise some viewers, but the aim is to take them on a travel throughout the Ardèche, where each site possesses its own history, but tells also something common to this area as rural as it is industrial. The closing credits meet the need to know exactly the places’ names to go further if necessary.
