The part about Billy being abused was spot on as eleven shed more light on his past in Season 3, sad that he was killed off after redeeming himself his arc looked like it was gonna be good

Billy was great in s2 but they really let him down in s3. Of all the weak writing in s3 that still pisses me off the most. Billy had so much potential. Yeah, he stopped the mindflayer for a hot second, but he also had zero agency the entire season.

As a person who has abusive relationship with my family, anger issues and (previous) toxic coping mechanisms, I just want to give Billy a hug. Like really. I know how it feels to be in his place and I'm familiar with the inner conflict that rots you from the inside. The difference is that I got help and sadly, Billy didn't.

And this is why I like Billy as a character - he's not good, he's incredibly flawed but the fact he didn't/couldn't get help, what I'm sure started small, escalated. There were so many factors combined to make Billy and, had some of those been looked at or prevented could have changed his character dramatically.

I felt bad for Billy, especially in season 3 because he never got to tell Max that her and her mother are living with a monster. He never got to tell anyone what his father did to him and his mother. At the start maybe Billy didn’t really care for Max and Max probably didn’t care for Billy but closer to the end you could tell that he did actually start to care, but he never got to tell his sister and when it came to it the only words that Billy could say before he died were, “I’m..Sorry”. It’s clear to say that if Billy wasn’t killed then the relationship between Max and Billy would’ve grown stronger, a lot stronger.

Billy might be one of the most interesting character in the entire series, with his emotional complex making the character multilayered.
I finished season three one to two hours ago and I’m crying and I love billy in the season because you get to see why he kinda acts the way he is
Me too! I feel so bad for him, it’s clear he loved his mom so much and after she left he was never the same. The scene where he took el and she talked about his memories was so emotional! I love him this season

I actually liked how Billy wasn't a part of the story, it was part of what made him a villian. He's causing problems for everyone and making it harder for them to save the world. Which is what an antagonist does.

He had so much potential and they wasted it. I’ll never forgive the Duffer Brothers for that. We literally have no idea when his mother left, we only know it was when he was a child and it was because his father thought she was cheating. We don’t know why the moved to Indiana, we don’t know if his mother is still alive. We don’t even know why his father was abusive toward him and his mother and we don’t know why Susan turns her head when billy gets smacked rather than standing up for him.
Just such a cool character honestly, I love the whole arc he has. Sucks so many people hate him. Had he not died, he could’ve been a terrific, albeit unwilling, help with the main team. More helping for his own sake while unwittingly also helping everyone else in any given predicament lol. I’d imagine he’d be a brute just smashing into a monster with his car or some shit like that. Idk… I’m glad he had a badass last couple scenes at least

I just feel like this new dude in s4 just lacks a real sense of depth and finesse I suppose. I know it's horrible, and all respect to the actor, but I'm glad he died at the end of s4 volume 2 lol he was getting annoying.

It really upsets me Billy as a whole character was completely wasted. I was very interested to know more about his relationship with his father.. But then I realized Stranger Things isn’t about abusive relationship problems with your parents… So why did they even give this awareness to his character?? They never went back to it and they killed him off…… his emotional backstory should’ve came from Billy himself. NOT THROUGH L’s Eye….
His character had so much magnetism which makes me glad that they at least made him a main character for season 3, but they had such a great thing going with how dynamic his character was and I would’ve loved to see even more development

I don't believe Billy was poorly written. He simply wasn't there any more than he had to be. Just because a character is well written, doesn't mean we have to like them or appreciate them.

@@akiregerome4237 We already knew Steve was a good guy from his actions in late Season 1 and his friendship and mentorship of Dustin in Season 2. Billy wasn't needed for that, but I do think he's an extremely well written and acted character.

@@sunnysodapop Idk maybe they was kinda connected so the clone can know what to do, like driving the camaro for example, plus in the scene where Billy goes in the upside down, his face is full of scratch, and he meet the clone, who's face is perfectly okay, and when he comes back the scratch disapears (sorry for writing issues english isnt my speaking language)
Some things that s2 Billy made me think: He's the other side of the same coin when compared to Jonathan, who confronted his own abusive father in s1, but was able to stand up to him. Billy is the kinda person that might come out of an abusive household where the abuse victim becomes more and more like their abusive parent.
Also, regarding his volatile relationship with Max: It's not uncommon in abusive family dynamics for the older child to be the scapegoat of the family, who gets abused not just for their own mistakes, but also for the rest of the family messing up. Neil specifically reminds Billy to take care of Max, which heavily implies that even when Max is the one misbehaving by staying out too late, it's Billy who will get in trouble and get abused. So he's not just taking out his frustration and lack of control on Max because she's conveniently there, but because she's clearly the favored child and has likely gotten him in trouble before- something that Max and therefore the viewer don't really understand.
(ignoring that this was 2 years ago) I also want to point out the fact that Jonathan and Will live with an amazing mother, Joyce. Billy's biological mother left him with his abusive dad as a child which honestly must be so damaging, and Max's mother just looks away or ignores whenever Neil abuses Billy. So basically he was all alone for years without any proper affection which naturally lead to his toxic coping mechanisms and agressive behaviour.

they turned his character around. i never thought i would actually feel bad for billy.
Gonna admit they did him kind of dirty this season. His redemption came pretty much out of nowhere when they found convenient, it could've been much more developed. Also I feel that the screentime he got didn't really mean much of anything, as being the mind-flayer's host was the only thing he had going on.
Besides, the flashbacks Eleven got were pretty vague and insipid, I've seen fanon works that explained Billy's motives far better.

Whoa whoa whoa stop right there. Billy doesn't have to be an ally in order to be a good character. If he had turned against the demodogs and had a redemption arc, he would be Steve 2.0, and we don't need one. I agree that his character was underused, but we didn't need a big Billy story this season, we just needed an introduction, which we got. I think he'll fall much deeper and truly hit rock bottom before his character changes, if it ever does. And it doesn't need to change for the better in order for him to have a good arc. Billy isn't a person, he's a character, he serves a purpose, and if his purpose is to be a human villain, then let's go for it.

Random4Nothing I agree that Billy's past does not give him a right to have done all the bad that he did. But I do think that seeing into Billy's past in season 3 helped us to understand why he acted the way he did (although it is still not right). In this video he goes on about how Billy's character didn't have a purpose in season 2 and he could have done more (the video was made before season 3) so I wanted to point out that Billy did get a purpose and I dont think he is such a throw away character. Even after all the abuse from her brother Max was still emotional after he died and I think it shows that Billy was good on the inside

he got killed because there were too many characters (probably the same reason why eddie was killed off as well) and they probably wanted a really impactful death for max so they killed him off. even if he was abused and traumatised as a kid, it’s still no excuse. jonathan had the same experience but he wasn’t abusive towards will or tried to kill lucas. lonnie was abusive to both his kids, you can even hear him saying “you’ve gotten stronger.” when jonathan pushes him away like they have physically fought before, when he was younger. yeah, i feel bad to billy bc of his past but none of that excuses his actions - it just explains why he does it. he’s still racist.

I actually liked that he didn't have a change of heart. Enough people are on the side of the main cast, having a person against them seems refreshing to me. I wouldn't have given a shit about Billy if was like the second Steve, simply because we don't need one. I agree that he wasn't implemented that well, but I still liked the character.

He simply needed to be led in the right direction. But Billy... Billy is genuinely broken. Fixing that kind of damage takes a *lot* of time. To people considering him too extreme, I ask to remember IT. The main human antagonist there, Henry Bowes, was much worse than Billy. He was also turned bad because of a seemingly abusive father figure. All things considered, Billy turned out pretty okay considering the situation. He's managed to surpress his violence a lot, and compared to Henry from IT, he's not a complete sociopath yet, he's still got empathy, at least enough to *try* and protect his sister. Whether he meant to or not. He wasn't pushed to stabbing a kid with a knife, or killing his own father yet

In my opinion, I think Billy does genuinely care about Max, it's just hard to see because he's so blinded by rage. Because that's what rage does, it blinds you. Throughout the show I spotted moments where I could see him legit trying to be a good person - giving Steve basketball advice, and consoling him when Steve finds out that Nancy ran off with Jonathan.
But back to Max. When he first sees her arguing with Lucas, yes, he does the whole "Like it or not I'm your brother and I have to protect you." But I honestly don't think it's possessive, because after that, when Max sasses him, he grabs her to get her full attention and says "This is serious shit, I'm older than you." I translated that as 'I've been through more than you, and experienced what happens when you encounter someone abusive.'
Rage blinds people, so it would be easy for Billy to interpret a heated argument as something that could manifest into an abusive relationship. And of course there's the scene where Max is at Will's. When he's talking to Steve, he's being friendly with him, which he really didn't have to do if he didn't want to. If you look, he only get's pissed off with Steve after he's been lied to, and even then it's not totally a control issue, it's a protective issue. He says "my 13 year old sister has been missing all day, and then I find her with you in a stranger's house, and you lie to me about it". If you forget who these characters are for a second and look at it from an outsider's point of view, that obviously does sound very fucking sketchy and suspicious.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that he's a saint in devil's clothing, afterwards he does get unnecessarily violent. But I just don't believe that his relationship with Max is possessive, yes he's abusive, but unintentionally, he has no one else to take it out on, so he takes it out on her. People with mental issues do that, they will take it out on people that they love dearly, whether they mean to or not.
And the final scene that makes me think this, is the night of the snowball. When Max is getting ready, her eye meets Billy's and he looks very submissive and docile. I'm sorry but if he was intentionally being possessive and abusive I don't think he would have settled so easily, abusers don't do that, they don't like resistance that's the whole point. I think if he was intentionally abusive he would have gotten her back for that. I see that scene more as an understanding that she is in fact OK, and she will bite back, so she doesn't need him as much as he thought and she'll tell him off if he tries it again.

Agreed and I personally think we'll see more between Billy and Max. Maybe Billy slowly finding out what actually happens in Hawkins, he'll probably end up dying later on defending Max against governments or demogorgons.
Oh my god! Why does no one seem to understand what condescension is?! He wasn’t “reassuring Steve” in that scene he was rubbing it in that Steve had gone soft and been left hanging by Nancy, which to Billy translates to a weakness to exploit. Billy acts this way toward Steve because he knows that Steve used to be top dog or, “King Steve” as he was called and Billy automatically gets overly confrontational because he can’t fight his dad so he’ll fight all the other threats to his ego and such. He’s also super territorial which is not about caring for someone or something (Max) it’s about power and control. Also, that end scene, Yes, abusers do do that, they back off when confronted head on because they don’t like being stood up too but won’t actually do anything when that familiar sense of over powered kicks in. Max can, in fact, save herself and the person she most needs to do that from is Billy.

You might be right about the Steve thing. However, as someone who has been abused, I disagee with the 'abuser just letting it go because he was told off.' Him just letting it go makes him more of Max's bully rather than her abuser, which was my original point.
This is all open to interpretation though given that this is a fictional story, and I did say to begin with that it was just my opinion :)

Have you read the books though? Malfoy was a rich, entitled git whose parents spoiled him. Yes, he had high expectations placed upon him, but his parents never abused him. They just taught him bad habits of arrogance and power manipulation. He wasn't a broken child from an abusive home.
He didn't have disregard for his own and others' safety. He didn't engage in self-destructive behavior or put other people's actual LIVES in danger (until Voldemort recruited him). He was self-centered and an emotional bully and he hated Harry. He was constantly in competition with Harry and his friends and even wanted him expelled, but Malfoy wasn't borderline homicidal or suicidal. He was actually within the normal healthy bounds of adolescence (until Voldemort got involved).

Yeah, I think you're right. That seems to be the only way they can make "bad" characters "good" by killing them off "Oh, I'm good now because I sacrificed myself for you.". People shouldn't have to die to be redeemed. It's a cop out, predictable, and over used. I'd rather Billy leave to go to another state or country than die. They have to kill someone, though, so they will probably kill Billy... and since a majority of people don't like him, most people will be happy with that decision.

I'm personally hoping they show him making more small steps toward redemption over time and then kill him off before he actually sheds his antagonist roll in Season 3. I feel like that would put a nice twist on the 11th hour redemption trope without sacrificing the complexity of his character. I just like the idea of having a character that would have had the chance to naturally mature but whose life was cut short by the supernatural events of the show. It seems like a very realistic concept for a Sci-Fi story that would really fit with the unique tone of Stranger Things.

lol all this talk about how Billy was irrelevant because he wasn't important to the Mindflayer plot; important things happen in our lives all the time, but the rest of the world doesn't go away because of it. Billy's presence made ST S2 feel more like a real world, because being in a scenario where you have to save the world doesn't mean that responsibilities, relationships and family drama just disappear so you can just concentrate on what's important. Billy's character played a huge role in keeping the series grounded with a more realistic problem as opposed to letting the series turn into a campy supernatural thriller.

@@violetacabral1211 That's not necessarily a good thing though, since he was originally supposed to be a more grounded element of the story, like most of the human characters in the show. He doesn't *need* to have a connection with anything supernatural to become a more interesting character, so it's a shame that the writers seem to want to go that direction (despite the lack of proper causality, like there was with Will and Eleven) rather than develop him in a more unique way.

Billy is an abuse victim turned abuser. There is nothing complicated about this, story-telling wise. That is his character, as an antagonist. That is what an antagonist does, build tension, and try and stop the protagonist's progression. You shouldn't create a character that isn't there. I don't truly believe he will get a bad guy turned good arc like Steve, but maybe a redemption arc with his relationship with Max, or even with himself. I personally wouldn't want him to turn into a good guy, but at least enough to change how someone may think of him. Now I could be completely wrong, but there is no hurt in speculating and theorizing, especially with a show like Stranger Things

Not really, I think it was a death in vain, Eleven could have been saved in other ways that could have let Billy survive too :/ and there wasn't enough about his abusive relationship with his father/justification for why he's so aggressive. I could be less annoyed about his fate in season 3 if there had been actual explanation of his backstory and perhaps more familial clashes, because then at least we can sympathise with him. Heck, I could be less annoyed about his death if it was actually heroic. I don't think there was *enough* you know! I think Billy should have had a change of heart, saving Eleven and maybe helping protect the other kids. I don't mean becoming a Steve Harrington 2.0, but at least letting the audience have opportunities to connect with him more. Idk man, Billy was such a wasted character, I think he was the best in season 2 and it sucks to see how he was so "integral" to season 3 but he was completely ignored all season :/

Watching this from 2019 after watching season 3 and knowing that all the set up of Billy wasn't for season 2, but season 3. The way they isolated him so they could fully use him in the next run is actually really effective(at least to me).
