  • How To Apply/Use Compression! How Much Threshold and Ratio?! In this tutorial, I don't go into details about what the different controls do, but tell you tips and tricks on how you can start to apply them to your tracks. The hardest part of compression is "how much", as it always depends. But in this tutorial, I give you tips on how to use/apply threshold, ratio, attack and release, knee, and makeup gain.

    So I finally got to see one of your videos after saving them for later all the time. Aaaaaand now I subscribe! (doin' it right now....click!, done!)
    Compression is that part of the process where I think we all, at least once or twice....or thrice... end up questioning ourselves, who we are and why we're in this world...it's beautiful if you think about it..hehe.
    First of all, nice video! you did great explaining it (now that I have a better understanding of it, I can say that you explain it very good).
    I have a question that it's not related directly to the process itself but to the fact that I dunno why on earth my compressor does not display the "Gain Reduction" decibels at the bottom like yours does!! What version of Ableton are you using? Cuz I'm using 10.
    Thanks!!

    Vengeance's VPS Scope plugin is ace for measuring compression as it gives you the incoming waveform as well as the spectrum and saves having to freeze and flatten so much.
    I think it was free with a copy of Computer Music or some other music tech magazine, would recommend! Saves a bag of time when fiddling with compressors

    What I am working on right now is meditation tracks to help people relax annd/or sleep. What I have noticed about these kinds of tracks that I have listened to myself that REALLY annoys me is inconsistent volume. When I am trying to sleep, I don't need to get all rested and then have to adjust the volume of something. I need it to stay about the same volume throughout. So maybe this is telling me the attack of the compressor shoult be fast? So that the volume of the whole thing stays pretty consistent.

  • @theJiveMind
    @theJiveMind 8 місяців тому

    Thanks, wonder- and insightful explanation. One thing I didn't understand is why the blue, compressed track was frozen and flattened before listening. Was it just to conserve CPU cycles? Because if I understand correctly there shouldn't be an audible difference before and after freezing and flattening.

    Do you even have to use compression? It seems that everyone just uses it because they think they have to for some reason. Particularly in electronic music a lot of the sounds are already compressed etc. If I like how my music sounds then what is the actual purpose of it?

    • @LNADoesAudioStuff

      Exactly. Do not use it if there is no need to use it. It is just a tool to reduce dynamic range, nothing else ☺️

    That rule of thumb for make up gain makes no sense whatsoever. It should probably be ”use the amount of gain reduction as a guideline” but i would still advice to just use your ears to match the volume.

    • @LNADoesAudioStuff
      @LNADoesAudioStuff  2 роки тому

    • @Karpo1

      @@LNADoesAudioStuff My point was that ratio does not imply how much make up gain you need cause it works in a relation with threshold. If you sharp some peaks with 20:1 ratio, you probably don’t wanna add 20db make up gain.
