  • Kastking Zephyr Reel Review: fishingdiscove...
This video is about the experience of budget Bait Finesse System (BFS) micro spoon fishing for trout. It just goes to show that, although the combined cost of rod and reel was under $100, there's great fun and success possible with BFS.
Just for interest, I bought both the rod ($25 at the time) and reel ($69,99) for my personal gear collection (and since then KastKing has kindly sent me their drag clicker model of Zephyr to try out too, which I was very happy to receive - Thank you KastKing.). Having an audible, clicking drag is really valuable when fishing light lines on ultralight spools - so you know right away when line is peeling out; so that is a great upgrade that I'm looking forward to trying out in the Zephyr in future.
Although owning top end tackle is extremely rewarding, I think this video shows that there is very little price barrier to entry into BFS - which is a good thing for the sport. Affordable bait finesse system fishing will help it to grow and for people to improve their skills with ultralight baitcasters.

At the same time as knocking down barriers, it is good to have had the value of the absolute best gear already established by the earliest adopters seeking out JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) imports for thousand-dollar-plus price tags for rod and reel combos. That way, the research and development at the cutting edge is supported - which then feeds down to the mid-range Bait Finesse gear as well as the entry-level gear too.
Making accurate flicks with a micro spoon (fitted with a barbless single hook) under branches and dropping gently into likely looking spots is a wonderful way to target small stream trout. Fishing catch and release, those barbless singles are essential for trout. The 2.5 g spoon works out at somewhere between 1/11th and 1/12th of an oz (which isn't a particularly round number, but it is closer to 1/16th oz than it is to 1/8th oz). Eithe way, that's something that you'd struggle to cast on normal baitcasting reels - and you used to need to rig on ultralight spinning gear.
Here's a full kit list - though there are now many outfits with broadly equivalent specifications that can give you a very satisfying, authentic BFS experience too:
    Reel: Kastking Zephyr BFS
Rod: Ace Hawk CU Double C562UL (note this comes with just one tip - whereas the slighly longer CU double comes with both light and ultralight tips). I particularly wanted the 5'6" model though...
Line: Berkley Trilene Fluorocarbon in 4lb (straight through from reel to lure - and only 50-m on the special shallow spool to keep the spool weight down and allow the use of light lures)
Lure: 2.5g gold-colour micro spoon (supplied free with an ultralight spool I bought from AMO for my Abu Ambassadeur!)
Finesse baitcasting fans are now well served in the UK by Needhams Specialist Tackle and in the USA by Bait Finesse Empire - both are small independent tackle providers and that is an essential part of any growing school of fishing.
I hope you enjoyed this little slice of a wonderful late-summer small stream trout fishing trip using ultralight lures on an affordable BFS rod and reel.
    Paul

Just got this very reel with the drag clicker and it holds its own vs my curado bfs, great for the price! Might install some ceramic bearings at some point but doesn’t really need it

No shock leader needed? Just the main line straight to the lure? Sorry I’m still new at bfs, need to ask that.. cheers 😊

Correct - this is just the main reel line running directly off the spool and tied straight onto the lure. Because the rod action is so light (and the lure weighs very little) there is no need for a shock leader to prevent the line snapping on the cast. Similarly, fishing in a small trout stream means that I didn't need an abrasion-resistant or extra strong leader to protect the end of my line from teeth or snags. Leaders only tend to be used in BFS when using braided reel lines (here I'm using fluorocarbon on the reel). Paul
