- South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) party is contemplating forming a government of national unity that will bring political parties to work together.
The party says the result of the May 29 national election, which did not produce an outright winner, indicates that South Africans want all political parties to work together for the benefit of the people and country.
Analysts say the lack of cooperation among political parties in municipalities should be blamed for coalition failure.
Let's take you back to 1994 when the interim constitution negotiated by the multi-party negotiations to end apartheid that started in 1990 allowed all parties that gained more than 10% of the vote to participate in a Government of National Unity.
The new government elected in the 1994 general election had members from many political parties in the cabinet.
This government of national unity lasted until the 1999 general election, although it was dominated by the African National Congress and a reported lack of shared decision-making prompted the second-largest party, the National Party, to withdraw from the GNU in 1996.
But would adopting the late President Nelson Mandela's model of a Government of National Unity, like the one adopted in 1994 be the panacea for a stable government? Joining us virtually is Political analyst Levy Ndou.

GNU must happen without nursing the prejudicial feelings of certain individual parties. Work together as one, as long as you deliver services equitably, everyhing else is your personal issues, don't bring them on this national project. Thanks Simphiwe for reminding the viewers and that Ramaphosa was one of the chief negotiators leading to the formation of GNU. He has still a very fundamental role to play even besides him being the President of country. As for Roelf Meyer who partnered with Ramaphosa(though he was from the National Party whilst Ramaphosa was from the ANC ) I would like him to have been accorded an observer status in the negotiations of the GNU.

No need for GNU, the parties must for a logical coalition. ANC of Ramaphosa, can govern with DA, or ANC elect a new President.

GNU may not be what ppl want, but is is the more stable option.
Coalition gov is reaĺly not for immature politicians insisting on serving self interest. It may leave SA a lot weaker than it now is. Moving a country forward from 1 checkmate to the next with parties sabotaging each other or blocking the system, is not what the country needs now - getting budgets or projects approved can become a real nightmare with coalition governance.

As a SA citizen and someone that took time and effort to actually go to vote,I strongly disagree with a a GNU formation. Why why why do we want to go backwards in time and 30 years is a long time. We all know that our country have a history of disagreement. We are NOT a united people and will probably never be. The cultural,political ,social division is just too big,at least for now... I truelly believe that the current government can not and will not bridge those differences,but are using this option as an opt -out from not having a majority vote in the 2024 elections. I find the idea of "inviting" interested parties to discuss and please note!!!agree too a notion of a GNU as an outright insult to all SA citizens and unfortunately leaves the bitter taste of a party that lost the majority of the vote of confidence Distasteful is the word that comes to mind. Citizens gave you their opinion. By voting .Take the beating like a man at least and stop manipulating the political arena. I do not have an answer yet...but I have no doubt that this idea will devide us more. A governance of national unity? That is not even an option. You are destroying a nation! Let alone a country. GNU is an insult to the struggle that claimed the life of our forefathers especially the one he wants with the DA. If the GNU comes to power then we must scrub the history of our struggle and go and spit on the graves of our fathers for Mandela and his friends betrayal.
