I always thought it was a huge hit of luck by Fondriest, but watching it again, I'm not so sure... He was the fastest one (a good sprinter even in a peloton sprint), he looks like making little effort to overcome Bauer at the end. He was right in the wake of the other two, so he could have won anyway in my opinion, but we'll never know.

@tortolabvi - i think Fondriest would have pipped Bauer for second place. Bauer was shot after bridging up to them. He should have sat on Fondriest's wheel for as long as possible but instead he goes along side Criquelion as if to say 'hey i'm here'. that was stupid on Bauer's part. then when the sprint started he was doomed. Fondriest was waiting to pounce. If you see in the last km Fondriest never sits down, he's ready to go. So who knows, he might have beaten Criquelion anyway.
RIP Claude♥️
i read about this sprint over and over again way back in '88, and heard that bauer needed a police escort to get out of belguim safely. to his credit i don't think he intended to make cruiquileon crash. he was simply trying to box him in, which is a classic defensive move when someone is coming on the inside. when done properly they have to back out and go behind, which ofcourse there is no time for and they lose. also bauer was trying to shift at the same time which made him swerve.
Bauer was a very talented racer who often had poor tactics when a big win was in reach. 1984 Olympics comes to mind as well. 1990 Paris Roubaix was an exception. He did everything right (forcing Plankaert to go wide over Vanhoydonk and himself) just beaten by a stronger man that day. Bauer caught Fondriest and Criquelion late and should have sprinted from the back.
it was a stupid move by criquellion to go for the inside, where any sprinter would crowd him towards the barrier,he had the whole other side of the road.imho.
It was accidental. If you look closely in slo-mo, you’ll see that Bauer reaches down to switch his gear. He has to take his left hand 🖐 off the handlebar causing his bike to veer to the right just as Criquelion was passing him in that narrow gap to his right. The crowd barriers had these protruding supports that caught Criq’s bike wheel. It wasn’t a deliberate move to cut Criq off. Bauer’s bike destabilized slightly as he took his hand off the handlebar to switch the gear. Fondriest was a gracious winner, always a pro.
La cosa che sorprende, al di là di tutto, sono gli appoggi delle transenne che sporgono nella strada. Chissà, forse senza quelli Criquillon non sarebbe caduto !?!?
Unfortunate. Regrettable. IMO a lil reflexive (habitual, unthinking behavior) by Bauer but not conclusively malicious. Glad Criq got up on his own power and not serious hurt.
It's just a shame that the crash happened. Only things I'm sure about are that they were all great riders in their own way, and that I wouldn't try to take the inside against a guy who grew up playing hockey.
Bauer was already moving his elbow when he felt Criquielion's arm against his . If you do not box out while sprinting you are going down as well . I think that was an instinctive move not one of malice .
the flemish coverage is a bit better quality and it shows Criquelion protesting after walking across the line. just look up "WK wielrennen Ronse 1988: laatste kilometer, met val Criquelion" here on youtube and you'll find it.
... it wasn't a skid as the Italian commentator said , it was an elbow with Bauer cutting the road on Criquelion in a comeback ! Fondriest easily exploited the impasse and won. Bauer will shortly be disqualified , Criquelion will reach the finish line on foot , he will be eleventh ; justice would have suggested officially placing Criquelion in second place.
To me it looks like Criq had the race if Bauer would have sprinted straight. Podium would've been 1-Claude Criquelion 2-Bauer 3-Fondriest. To give Bauer the benefit of the doubt, I think that he came closer than he wanted to Criq when he reached down to shift, which would not have happened using today's shifting technology. But, it was what it was... bike racing! Thanks for posting.
for 21 years i taught bauer was at fault.but now looking at it i dont think he really was.look at bauers face,to me,i dont think he even new criquelion was moving up at his right rear.thats just what it 'looks' like to me anyhow.
Bauer was clearly at fault, deserved DQ. When he stopped weaving those wide sweeping S-turns, he should have stayed straight and steady once the other two came up to speed. When one is in a group, attempts to ride straight and steady, all the time. Guaranteed Bauer teaches his team that, but I wonder if he shows them this video? (pause to roflmao), It's really something that all these guys should consider during a field-sprint (but Renshaw's 2010 DQ was worse). Thx 4 posting.
I remember watching this on TV when it happened. I always felt that while Bauer was definitely trying to box Criq in against the barricades, hey, that's racing. Criq never should have tried to force his way past in such a tight, confined space and put himself in that position. There was simply little to no space in there - it was an accident waiting to happen, and it did. Personally, I wouldn't have disqualified Bauer, but I can understand why the race officials did. The decision could have gone either way.
Too bad Bauer and Criquileon made contact.... It woulda been the second world championship for the Belgian....Bcus Bauer was fading. R.I.P Criquileon....
Dramatic! This would have been Criquielion´s for sure.Bauer´s sprint was one of a exhausted rider who did´nt hold his line and drove Criq in the barriers.
but he was still at fault though and i do believe he was dq'd. as for who would have won? criquileon looked stronger in the end, but in a sprint anything can happen. it jumpstarted fondriest's career that's for sure.
Avrebbe vinto Fondriest lo stesso, era in retroguardia...ma pronto a colpire, non si è mai seduto in sella negli ultimi chilometri, chi intende di ciclismo lo sa.
Bauer was at fault, changing gear this close to the end of the sprint when you are actually sprinting ,taking his hand off the bar when he is very unstable and then losing control causing Criquileon to crash he should have just accepted responsibility. I don't think Criquileon should have made a court case out of it these things happen in racing. You may want to beat the persons brains out but you just chase them down in a race you know they want to win and make sure they lose it.
Avrebbe vinto Fondriest lo stesso, era in retroguardia...ma pronto a colpire, non si è mai seduto in sella negli ultimi chilometri, chi intende di ciclismo lo sa.
Bauer was declassified rightly, no question about that! He was even looking under his arm where Claudy was coming. The Canadian spoiled the party, but not Fondriest's :). Claudy shouldn't have sued Bauer and lost that also rightly because the verdict could have been a precedent in sport. He was wrongly influenced by political people who afterwards quickly fled. Nevertheless one big tragedy, the moral winner loses two times.
Bauer was changing gears, that’s why his elbow was out. Criq tried to squeeze a barrier line and it cost him. Criq’s reputation was ruined by the lawsuit issue. Not only did Criq lose the lawsuits, he was heavily fined for vexatious behaviour. He lost a fortune and has been bitter for decades over the issue. Poorest loser is sport history.
