Therion are one of the originators of the symphonic metal genre. If you like them you should check out Tristania as well, another one of the original symphonic/gothic/opera metal pioneers.

THERION is simply the best composed symphonic metal in the world. FYI, this band INVENTED the genre with the album "Theli" (the first symphonic metal hit was "To Megatherion"), they were already great when Nightwish and Epica didn't exist (symphonic metal, as we know it, wouldn't exist without Therion), and no, this is not their first wacken (you can see them in Wacken 2001). I have more than 100 Therion songs in my playlist. For me they are still the best, not as easy-listening as Nightwish, nor as heavy as Epica, but the band that best mixes classical music, opera and metal (the only band that could compare is HAGGARD, another band you should listen, because it will absolutely BLOW YOUR MIND and make you feel you are in the middle ages, but beware, react to them to their studio album, their lives ussually have a terrible sound). THERION is really Christopher Johnsson, the biggest mastemind in metal. The soprano is Lori Lewis, the best metal soprano in this planet as you will discover if you continue with the journey (she gets higher than Floor or Simone). Every song different for the others, each album also different, but always masterpieces. They even have a 3 hour metal opera (Beloved Antichrist), with 22 singers (Bass, baritone, tenor, soprano, contralto, mezzo, etc..) Absolutely amazing. Also, they are the only metal band with Epica to be invited to a REAL opera festival (Miscolk, Hungary), where they played with a whole orchestra en choir, the first part of the concert being metal covers of Mozart, Wagner, Saint Saens, etc... Well, I finnish with some suggestions: "To Megathrion", "Via Nocturna", "Blood of Kingu", "Adulruna Rediviva", "Land of Canaan", "Burning the Palace"... This is only just to start... Lepaca kliffoth was the first album to change into symphonic death metal. I love the Egyptian sound in the songs

I know is not for everyone's taste but I am Finally gald someone sharing my feeling while hearing/reacting to Therion, they were the pioneers of symphonic metal and the type of vocals they use in different songs is what makes them different. The most interesting thing is this song was not written for Lori Lewis specifically(the song is from the vovin album of 1998 and she entered in 2007, the Wacken it) but she fits so well in most all of Therion's back catalogue is amazing. Anything from Theli 1997 to Gothic Kaballah 2007 is worth hearing from Therion, the recent years are not so consistent but, at least I hope, they are slowly returning at least to the sonority of 2004 Lemuria/Sirius B
I don't know if it shows Therion is maybe my favorite band.
In a different register If you enjoy the combination of combining music transition and flow with the input of the vocals I would suggest a project called Earthside an instrumental project that invested some really good vocals to help them, mainly "Dream in static" or "Crater".

The entire Vovin album is a masterpiece. Eerie, dreamy and mesmerizing, not a single second in it was wasted.
This band is great but.. open air isn`t place for them. If you want live than go to Live Gothic show. I am with Therion since 1998. Symphonic metal fathers.
I don't agree with you, in Wacken Therion gave us three beautiful lives, live gothic is nice DVD because they have much more songs and they had their own fans.

Hi, ma'am Sabina, I'm glad you found another metal legend, Therion is a swedish metal band founded in 1987 by Christopher Johnson. Her name comes from the greek Therion, which means the beast in the sense of the biblical apocalypse; Johnson took them from the name of the swiss black metal band Celtic Frost To Mega Therion (Great beast; connection does not occur directly in the Bible, but used by Aleister Crowley).
Originally the band played death metal, but later began to mix orchestral elements into their music In the form of chorus and classical music, which gradually led to a change in the band symphonic-metal. In the group they also sang and sing singers with metal and opera history. The group is considered to be the founder of symphonic and gothic metal.
Therion music is inspired by mythologies, occultism, magic and traditions.

Finally Therion! They are awesome but undeservedly forgotten band formed in 1987! Their music is a big and excitement journey with variable singers. My suggestion is my favorite duet from the metal genre is the Perennial Sophia from Gothic (official live) with Mats Leven and Katarina Lilja ( the other girl from this video ).

I did a backstage with them a few years ago, then following the concert from the stage. Great band and very nice people. The current soprano is the Italian Chiara Malvestiti, who is definitely excellent.

Lori Lewis (blond on the far left) is an amazing American Soprano, she definitely should be more well known. All the songs I've seen with her in the band, she just drowns out all the others.

The father symphonic metal, Therion is an extremely difficult band for the stage because they don't use pre-record choirs and little of the symphonic arrangements.
Some songs are great on the albums but live need to be changed. Different from Nightwish that uses pre-records orchestra, choirs and backing vocals.
The band today has other singers and the instrumentalists that appear only the owner of the band, with yellow guitar, is in all formations.
what is called symphonic metal started with the extreme metal band (even inspired by the satanic and pagan metal) Swiss Celtic Frost. In the 1984 album if Morbid Tales where we heard in the songs Return to the Eve a woman in narration and Danse Macabre, this looks like a movie score with violin and something atmospheric (can be confused with gothic). Most people mention the 1985 album To Mega Therion, because there is opera and orchestra here. From here Christopher got the name for his band, THERION, is considered the father of symphonic metal, but it is very different from Nightwish. They mix the 70's prog and classic composer Richard Wagner. I believe that this band is in fact symphonic for the great choirs and great orchestras, using many opera singers. The DNA would therefore be Uriah Heep, Celtic Frost and Therion.
The band started in 1987 and released 17 albuns. It started like death metal and has always used themes geared towards paganism. Most of its lyrics are written by Thomas Karlsson, head and founder of the magical order of Dragon Rouge, pf which Johnsson is a member.
Therion (Christopher) is the father of symphonic metal and the starting point is the song Symphony of the Dead (features more atmospheric keyboard sounds as well as soprano vocals and classically styled clean male vocals by two guest musicians.) from album Beyond Sanctorum (1992 ) and the song Paths.
The Deggial album does not have lead vocals. Only choir, looking like a cantata.
They normally have four vocalists: Lori Lewis (USA) is the blond woman, Katerina Lilja (Sweden) the redhead, Thomas Vikström (Sweden) the tenor and Snowy Shaw (Sweden) at the back. Mats Leven (Sweden) was originally in the band and Snowy is doing his own thing nowadays. Good reaction!

Ahhh this is good…a strong Celtic Gothic influence with a great driving bass riff. More gothic perhaps that Nightwish or Epica with maybe more emphasis on the symphonic. Not a lot of people are reacting to Therion songs wich is a shame. they really have this unique sound that I don't feel and hear with any other band. I would recommend 1 song and one song only as the next thing you should listen to from them, a real beauty and my all time favorite, "Voyage of Gurdjieff" by Therion.
Therion comes from the same town I was born and grew up in, Upplands Väsby. Of course the legendary band Europe is also from there.

Some may hate, but I think when Martina Astner (Hornbacher) sang this, it was by far the best version.
Okay to be honest I like this band. But Epica is one of my two absolute favourite metal bands besides Eluveitie the best folk metal band in the world from Switzerland. I love it heavier so thats why I definitely prefer Epica and for example Septicflesh. Hehe so I suggest more Epica, Eluveitie and Septicflesh.

Therion number 1 and Epica number 2 for me
Fun fact: Theron is originally a black metal band. They also had a record deal, but the band fell apart due to lack of success. Shortly before the end of the contract, only Christofer Johnsson was there. He decided to let it rip and put the last money into an album with many guest musicians. Theli makes Therion the first true symphonic metal band. It sells unexpectedly well and Christofer now has to organize a tour - with no money. Accordingly, the guest musicians now consist of drug addicts and incompetent amateurs. Nevertheless, the tour is a success and the band is able to establish itself. To this day, Therion is avant-garde to be truly successful. It's also still Chrtistofer's solo project.
