- After a two-year hiatus because of the pandemic, hundreds of Tibetan Buddhist nuns from nunneries in India and Nepal gathered in the holy city of Bodh Gaya for the 26th annual inter-nunnery debate. Called the Jang Gonchoe, this month-long event for provides intensive training in Tibetan Buddhist monastic debate. “Jang Gonchoe” means “winter debate sessions in Jangphu monastery.” The event originated in Tibet in the Lhasa area and was traditionally held only for male monastics or monks. In 1995, this opportunity for training in debate was opened up to Tibetan Buddhist nuns. The special event culminated with the formal debate and graduation ceremony for the 10 new Geshemas. The Geshema degree is the highest level of training in the Gelugpa tradition and is roughly equivalent to a PhD in Tibetan Buddhism. This video was made by the Media Nuns at Dolma Ling Nunnery and Institute.
Fascinating video, thanks.

очень очень люблю этих монашечек и желаю им здоровья успехов и добра..........
Hi irina
It looks confrontational and unbecoming of a Buddhist, but the ultimate aim of monastic debate in Tibetan Buddhist schools is for the monks and nuns to sharpen each other mentally and spiritually.
Thank you for explaining to others, Bob. Very helpful.
What fun!
