***** I used a media that was not properly sterilized, grew all sorts of mushrooms in it and it infected the orchids I used it with with a fungal or bacterial infection that I simply cannot get rid of, the leaves have patches on them, even if I re repotted them into something else, I am not sure if they will ever heal.

Hi Brad, great video, this little orchid is my absolute favourite. Very easy grow. The Japanese hold this little orchid in high regard and collect all the various abberant forms, from variegated leaves and colour forms. They have become very popular in the west with collectors. There are even summer shows held in California as well as an active Facebook group dedicated to this little Gem.

hi Brad, ive got two NFS clones of eBay last year.one is called 'Biyeon' and another 'Jucheonwang'.if they are what they say they are they should look awesome (well at least to me).am in UK.one grower told me if one keeps them dry during the winter they can withstand temp drop down to 4C no problem.didnt try it that low but Ive kept winter night temp around 6-8C in my GH and all my orchids(cool and cold growing) overwintered without a problem.I kept my Neofinetias dry, except sunny days(not many in UK during the winter) when I sprayed them lightly.both are doing great, they are also in orchid basket pots but with the twist.their grower turned one pot upside down.wrapped it with a bit of sphagnum moss.placed plant on top of it and wrapped its roots in more moss.and only then he put such pot 'mounted' Neofinetia into another basket pot.very airy and orchids seem to love it this way.their new roots are getting longer by a day.both have one big(main) plant and 2-3 smaller ones from last year.I keep them very bright (only horticultural bubble wrap for shading for now.think its cca 40% shade) and last week Ive dicovered a flower spike on one poking out.and think there might be a flower spike on other one too.cant wait for them to flower.
    happy growing!!!

    Beautiful :) Love Neos!
I have 6 or 7 different varieties, one just recently bloomed, had only 2 flowers on the little spike though, I heard they produce more and more blooms every time.
Even though I have only 2 tiny blooms they do have a pretty strong scent and I LOVE it. It's like a mix of jasmine plus some type of sweet candy, very pleasant and now that I've smelled one I like them even more hahah
I also heard from Newworldorchids that the best way to keep these guys is bare root, like vandas, so that's what I pretty much do with all my Neos, they seem to like it. Apparently they do like the roots to dry out fast and have lots of air circulation like vandas :)

Hi, I just received my first neofinetia and must repot it. Like you I will use a net pot and hang it like yours. What medium do you use ? I will use small and medium pine bark, charcoal and sphagnum. Thanks I enjoy your videos because they are always interesting.

Wow, I have the cross between this and Rhynchostylis coelestis (Neostylis Lou Sneary), and it looks almost exactly the same. It smells like an oncidium twinkle though, I find :) Excellent plant, you've convinced me to get a falcata sometime :)

I wish it was in my house - thinking of the coconut smell makes me think of the beach. Brad, when you mentioned fertilizer you mentioned miracle grow, sea something and fish. Are you talking about Sea kelp (0-0-1)and hydrolyzed fish emulsion (2-4-1)? I love both due to natural growth hormone properties but most definitely love kelp like Neptunes. The improvement in plants and especially taste in things like tomatoes, canterloupes, etc is very good bit all plants improve dramatically from years with and without though I have to give greensand some definite credit once it got started. Brad, why MG tomato (18-18-21) as opposed to their MG Orchid All Around fertilizer (30-10-10) with their BloomBooster (15-30-15) when wanting to bring into bud? Have you tried the MG bloom-booster or orchid specific? What about their orchid slow release spikes? But you sure have beautiful results and you’re the expert. Did you use the MG tomato because of the higher PK but lower N than their specific orchid fertilizer?
Personally, I’m trying (not always succeeding) to stay away from synethic fertilizers i.e. Miracle Grow and other brands though I find a foliar feed the best use of these. 1) they leach out rapidly especially when doing a lot of watering - it is estimated about 10-20% ever does the plant much good as it washes through the pot or down out of reach in soil; it makes the plants quickly dependent - yellow, green yellow month after month, lots of petroleum to manufacture, heavy metals etc . Heavy metal allowances were upped in 2002 supposedly to provide cheaper elements but I don’t think any is good considering the harm to us, children and the plant and animal foods we consume. www.earthisland.org/journal/index.php/eij/article/challenging_the_epa_fertilizer_rule/.

Hi Brad, Dr. Kristen Uthus of New World Orchids suggests: "The most important rule of Neo growing is to allow the plants to dry completely before watering", you suggest maintaining the medium slightly moist and one can’t argue with your success, but I am wondering what is best. Any comment ?

Brad, I was wondering how you fertilize your orchids. Since you have so many how do you get them all fertilized without spending hours doing it? I have around 50 orchids and it always takes me at least 1.5 hrs.
    Great video too!

Fast or slow - I would just like some spikes ! Mine was bought in flower as 'flowering size' which is difficult to tell with the really small orchids like these. But I think I bought a piece taken of a larger plant that just happened to have some flowers on it - typical ebay con! But hopefully, this year will see some flowers. I still remember the fragrance and would like to have that again. And they want to call them Vandas - the Japanese will NOT be happy!

I do the bone dry, 10C day 5 C night regime in my garage for 2 months in winter (actually I only tried this year, but it worked!). Summer is normal 20-30 C and water regularly.
Mine never flowered until early 2014. So early 2015 I put it in the garage, and then in March it came out, and Apr and May the flower developed. It is ready to open any day :D

Is that the hariba variety? I had heard they were easy to grow but don't bloom every year. How often has yours bloomed? AND that is one beautiful plant, I am thinking I need to switch to a net pot. Is your grown only in sphagnum?

    • @BradsGreenhouse
      @BradsGreenhouse 8 років тому +1

+Fr_Francis Hein it is just the regular variety as far as I know, yes is just one plant and it has flowers three times and was 18 months . I believe there's a bit of perlite in the mix as well :)
