I’m only 25 and from Ireland but I grew up watching the welsh sides of the 70s on tape as they’re the reason my dad fell in love with rugby and later the reason I fell in love with it . Rest in peace to jpr the wizard who defined the modern fullback .
I'm English but those Welsh players from that era were truly phenomenal, just real men wanting to play at the top of their game, not money orientated just for the love of rugby and representing their country... gentlemen all.. I salute you and was humbled to have watched you. Fantastic.
Here in ireland we had storybooks in school about mythical irish solders called Na Fianna, those books had animated pics of tall strapping men with long flowing hair and JPR always reminded me of them. He was a class act, one of the greatest of all time, rest in peace,
RIP DOC. YOU WERE ALL THAT IS BRILLIANT AS A DOCTOR AS A SPORTSMAN AS A MAN WE WILL NOT SEE YOUR LIKE AGAIN. RIP DOCTOR JPR WILLIAMS James H Kerby Bargoed Caerphilly Wales 🏴
I'm an Englishman and i fell in love with Rugby whilst watching the Great Welsh team of the 70's but the one JPR move i'll always remember is the 99 call of the 1974 British Lions - South Africa tour, you could see the call had been made when the fists started to fly and JPR standing just inside the Welsh 22 ran to nearly the halfway line and launch a huge punch and the South African player hiting the deck whilst JPR troted back to his original position as if nothing had happend, RIP JPR Williams the World of Rugby will never forget you, BRILIANT, MAGNIFISENT, AWESOME, SPECTACULAR is there realy a single word to describe JPRA WILLIAMS?
This man was such a threat to our team, every time he played us. His skills were unbelievable, he played with passion and he was a true gentleman both on and off the pitch. This was a time when my mighty All Blacks team were never certain of victory against wales and it was players like him and Gareth Edwards that even hardened NZ fans held in awe. Rest in Peace JPR, you were a true example of how the game should be played and a true role model for so many others who followed. Much Aroha (love & Respect) to your Whanau (family & friends) .............. safe journey my friend. Big Jim (New Zealand).
I'm Scots born, but that Welsh team from the early 70's were my rugby heroes! JPR was just the toughest mo-fo to ever pull on a rugby jersey! Phil Bennett could sidestep better than any other human being! Gareth Edwards could outrun Shergar! (that's why nobody ever kidnapped HIM!!)🤣

Sadly today the flair of welsh rugby has gone, as with most other countries, it was always a pleasure to watch Wales rugby in the 70’s, and I’m an Englishman
Geoff Wheel was the heaviest on the Wales team that day and he was under 17st with both props around 15st. Most backs were 13st or under, crazy when you think of people like George North or Jamie Roberts. Rugby changed with professionalism.
people ask why rugby had died in wales . i served with the welsh guards and used to tour south wales with our team . i remember mountain ash had 12 teams , nowadays they would struggle to make 1 . i think the biggest reason was the closure of the mines . people lost their jobs and couldnt give a damn any more . the small towns and villages where the breading ground for the clubs . also the mines gave the men a high degree of fitness . the heart has been ripped out of wales . i am an englishman (saesneg) but always loved the welsh . cymru am byth .
RIP JPR. A slight correction, the six nations didn’t come into being until 2000 when Italy was brought into the tournament, so this was either in the five nations or possibly the home nations tournament. It doesn’t change the fact that this was at the height of the Welsh national teams supremacy in the tournament, and JPR was one of the best fullbacks to ever play the game worldwide, an absolute genius, and that is saying something………I’m English.
@@wobblertv8083 JPR had retired before that season but then came back a year later. Roger Blyth of Swansea was the full back when England won. JPR therefore never played on a losing Welsh side against England, although I think there was one match, maybe two, which were drawn.
He only missed the 74 game & at HQ thanks to a blind Irish Ref! Wales lost. He missed the 80 game. he was on a winning side against England in 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 81
i think he is still the only full back to score 2 tries against england in one game . also he went off at half time put his own stitches in a head wound .
A former young Wimbledon Champion also, Dr.JPR .Williams what a hard man he was, when we talk about hard it gets reinterpreted so much but this man was hard, he got stamped on his face stitched himself up and back on, now that’s hard. R.I.P to the greatest fullback of the 20th century without doubt.
Fantastic atmosphere at Twickenham. That second try was a corker! Small point - 1975-76 was Five Nations, not Home Nations. This particular match was on the 17th of January 1976.
I’ve always admired JPR and how after he scores, he just flips the ball to the ref and jog back to his position. Today’s players want to get that TV time by big celebrations.
Noté to whoever titled the video - it was the Five Nations championship in 1976, and wasn't called the Guinness anything. It didn't have any sponsor until 1997, and the first one was Lloyds Bank
Remember this great Welsh team. Even though I'm English I can put a name to most of the Welsh team , but hardly any of the English. Was not much fun being an English rugby fan in the 60s and 70s.
@John Davies the good old days . pontypool front row . graham bobby and charlie . jpr, jj,phil bennet gareth edwards , barry john , the gods of welsh rugby .
RIP JPR. They don’t make them like you anymore.

Marvellous player. Defensive no 15 without peer. Could attack too. I think any changing room with Jpr in it felt they had a chance.
the old, pre-professional rugby was so much more entertaining to watch. man, i wish were still like this.

JPR: 8/1/24: A Legend now resting in peace, thank you for the childhood memories of a wonderful game. RIP.
So sad that the names mentioned by the great Bill McClaren have now gone. RIP Bill, JPR, Phil Bennett, Mervin Davies & England's great David Duckham.

JPR. Sad to hear of your passing. RIP.
RIP JPR. An inspiration.
‘He used all of his 14 stone’. How things have changed!
Simply the BEST 15!
My childhood hero, and the reason why despite being English, I supported the Welsh side.
Same as Will Carling.
A giant has left us.
Those were the days! Great Welsh side.
The toughest fucker to ever pull on a rugby jersey, bar none!
RIP JPR - the world's finest full back (at the time).
Nice to hear the voice of rugby. Bill McLaren.
Never Bettered!
He was beyond the Realm........no doubt about that fact .
Welsh legend JPR RIP
When I was a kid, I gave up watching rugby because when Wales played, we knew the result before the game had started.
Greatest full back of all time RIP sir
Glory days 🙌
Now he’s an angel in heaven, they asked him, who are you, he replies, “ JPR”, meaning, “ just playing rugby”. 🙏🙏🙏
We clearly need more players with awesome moustaches !!
Welsh hero, Welsh legend, rugby legend RIP JPR

mountain ash 12 teams? I never saw any clubs with more than 2. Unless your counting youth and mini rugby?
My old university, when I was their, went down to a 5th XV. Now they can't fill a single team. It's a sad state of affairs.
Only Dai Morris(70s) & Staff Jones(80s) were test rugby playing miners.
RIP JPR.

Why can’t rugby still be like this. The modern game is not as exciting
RIP JPR Williams
I was at that match, at the "wrong end" for that last try!
How beautiful was Twickenham!
JPR was never on the losing side to England!
They lost in 74 or 75 I think jj Williams had a try disallowed in the last few minutes. But I could be wrong

@@edwilson1075 truly one of the greatest full backs ever .
What an atmosphere 🔊
A hero from my teens
Back in the days when wheeling the scrum to create an advantage was an art...the whole English pack was taken out of the game for the second try.
Not really, the forwards were just walking from the scrum, no urgency to create a defence line; such poor defence...
A former young Wimbledon Champion also, Dr.JPR .Williams what a hard man he was, when we talk about hard it gets reinterpreted so much but this man was hard, he got stamped on his face stitched himself up and back on, now that’s hard. " using ALL of his 14 stone !! " how the game has changed , not many scrum half's under 14 stone these days !
The game is much worse for it, they need bigger pitches now,it's all collision based rugby

Hon. My dad is English. My mam gave me a. Freaking French name... Aaa.
Rugby union is the best game. Ever..
This was live while Ireland v Australia which was on the same day was shown as highlights
Not on BBC Wales. It was live. There are BBC's all over the place in the UK.

Great days. The amateur era when rugby union was a beautiful game to watch. Unfortunately it's now won in gyms as opposed to on the field of play.
Noté to whoever titled the video - it was the Five Nations championship in 1976, and wasn't called the Guinness anything.
It didn't have any sponsor until 1997, and the first one was Lloyds Bank
Bit of that tomorrow boys 🏴🏉
"Using all of his 14 stones". I wonder how many Wales/England players playing today are less than that.
2 great tries - defences have certainly changed these days
England Scrum Half walking across on the 2nd try would definitely upset Shaun Edwards!
I was there great day

Of course. 🏉🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
Ahhh, when a simple scissors move was enough to beat an international defense..
Still does sometimes.
The scrum was well driven out, English back row out of the spot
JPR Williams - best ever fullback after Christian Cullen
But Cullen was a player and JPR is a star!
There were a few around of JPRs calibre then. Though not quite as good. Serge Blanco. Andy Irvine. Joe Karam.
@@steffanhoffmann8937 Nah JPR is on his own true legend, just an opinion!
Cullen never stitched his own head back together, did he?!?! 🤔
Best ever full stop. The man's positioning skills were nothing short of genius.
