As a retired OC of this West Coast system. It really isn’t as hard as one might think. However, super intimidating for a rookie or new player just learning it. It’s like learning a new language
Wonder if Gannon scrambled so much because half of the execution was remembering to call it correctly & just saying F it & hoping things would break down so he could run for 10 yards.
@Natural Creature I think that's that's created this polarization of the Raiders' current QB. Some fans like I critique him & don't believe he will ever lead them to a SB. In the late 90s - early 2000s like you mentioned had the Ravens record setting defense, the Bucs, & to a lesser extent Bill Belicheks Patriots. Gannon was still able to get the Raiders to 3 straight AFC West titles, 3 straight divisional round playoffs, 2 of 3 years in the AFC Championship, 1 SB & an MVP. You also have to remember defenses got away with lot more then than they do now. Receivers were mugged every down. Meanwhile you have a QB that has never played in a playoff game & is putting up average numbers by today's standards though are records due to his tenure. Fans can't criticize him though or this cult following will attack you. I don't care. I still root for the team but this cult makes investing in this team almost impossible.
Mike Riley It’s funny because the critiques are valid but Carr’s fanboys just bring up every excuse in the book to protect him. They think he’s just magically gonna change the way he been playing the last three seasons.
@@autumnwind1216 you forget that back then we had two HOF wrs and a division that was essentially trash compared to now where our division has won 2 Superbowls and have been top seeds the entire time Carr has been here
@@auneakeffect I've never forgotten that we had 2 HOF WRs & a potential HOF LG in Steve Wisniewski as well as a potential HOF RT in Lincoln Kennedy. You forgot to mention during Grudens 1st 2 years & Gannons 1st year, they were in the same division as the 2-time defending Super Champion Denver Broncos. It wasn't until Elway retired prior to Grudens 3rd year that they finally broke thru & won the AFC West. They were ousted by the eventual Super Bowl champion 3 years in a row afterwards so its not like they were chalking up blowouts vs a weak NFL. Enough with the excuses already.
These plays just show once again what West Coast offense is about, not deep passes, short to intermediate passes, eat clock, mismatches all over, use backs. THIS is why Carr gets heat for not going deep like he used to. It’s not that type of offense. J Rice would kill on these short passes, slants and then YAC. This offense will be more productive and I give tons of credit to Carr for grasping this playbook n being so efficient in rather short time.
Seriously, I'm convinced people just don't get what the offense was trying to do last season. For all the bs that went on regarding the roster and injuries it's amazing they were still in the running for a playoff spot that last week. Carr isn't the problem with this team.
I think on the west right tight formation it’s called F left because the Z is assigned the letter F to indicate the motion. If gruden wanted to shift the wing or tight end he would assign a different letter to each player to indicate who shifts. For example if he were to call “scatter to west right tight, G left, y stick U spot” the U man might be assigned the letter G to indicate that he is the man in motion and the U man would run the spot concept
Similarly if you wanted to shift the Y man, gruden would call “scatter to East right tight, H left, U stick, Y spot” H is assigned to the Y receiver which would indicate that the Y is motioning to the left and the U and the Z are running the stick concept, and the Y and X are running the spot concept
I'm a running back in highschool and our offense seems just barely less complicated than this by having signals on the sideline that tells us the formation and all 3 or 2 receivers know their routes just based off of two words, the personel, side of the hash and formation of course. But I'm sure it's much more complicated than this as this is introductory level learning an NFL offense.
Needlessly complicated! I guess if it works...but your QB would have to retain SO much info. Maybe Andrew Luck would do great with Gruden calling plays.
Once each component of the play call is broken down, it makes a ton of sense. Personally I'd have an easier time learning it because each word has a specific meaning that carries over across the entire play book. There's a logic to it. I'd prefer that over some code word that I'd have to associate with a play just by pure memorization.
In my simple high-school system, we did it this way as well. Just, not as much verbage because we didn't have as much complexity or multiplicity. Still, same concept. Formation, strong side, motion, routes for receivers or hole for rb. We didn't have multiple blocking alignments just a simple rule for the oline so that didn't need to be in the play call nor did the qb drops. There were special plays where eg the tackle had to know to cut his guy so the qb could throw the quick slant but for the most part loke Grudens offense every assignment was called out in the play call.
Literally 99.9% of you will not see this but if you are one of the few that does. God bless you, I love you. Jesus loves you. But most importantly have a great day.

That video was not the only time that Simms mess up the play call. He was an awful quarterback. Derek Carr, Rich Cannon (MVP) didn't seem to have problems with Grudens playbook.
hahahahahahahaha....... snake will bite you.... hahahahahahahahaha........ Chucky is the brain of it all. I always believe in the west coast play book. Eat up the clock while beating up the defense with the RB. Love it! "THE" Nation will be excellent if the whole team commits to what being a true RAIDER is "JUST WIN!"
A guy who doesn't even know the playbook? Why so he can make 40 yards rushing a game? What happens when the defense doesn't even care about our offense and just keys on Mariota? Nah stick with Carr he knows the offense and will put up some good numbers this year. You'll see.
This is like taking your fav class with your fav teacher.
Viper-begins with V , which is 5 in Roman numeral. 5 receivers. Viper right- three receivers on the right. Strong right
You're leaving some great comments! I'm learning haha for real
meatymatmart lol I’m just guessing but it might not be the case.
@@adrianlucero5188 Fair enough, just makes way too much sense to be wrong haha
Thanks for clarifying Coach Gruden
That would make total sense, but that seems way too logical for gruden...
You guys have to do more of this! This was so fascinating as someone who doesn’t know X’s and O’s like this.
I love it, continue to make us smarter football fans Simms. Btw I still wish you were still on Simms and Lefkoe, b/r messed up.
Agree. Simms and Lefkoe was special.
Loved the old show but still glad for Simms getting bigger exposure and prolly bigger money
Yeah that show was the fucking shit.
@paris parchment so facts.
Really good video
Raider Nation!
I think Jon will condense things because of the verbage and also our Quarterback seems to flourish in no huddle situations at times
And they say Marcus going to be the starter haha yeah right..
Now I understand why it takes so long to master Gruden's offense. Have to feel for Mariota, especially with no OTAs, and no pre-season ganes.
The QB in me loves this haha and I love hearing people try to digest long play calls
And being a player that played receiver it’s also interesting because we had to know every route and motion
I would love to see more videos like this.
CHUCKY AND DC IS ABOUT TO TAKE OFF THIS SEASON JUST WIN BABY☠️☠️☠️

Ha ha ha ha ha ha yeah right

It’s amazing what goes into the execution of a nfl playbook. Speaks to how much preparation goes into becoming an NFL player.

Simms: Uhh what...
Gruden: Are you dumb?!
"F" left = Flanker (Z) motions across formation left.
Am pretty sure about this.
I thought "flanker" as well
No, it just means the flanker lines up to the left as he usually lines up right in most offenses.
Very interesting.
Ah so he run a zig route as they call it in madden lol 😂

It can’t be Z left because it could be misunderstood as the Z already being lined up on the left?
Called Viper because draw a line in the alignment. It makes a snake.

It’s probably called viper cause it’s a empty set and it looks like a line hence a snake 🤷🏾♂️
