      Well said Donna, they had teams of two walking the pontoons and covering the whole site every couple of hours checking boats and water levels.

    These areas always get hit quite badly, but I have to say this is the worst I've seen it for years. Just hope all the liveaboards are OK, it's v frightening for them living through a flood - have to be fully aware of when the water levels will rise and if that's at 4am then they need to be up and ready to losen the ropes. It should be law that all marinas have floating pontoons in this day and age imo. Hope no livestock were lost either.

      It's also when the water level starts to drop, don't want to be caught on a jetty or wedged on something.

      Our marina has rings fir the ropes that can rise and fall with the water level.

    wow , that's really flowing fast , it's scary , it seems strange , when you wash your hands or in the shower & turn the tap up, even though it can run fast you don't think anything of it , but on the river it seems so powerful & frightening , & i'd hate to fall in with that current, & especially with it being so cold , it would be a real shock ,

      Probably last less than 5 minutes

      @@NarrowboatSuperB wellll , abit longer , i know lol , i fell in at barnes craft yard, norfolk a few years ago , trying to pull another boat in ,& slipped in at the back, & it was alot deeper than i thought ( 6ft ) , & the decking curved under, so it was very hard to get out, the people on that boat had to drag me up , not easy with an arran sweater on lol .

    I grew up around Long Eaton and Sawley in the 60s and 70s and it is reminiscent of the floods then. The only difference is that houses have now been built on the flood plains. Trent Lock, Sawley Marina, River Erewash were always badly hit. The only difference is that I don't remember Sandiacre being as badly flooded (reported in Metro yesterday).

      Building on a known flood plain will always cause problems, grass is replaced by tarmac roads and concrete driveways, the water has less area to drain and just pushes itself further along after flooding houses.

    Words fail, that was frightening! Did people have time to prepare, or was that a surprise storm?

    I'd prefer to be moored in a Marina rather than on a canal or river/navigation at times like this. Although saying that I don't live in a narrowboat or have a boat, narrow or otherwise, so I wouldn't know.

    • @NarrowboatSuperB
      @NarrowboatSuperB  10 місяців тому +1

      Yes, I think a marina offers more protection what with floating pontoons and such.
