      ***** Okay, education-wise, America isn't as bad as you think. America may be "behind" other countries, but who defines the standard for education? China is higher up than we are? Well, more than half of their country is undeveloped rice fields, so how is that education working out, especially since the only reason they're starting to do well, (kind of) is that they've opened up to capitalism a little bit, although now, they're starting to close off, and their economy is suffering.
      American health care is better than most, surprisingly. It seems controlled by large corporations, which get a bad rap, but that creates incentive, which creates innovation, which means better health care. America has more advanced medical technology than Australia, where standardized health care is a widespread thing.
      Also, standardized health care might sound like a wet dream, but who pays for it? The middle class, and in Denmark, where standardized health care is a norm, people pay upwards of a 40% tax rate, and auto tax rate is 180%, which turns a $20,000 car into a $50,000. In Canada, where long waiting times and low quality are part of the norm, gas is average $10. Sometimes, the negatives outweigh the potential positives. Might I add that under Hippocratic law, all doctors are already under oath and sign documents when they graduate to treat anyone, regardless of financial position.
      I will agree that our government is a mess. A barely functioning machination of corrupt political power fed by nestled old money padding their own stomachs on the backs of the taxpayers. A prime example is that of the Clintons. I can go more into depth, however, suffice to say that I don't need to as of now.
      The problem is that of balance. The 50s were probably our brightest period financially, and prices were low, Americans--even poor ones--had lots and lots of buying power and high wages. If only social freedoms and financial success could be such today. It would be a utopia. Our country was built on much that much of Europe still respects, but starting in the administration of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the government started seizing power, unconstitutional power, mind you, and that, combined with the succeeding administrations, coupled with the advent of technology and a generation enslaved to the luxuries of the 21st century, created a bastion of corrupt power that will most likely never be taken back, unless we follow the Declaration when it said:
      "But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government and to establish new guards for their future security."
      But unless we follow that, we won't be able to take our freedom back and establish what we once had. We used to be feared, respected. Now, admittedly to your point, some are beginning to see our vulnerabilities, thanks to the current administration, but we still have much respect, and we are better than many give us credit for.
      I hope you read all this, but if you don't it's ok. I enjoy discussing with you, and hope you have a great day :)

    What's even better is both parties often work together to redraw districts so they can make deals by bartering districts, votes, seats, etc. That's part of the reason there's so little incentive for politicians to change the system since they both benefit from the status quo. I don't even know where to start trying to fix this mess!

      I'm thinking you could fix the system by getting a philantropic ultra rich guy, say Warren Buffett, to simply flood the system with bribe money in order to get something done.
      Let's say he'd offer a all of House and Senat ultra cushiony positions in one of his firms after retirement, if they simply support a bill to reform the election system into a proportional one. Then, add 5M bonuses each on top if they support a bill to disable all future bribes of this kind by reforming at least one of the Houses into a professional parliament with high salaries, high pension, but transparent books, i.e. no lobbyists.
      A few billions should be able to do that - entire elections run on AFAIK a few hundreds of millions - someone like Buffett could buy the whole damn system and still have 80% of his wealth left to give to poor people after his death.

      If you live in a state with voter initiatives, you could put a law on the ballot that makes gerrymandering illegal, although I ran the numbers and it costs an average of 1 million dollars in most states to make that happen. And that's without campaigning for it.

      Might as well be saying a prayer if you don't have a solution.
      America is not a democracy, never was. A Nation's future should never hinge on the proclivities of any single person, voters on both sides are exactly the same whenever someone challenges their beliefs, and both accuse anyone who doesn't agree with their assigned talking points of supporting the other party. Thus the supporters of both parties have hijacked and sold out the rest of humanity for the sake of their own egos and lack of imagination
      And this is how they've controlled us from the dawn of the 20th Century, where they pit us against each other, seed the debate with misinformation, some populism, and some catchy epithets, and continue to go about their plunder unopposed. All representatives will always be subject to influence from moneyed interests, blackmail, or assassination.
      The solution is a *Velvet Revolution* to install a *Scaled Direct Democracy* without representatives or politicians. Citizens initiated referendums with thresholds and a social contract using blockchain technology means communities can vote their own policies without politicians. With a vote for, against, and the option to redraft or veto, with the relative proportional thresholds.
      *Thorium Energy renders their global oil monopoly obsolete.*
      *#VelvetRevolution*
      *#ScaledDirectDemocracy*
      *#ThoriumEnergy*
      Thorium energy can process both nuclear and toxic waste, as well as make salt water desalination and carbon sequestration economically viable. It can also power synthetic fuel manufacture, and electric power for all forms of transport. Thorium reactors cannot be weaponized, are walk away safe, produce grams of waste to the tonne of conventional plants, and are low level radioactive for 300 years vs highly radioactive for 25,000. A person's lifetime of energy from thorium would cost less than $100. It also produces the world's best known cancer treatment when 1/2 adult in the western world will contract it.
      "The thorium molten salt power plant can produce clean energy cheaper than coal, which could be a reliable energy system toward a low carbon economy" PAL said.
      www.reuters.com/article/us-indonesia-nuclearpower-idUSKCN1UD0D0
      If the profits from American labour were shared equally as they are with corporate shareholders, every household would receive $700k annually. If we got even a fraction of that we would have more than enough to fund education, healthcare and infrastructure for everybody.
      52% of all greenhouse gases come from methane produced by Beef farming, which is currently 90% subsidized. Ending Beef Communism and embracing Hemp and Kelp farming as Moonshot technologies for use in packaging, construction, manufacturing, medicines, insulation, and clothing could alleviate the worst of climate change, sequester carbon, revitalize crop land and restore depleted habitats.
      It would also be conducive to have an independent public authority drawing from volunteers to act as third party advocates for the public interest, with the authority to charge and prosecute bad actors and cops in our own courts. This would ensure both Government and Law Enforcement are held to the highest standards of etiquette, ethical conduct, and equality of outcome regardless of Creed Color, or Economic bracket.
      Finally a National Digital Forum that allows for open sourced debate is essential for fascilatating Direct Democracy, and addressing the issues America does not want to face, from systemic racism, to ethnic cleansing as foriegn policy. If these things can't be discussed with frank honesty, civil moderation, without religious protections, and without the generic knee jerk reactionary bs, there is literally no hope for the West, as we will die by our own prejudices and cowardice. And of course Reparations, and indigenous sovereignty, if we claim to stand for anything right and true, reparations have to be a part of that picture, and no one is better suited to protect our natural environment, than the people who were already here when we arrived.
      qz.com/1032154/america-is-not-a-true-democracy-but-it-could-be-with-the-help-of-technology/

      @@uncannyvalley2350 The heck? A national popular vote really does make sense, not whatever weird thing that is. A NPV would bring about a Representative Democracy, rather than that. If 51%% of people vote Democrat, 48% vote Republican, 0.75% vote Libertarian, and 0.25% vote Green Party, then put 204 Democrats in, 192 Republicans in, 3 Libertarians in, and 1 Greenie in. I took a course on elections and the history of American politics. Part of what we covered was gerrymandering and it involved a project to create the most gerrymandered districts in a state to push certain issues. I worked for a solid 2 hours and made the most convoluted districts in a state that was about 30/70 for the two major parties, and could not make them as bad as they actually are in my state.

      Gerrymandering means systematically drawing the boundaries of electoral districts, with knowledge of the population distribution and statistical voter behavior, so that your party will win a disproportionate representation advantage.
      The name Gerrymandering comes from the drawing of state senate election districts during the term of Massachusetts Governor Governor Elbridge Gerry, and from the shape of one of the districts looking like a salamander.

  • @olivierg.9479
    @olivierg.9479 8 років тому +16

    In France we don't redraw the district laws in every election. And even then is doesn't matter for many elections. For example, for the presidential elections it's a direct election. If 50.01% of the population votes for the Red Party, the Red Party wins.
    For the legislative, european and district (sort of representatives for a few cities that also elect the Senate), it's based on population. For example, we have one european representative for 760.000 inhabitants.
    The districts for the european elections have never been redrawn.
    For the legislative elections, we draw the lines in 2010 and 1986 (before that, there was a lot of changes in the number of representatives). And here again, it's based on population. Just look at our district maps. They are not as messy as yours.
    For the district elections, it was only simplified also in 2010 to represent better the population, just like for the legislative elections, because the system changed in 2011. Before that, the cantons (districts) were the exact same size since 1800.
    Please check your facts Adam and all the guys that supposedly do your research work.

    My mom works at an elementary school and she told me that during the 2008 election her school got in new encyclopedias. She was wondering why they got them so early because they wouldn't have the 44th president printed in them yet. She opened the book up, though, and right above the caption for 44th president was a picture of Barack Obama. From that moment on I have never trusted any political elections (though I had little confidence in the system already).

Furthermore you shouldn't take everything shown in these programs at face value. While he does produce many sources for this reasoning, his interpretations of the data could be used to push his opinion by slightly bending what the data is actually representing. Doing the research for yourself is really the only way to get the full picture as if you listen to someone's summary of a large sum of data, their interpretations will misrepresent what the data actually means.

      It's more likely that someone in the company anticipated Obama would win the election. Some people just buy into a candidate so much they cannot imagine they will loose.
      Also, academic stuff does tend to lean towards the left, so it isn't entirely surprising this happened. It wouldn't be the first time people were so arrogant they acted like their prefered candidate had already won the election.

    Actually, redistricting in France is done based to keep up with the population change in density / location.
    The lower the population density is, the larger the district, so they all represent around the same % of the population
    (instead of 1 representative representing 50.000 people and one representing 700.000 people having 1 vote each, which is unfair for the population of the 2nd representative).

    • @klyffjohnson
      @klyffjohnson 9 років тому +6

      +Le7emeChat That's supposed to be the point in the US as well. Districts are redrawn to reflect changes in populations in order to insure each district has the same number of people. The problem is the way the rules are stated. As long as each district is a large continuous area with equal population you can shape them however you want.

    • @Le7emeChat
      @Le7emeChat 9 років тому +4

      I'm saying the corruption persists when you change the system. Rather than being critical of France, I'm more critical of the US.

  • @dimavasilev5342
    @dimavasilev5342 8 років тому +12

    For the record, the UK has a very similar system, except that rather than local counties deciding their borders, the government in power does - which makes sense since the UK is about the size of a US state. Both Labour and the Tories have in the past increased or decreased the number of MPs and seats in Parliament in order to sway votes in their favour. This means areas such as Tory countrysides that are unlikely to swing one way or another would be split up into new counties under the Tories to give them more seats (and therefore more representation), or consolidated under Labour to reduce their power.
    For instance, the Tories have been looking to reduce the number of MPs from 650 to 600 since 2010 under the guise of "streamlining" and "cutting costs," but were stopped from doing this by the Lib Dems as this would be redrawn to split Tory safe seats and join Labour safe seats. Labour are no better, as they were the ones that originally expanded to 650.

      Here's a challenge for you. Why is the example of divisions at 0:55 not entirely a "fair" way of dividing the districts?

    • @omacmill5189
      @omacmill5189 9 років тому

      +carultch your challenge wasn't for me but I'm gonna make a go at it. Is it because the purple party has almost twice the amount of members, but the yellow party controls nearly half the districts

    • @carultch
      @carultch 9 років тому

      Owen MacMillan Thank you for attempting my challenge.
      The divisions at 0:55 might appear "fair" at first glance, because the proportions of the representatives matches the proportions of the voters.
      However, if you have a situation like this, it doesn't necessarily make fair results. It sets up safe elections for the representatives, where they run with no challengers. And you see the same representatives term after term. It is better from the point of view of the people, if representatives have to earn their wins in a competitive election.

    • @carultch
      @carultch 9 років тому +1

      Owen MacMillan
      Given 30 purple voters and 20 yellow voters, we'd like to divide in 5 groups of 10 with 3 winning purple, and 2 winning yellow. We'd also like to get the ratio of yellow-to-purple in each group as close to 50% as possible, to make a competitive election.
      The closest way I can think of to do this:
      Group 1: 6 yellow, 4 purple
      Group 2: 6 yellow, 4 purple
      Group 3: 4 yellow, 6 purple
      Group 4: 2 yellow, 8 purple
      Group 5: 2 yellow, 8 purple
      Or you could try:
      Group 1: 6 yellow, 4 purple
      Group 2: 6 yellow, 4 purple
      Group 3: 4 yellow, 6 purple
      Group 4: 4 yellow, 6 purple
      Group 5: 10 purple
      The first example gets you 3 competitive districts, and 2 districts with large margins for purple. The second example gets you 4 competitive districts, and one district with a landslide victory for purple.
      Unless your voters as a whole are near balanced, it is difficult to set up a situation where the district wins match the proportions of the voters, and are set up a competitive manner where representatives have to earn their vote.

      Thank you for the language lesson. Can you explain to me, the difference between du and de in French? Is it like a masculine/feminine version of the same preposition?

    • @Damocles16
      @Damocles16 9 років тому +1

      That's a hard one.
      First, De and Du can mean "some". In this case, you will indeed say "du" if it's masculine (some wine = du vin), or "de la" with feminine (some pie = de la tarte"), or "des" with plural.
      In french, you always need a preposition!
      2nd: "de" also mean "of" : (a glass of wine = un verre de vin) ; "De" is also used when you mention a quantity, even with masculine : (much wine = beaucoup de vin ; a lot of bread = beaucoup de pain).
      Don't forget the contraction if the next word starts with a vowel. (a glass of water = un verre d'eau)
      3rd: "de"/"du" are also "from", depending on the gender : (je viens de Paris (Fem) / Je viens du Colorado (mas).
      Didn't know I could explain that one!

    When you mean "yes" after someone says "no", it's not "oui, oui", it's "si, si".

    Did you do your resear'ch correctly on France? Because we actually elect our president using direct universal suffrage, we do not have super electors. Our "districts" actually never change shapes, some merge together but that is it, and their use is kinda like the American States, only with less power (they can't make their own laws, only policies), and are also divided into smaller districts that have less power each. But we hold separate elections for each of them ("départementales, régionales, présidentielles) in which the people, and by that i mean the WHOLE population, votes directly for the candidates.
    Please check your sources before making such comparison, as it is not on point.
    A French.

      If the majority of the American public knew about this and wanted it to change, then the government would be forced to change. There is a possibility that military could be used, but that is another story. Unfortunately, this requires people to be educated heavily on politics, and the education system in America is very biased. It's controlled to make sure people never find out, or to make people not really care even if they do learn about it. Even if every American knew about Gerrymandering, among the other atrocities the government commits, they wouldn't even really care. The government wanted this to happen so they can exploit and do whatever they want.

      The winner hasn't already been picked, but one candidate definitely has an advantage. Gerrymandering slows the political pendulum. Gerrymandering allowed Democrats to keep the Texas legislative majority until the 2002 elections, despite the fact that no Democrat had won a statewide election in a decade. There was a big ruckus when the districts were redrawn in 2003 because the Democrats had drawn them in 2001. Democrats have fits every time Republicans draw districts.

Also lets hope the Republican Party changes things around the nation. Actually, districts (called circonscriptions) are used for regional elections and legislative elections, which means that both chambers of the parliament (the Assemblée Nationale elected during the legislative elections and the Senate elected by the regional representatives), even if most french people don't bother, that's pretty important stuff. And just because the president can use the 49.3 to pass a law whenever he wants doesn't mean it's normal...
      Districts don't seem as crazy as the one showed in the video though, they mosly are one block and quite simple shapes outside big cities...
