    Theres a brand called TiTi. It's a Korean brand and they sell these oil pastels. I recently ordered them and they are REALLY good! They are actually meant for kids but they are actually high quality! They're really soft and smooth and smudge easily. They have a wide range of colours (i got the 48 set but there is a 55 set too). They're so soft that you can write on your hands with them! I really suggest it to you since you like smooth mediums, it looks like it would feel rough but its actually quite smooth.

    I am in love with Derwent Inktense pencils. They work like deeply pigmented colored pencils, but when you brush over them with water, the color turns into ink that dries permanent. It's like working with watercolor pencils, but since it's waterproof after drying, you can add other wet media to it. You can do tons of things with them.

    you should definitely get more gelly rolls (like the metallic line, stardust, etc)! they are SO fun to work with. the souffle and glaze also dry raised and can go on different surfaces other than paper.

    I work with copic markers and love them! Some tips are to:
    When writing in a journal, make sure to put a piece of paper under the page on which you are drawing.
    Make sure to invest in alcohol marker paper so the markers don't bleed. Got mine on amazon

    My advice about Copics is to just stay away from them. They have like a million colors, and they're expensive, and if you're like me you're gonna want ALL OF THEM, and sometimes you'll have to make hard decisions like "do I want to eat today or do I want to get another marker?"

    I'm a sucker for markers with brush tips. It's just so much fun to color in larger spaces with those. I especially like the Copic Sketch and Tombow Dual Brush markers. You don't even need to buy every single shade of color, since you can blend colors or give them slightly different tints with regular colored pencils or soft pastels.

    Copics are expensive but there are many ways to go around it. In the USA they sell 6 packs of certain color schemes and if you buy them from a craft store with a 40% coupon, each marker comes out to $3-$4. I budget myself at a marker every week or other week if I need specific colors from the craftstore (at the price i mentioned above thanks to coupons.) Because they are alcohol based, they do bleed so you need to be paper savvy for certain projects. The fact that they have tapered brush tip makes the ink flow very uniquely. The closest thing I can compare it to is the toggling of the opacity meter on a photo editing/ drawing software. I was someone who thought Copic markers were for art snobs. I bought a pack on a whim and fell in love. I love watercolors and used to use Tombow artist brush markers back in highschool. They are water based so the ink always smeared and the brush tip frayed because of the traction on the fibers. Copics were an upgrade that fixed those problems for me. Also! Because Copics are alcohol based, you can layer colors (Ex. you can put a light blue over black and a light fog of blue will appear in that area.) The fact that these markers are refillable is also more bang for your buck. People complain that they're too expansive because of the amount of colors there are, but like a good artist, you know you don't need all the colors. You can settle with 25 cool tones and 25 warm tones and be set. Or even 15 and 15 if you don't plan on going crazy with them. Hope this rant was useful!

  • @julia22202
    @julia22202 8 років тому +1

    I would say Copic Ciao markers are probably the best to start with since they are cheaper. They are the same as the Copic Sketch markers except for the shape and amount of ink it can hold. Copic markers are amazing for blending since they have brush nibs! The only problem is they bleed a bit unless you use marker paper or the Copic paper which is specially made to reduce or completely get rid of bleeding.

  • @eallixy-6396

    I use copics for uni (the real expensive ones), but if you are a beginner or want to use a lot of different colors, start with the cheap copics (sketch or ciao) or use promarkers. They are a lot cheaper so you can start out with a lot more markers for the same amount of money. Someone from uni said that you can use the cheap China-brands as well, as long as you check that they are alcohol based and not water based. As long as you use alcohol based markers and good paper (blending card or marker paper) you can blend colors and all that, but that doesn't work wel on regular paper. Oh and keep in mind that they will bleed trough your paper if you are using light weight paper, I recommend using heavier paper or special marker proof paper.

    • @SeaLemonDIY
      @SeaLemonDIY  8 років тому

      +Eallixy - Thanks for the advice! I didn't know you should use different paper for blending.

    I like to mix sharpie for bold areas with color pencils. It really works well. I also use a 0.7 Pilot Uni-ball. Great ink flow, and it dries water proof so I don't have to worry about bleeding with color/watery mediums. I use Acrylics paints a lot, but my first painting was Tempura. I have oil, but have not tried them yet.

    Comics are definitely more for illustration than crafting, but they are a really cool marker to use if you're looking for a smooth medium! There's not streaking like water-based markers, because they're alcohol-based. If you're just starting out, just try to get two or three shades of one color and try blending :) that's always fun

    i love watercolours and inks. i am a designer and i love to to be really expressive. i have tried copics many times... you will either love it or hate them. i really like them because they blend in the best way and look so real with out any mess. the refillable. They are expensive but i suggest if you do buy they buy either 2 contrasting colours or a a pack of 4 mid or bright tones. they work great if you want to use microns along with. you also by as alternatives brush markers (japanese). some may not blend as well enough but they have really beutifull colour and are great for small areas to colour.

    My advice for copics would probably be to buy a set. This is mostly depending on what you'll use them for, but imo having one or two copics isn't much fun when you're trying to colour an entire drawing. Copics are also kind of translucent (as in they're not like bic markers or anything and they blend with one another so you can layer them if that makes any sense) so they show up best on white paper. Also I'd suggest getting copic ciaos rather than sketch for beginners because they cost less and are basically the same except for the shape / size. I personally am not that experienced with copics so my last advice would be to research lots from other people and see if you like them! :)

    Hi Jennifer! I have a suggestion for you, check out Daniel Smith's water soluble oils. They are different from the W&N water mixables you're using in that you can use water to clean them up but not to mix. Daniel Smith also has water soluble oil mediums that can affect the texture. On the whole, though, they're buttery and rich like oils, but clean up easy. Lemme know what you think!

    Hi Jennifer, I would recommend starting with cheaper alcohol markers. Windsor-Newton make some. All alcohol markers should work well together, so adding Copics later shouldn't be a problem. I also recommend getting a couple clear blenders. One for light and one for dark. My favorite white pens are the Uniball signo and Uniball angelic white. The angelic white has a really fine tip.

      I almost forgot. :) Jacquard make fabric paints that are so smooth, with this amazing metallic sheen. I use them just like regular ole acrylic paints. I also wonder what would happen if you added mica pigment powders to metallic acrylic paint. Would just get me pearlescent or more metal like. I'm off to experiment :)

    I personally really like copics, I started with a 24 pack, and they lasted me for a while until I wanted more. Copic ciaos have less colors and ink in 1 marker, but they are cheaper than copic sketches. Copic sketches have more colors and ink, but are more expensive. Prismacolor premier markers are also nice to start with.

  • @Anivampire97
    @Anivampire97 8 років тому

    If Copics are too expensive you can search for Promarkers, Prismacolor, or other markers, but if you still think they are expensive, try the Touch Twin Markers, those are the ones I'm usings right now and they work pretty well for me (I have used them for some school projects in high school)and they are a lot cheaper than the other ones, the only downside I find is that the smell can get a bit strong, but that happens with the first uses, I could even send a photo of one of the drawings I made with them if you want. :3

    Copic markers are great, but pricy, a nice substitute is the Spectrum Noir markers, I use them and also Twin Markers, there is e special storing system with a bag which I have, but since I have so many of them, I bought a plastic desk paper organizer (I'm not sure that is the right name) and in the local sort of Home Depot asked if they can saw it for me to the right size.... the guy there looked at me as if I've grown two heads, but he did it and it works, I would post a picture but there is no option for it. Thank you for all the great information, and greetings from Holland! :-)

    Many craft stores have sets of gouache paints pretty cheaply. I think they are more of a "student" grade paints, like the Reeves brand, but they still seem to work pretty well, if someone wanted to give them a try. I tend to see them for like a set of 12 for $10, 18 for $15, etc and you might be able to get them cheaper with a coupon from some places. In my experience (tho not in school), I didn't really go through them very fast. Or if there is a special color you want, like, there's a better red in the windsor newton that is pricier (alizarin crimson, I think it is), but again, it just doesn't get used up that fast I don't think, so maybe save up and splurge on that one color, or on some metallics in addition to the cheaper set. I like the micron pigma pens a lot. I like highlighters too! :) I kinda want to try out the new sharpie brush pens, but haven't yet. Oh, back on the paints thing, my very most favorite kind of brush to use is a "spotter" in the smaller sizes. I like the loew cornell american painter ones, but I think most any if it is a "spotter" style, will probably be good. Try holding the brush though to see how it feels in your hand; some are made with fat handles which I personally am not fond of, but maybe someone else might like, while others are more slender. Just gotta try 'em and see what you like. Oh, and if you are going to try gouache, just my opinion, but I would avoid the ones that are like the dry pancakes like the kiddie watercolors, don't get those, get the tubes of paint, they work SO so much better.

    As someone with almost zero artistic talent, lol, I find myself feeling very intimidated and concerned about making a mess of my page. It's helped me practice by buying erasable gel pens. The colors are fantastic and...OMG...they erase! YIPEEEE! LOL. If I screw up I can make that part disappear without having to start all over. It's especially nice to use in my journals because I am really enjoying using various styles of lettering and decoration on my pages making my journals something really personalized and pretty instead of a simple "wall of text" to hand down through the generations as part of our history.

    I think fabric paint is usually harder to wash from your brush or your skin because it is meant to be, right? Like you should want the paints to stick to your clothes and not smudge all your designs while you wash it. And it has that shine because it has some similar materials (i think) to paints that are used in screen printing

    If you try copics you should get a 72 pack of sketch. If those are too expensive you should try ciao because they are cheaper. The only difference is that sketch store more ink and have an oval barrel. Hope this helped!

    For copics it's better to start with ciao markers because they're a little bit cheaper than the sketch markers. And for ciao don't get set A first, it's better to get Set B, at least that's what a lot of artists recommend.

    Hey Lemon! Thanks for uploading again, my amazon wishlist is off the charts thanks to all your suggestions (not that that's a bad thing *wink wink*)! I'm actually a big fan of your bookbinding videos and was wondering if you had any suggestions for binding with a curved spine? What kind of stitch would you recomend?

    True I go to School of design and arts and all we use are gouache paints which is great. But I wish we would use oil paints
