It's Based on the Marathi fictional novel Rau by Nagnath S. Inamdar, Bajirao Mastani narrates the story of the Maratha Peshwa Bajirao I (1700-1740 AD) and his second wife.

I watched this movie a few years ago and was told by my Maharastrian friends that the cultural and historical aspects of the movie was more or less accurate. Bajirao was a powerful ruler in 18th century Central India and Mastani was a Rajput Princess from North Western India, who was half-Muslim, and their relationship was very controversial. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for artful direction and visual splendour, his movies are a delight to watch. In Korean terms, this movie would be the equivalent of Hyun Bin being married to Ha Jiwon and then falling in love with Son Yejin.

The story is a real life ancient INDIAN story involving a Maratha ("Hindu") King and a young girl from the next kingdom that was taken over by the Mughals. She is captured and brought to the King and he falls in love with her ( she too falls in love) and the end happens with a war between two kingdoms and in a battle the King accidently slays her thinking she is coming to kill him!! Mastani is the name of the girl!!
There is another song where the Queen sees this romance and challenges Mastani to a singing duel that was part of the film. The maker of the film Sanjay Leela Bhansali always builds lavish recrations of the time the story is set in. You should try and see the MOVIE " Deewani Mastani"
