I like the old NAD stuff. Nice looking, plain and sounded good. I like a lot of old vintage stuff like Rotel, Carver, Marantz, Mckintosh and many of the Japanese stuff as well. Lets face it most of it was made in Japan. I miss the days of the high end stereo.
@@izzzzzz6 Do you fix broken equipment? If so, that might explain why you only see blown NAD amps. All of my 35 year old NAD Monitor Series equipment is still working perfectly in 2021.
@@filmjazz That's great I actually threw one out because i couldn't be bothered to fix it. I have Leak and Quad amps plus some BSS, lab gruppen / Martin audio. Also Rotel and Marantz. Got a couple of Audiolabs sitting right here right now. i have seen 2x NAD's that leaked high voltage into the speakers and destroyed them so i just hope your speakers don't fall prey to the poor protection system, these amps clearly lack a decent speaker protection system.
@@izzzzzz6 I have the 2400 THX amp, but I'm not using it currently, only the 1600 preamp and occasionally the 1700 preamp. There's also a 7600 receiver I got dirt cheap that works but should be checked out. Sounds like I should have the 2400 fully looked over before putting it back into service.
Hey, never post comments but had to say thanks, i pulled my 1600 out of service for a few years debating whether to recap it, loud pops in the phono stage starting and stopping records. Lo and behold there was a pile of brown glue right by the caps near the phono inputs. Popped it off and problems gone. Useable again! Thank you.
When cleaning pots I always spray a little where the moving part meets the main body! It makes them more much more smoothly, especially in old kit! I recently had a Behringer X32 digital mixer that when rotating the controls to sweep the EQ curve - it would do it in random increments which upset a lot of engineers who were using it at the venue! I sprayed a small amount of Isopropyl at the moving part/body connection and it moved way more freely. This removed the juddering effect and got the desk 100% again! Nice vid, good work Sir!
I have this same problem with the volume knob. Every time when the knob is turned up or down, it made a loud hiss/noise before finally settle down. After viewing your video, I think I will try to DIY and clean the affected areas. Thanks for the great idea!

Bought one of these last year. Very good sounding pre-amp and tuner. BTW, it's pronounced N-A-D. NAD's philosophy was to create good sounding equipment with few frills and they mostly succeeded. They had excellent circuit design, but used cheaper Taiwanese parts and manufacturing to keep the costs down. I completely re-capped my 1600 with excellent quality Nichicon electrolytics.

Yes and No. Yes, it does work measuring, and it seems to be accurate. No, not really, because it's now eating batteries, one 9 V battery only lasts a few weeks even with the meter turned off.

This week I recapped my 1020A with run of the mill caps. After that, wow it started to sound very much better three hours in from warm up, more details and bass extension and clarity, like every sound bit has been "de-gloved" from hazes. I have a proton AA1100 preamp that's a rebadged 1155. I like NAD preamps. But my 1700 sounds think and harsh compared to the 1020A. Yea maybe it also needs a recap, too.
NAD's simpler stuff was always pretty good in my experience (the likes of the 3020 etc), but things seemed to go a bit awry when they tried to do stuff with more features - I can't say I was ever a fan of any of their receivers, yet some of their stereo pre/power amp packages sounded fantastic back in the day.
Good documentary, you find that dam glue modern T.V's and mother boards on P.C's.From my own experience with NAD have thought of changing the switching I.C.
Yes Nad was a quality manufacturer known for putting the money inside, not outside to make it just look pretty. I had a Nad amplifier to repair, no sound, it turned out the speaker select switch had quit working leaving all terminals open circuit. Tryed spray cleaning, no effect. Finally i linked the required contacts to make it work again, the owner was told it needs a new switch, but he wasnt bothered, it worked fine, he was happy enough :-). The brown goo possibly upsets high impedence circuits more than low, op-amp inputs sound likely.
Is the upper PCB the tuner? Can it be removed while the pre amp still works? I can get one for not much but I don't need radio, and I want to clean the inside, it looks very dirty.
It's going to be very high indeed, but in a high impedience circuit you don't need much leakage and you have a problem. You can hear it. As soon as I removed the glue from the end of the flat wire where it went to the record dub switch the leakage went away.
I have found solder resin does the same thing just like the circuit glue the resistance is very high but like you said the resistance is high but the voltages and currents in those voltages are significantly affected

I'm not sure one could readily find replacements anymore except eBay stuff from China, and we know how THAT can be. I worked on a 1700 a few months back. The input etc IC's were bad and a bunch of other stuff. Lightning struck. Ugh. Got 'er done though...
You may expect similar conductivity when switches containing grease have been sprayed with deoxid. That grease dissolves, becomes liquid and will conduct and cause shorts.
I have seen it with deoxit. I disassembled the switches, the slush was all over the contacts. I had to clean the contacts with a toothbrush the remove the blubber.
NAD was known for innovative circuit design, with plenty of dynamic headroom on their power amps, and receivers, BUT, their manufacturing quality control was poor, with lousy soldering. I have a NAD 2200PE from 1988. It's a beast, but, the output relays had to be replaced about 10 years ago. The technician who replaced them was marveling about the over sized power supply and capacitors, but, he said the relays were about the crappiest he'd ever seen.
I had a monitor series 7100 receiver it was certainly under rated in power I bought it 26 years ago it was a referb to date I still regret selling it because NAD after the 80’s started to make receivers that were not as good as the 7100 I had a C350 integrated that was a totally over rated and underpowered for the price glad I sold it the 7100 was better and had more head room and dynamics.
Not really because you will be measuring the circuit resistance. You can watch the results on the screen of a vcr with a servo that won't lock and then lock up once the glue is removed.

The problem is royalty free music is "non exclusive" use music. Same with music created using programs like "Smartsound" which builds custom mixes from a database of royalty free content. Someone like Rick Hart will use a music bed of royalty free music and write some lyrics and sing along with the music and publish the result as his copyright music, something that under the license of the royalty free terms he is not permitted to do. Then a 3rd party publishing company will register this remix and it generates a match. Once I file a dispute it is resolved pretty quick, because any publishing house once the gig is up is going to release any claim, because if they don't and it escalates they could find them self in hot water with the original misc producer that sell as royalty free. For stuff created with smartsound that is al you I have to put in the reason for dispute. Just one word, Smartsound and the claim gets released. I could probably do the same for music bakery, but I generally look up the title, and put the link in as well so there is no question where it came from.

Since ive seen no one doing it , i guess im the first . And i have drawn a number of conclusion, obvious from just a few measurements. If anyone interested i will make a video, for example Harman Kardon VS Yamaha VS Chinese AMP KIT Circuit on a Mobile Phone charger , giving you a picture of what is the AMPS output , rather then usual EXCUSE " YOU CANT HAER IT " well i can see it that is for sure
Anyone can measure distortion with a distortion meter and scope. That gear is mostly suited for the design bench. I had all that stuff when I was in the business and did this for a living. These days i work with minimal gear and make the videos using this minimal gear. The type that hobbiests might have. A meter, steering iron and scope. I dont make money doing these repairs. I am lucky if I make 50 bucks working on this stuff. I make much more than that from the advertising on the UA-cam video. I have a great setup in my house with giant speakers, but in the shop I just use a small pair. I return equipment to the original operating level. I am not tuning amps for guitarists that are looking for a specific sound. Just putting consumer gear back in service delivering the same sound it produced before it broke.
no tools needed , i didnt need it , initally i thotuth i would , i have a scope but it cant do FFT but i didnt need anything , its not so much of a distortion measurement as much as it is making sure that all fits , on my Technics EX300, repair was simple , cold solder joint on driver trans making an overload trigger , hence not working , but its old amp and balanced needed shifting by 5%, i cant hear that , but i can offer it now , very very simple , making sure that Sound is Linear , or if it is Tube amp to satisfy the needs for distortion , i didnt criticize you, i watched youre video , late night , didnt sleep at all, i think as i said that you are good , others brake stuff then act smart repairing ,you do genuine stuff , im not saying anything like that , im just saying due to my decdes long producing XP , i can do that stuff with 2 resistors that is all i use . Cant drive the amp tho , its about 10W, but detailed 10W sure .
Im not making 50$ at all , didnt earn anything , i doubt i will , that is why i struggle to offer something that maybe someone will pay for , like paying for Iphone 500$ when its not worth 100$ , that kind of stuff will make me some money , but i need to convince ppl that they need it , and make a trade mark of it , otherwise , its not gonna work , i cant compete with chinese 10$ amps , no one can .
Roger Kerr I used NUTROL on this unit, but have since tried DeoxIT and found it to be very good. will be using that in a future video to test some more.
IMO, NAD is a swift kick in the ... well, nads. Rather have a Carver or a Marantz than NAD ... but stuff from those brands have been known to use that crappy glue, too.

Someone was whining about a typo and suggested I use a spell checker. When I entered a file name to save a render I had a typo in the file name, and of course youtube uses the file name as the title, and I didn't correct it, as it was probably 2 in the morning when I was starting the upload, and I was tired and not paying attention. But it seems that about 20 people had to point it out, like I really give a shit. And then to make a personal attack that because there was a typo that I must not know what I am talking about. All I can say to those people is 2 words, and the first one starts with "F"

I watch blue glow electronics channel also and a bunch of people in comments just had to point out that when he was pointing at a component and said resistor that it was actually a diode. Seriously, he's been restoring amps for 20+ years and his videos are great learning and you're going to waste your time correcting him when it's blindly obvious to even a child what that component is. I see people do that on your channel all the time like OMG THATS DANGEROUS HIGH VOLTAGE are you crazy and I just have to laugh. They think you are someone who just started doing this last week.
Someone said it to me many years ago, and since then every time I see NAD, that phrase comes into my head :) The other one is BOSE, which nearly always makes me think "Buy Other Sound Equipment". BTW @12voltvids, have you ever had any of those "White Van Speaker Scam" things in for repair or look at? Which is like really cheapo amps and speakers, very poorly made, and are truly awful.

The fit and finish on this unit leaves much to desire. Big gaps between the front bezel and top cover.
They had excellent circuit design, but used very cheap quality Taiwanese parts. That's how they kept the costs low.
RCA made by Hitachi had this glue (compact VCR) I worked on many of them

Owned a 1600 once. Good sound + features. Unreliable, tho'.and very hard to work on.

I have see that wnen idiots use WD40 as a contact cleaner, but naver experienced it with Deoxit or Nutrol

The 7100 has a power amp built in but looks the same as this 6100.

First units I saw it in were Japanese VCRs. It is a problem whenever it has been used. Don't know what type of cement it originally was.

If it is a fluorescent display then you either have a voltage to the display tube that is low, or the display tube itself is wearing out.

no tools needed , i didnt need it , initally i thotuth i would , i have a scope but it cant do FFT but i didnt need anything , its not so much of a distortion measurement as much as it is making sure that all fits , on my Technics EX300, repair was simple , cold solder joint on driver trans making an overload trigger , hence not working , but its old amp and balanced needed shifting by 5%, i cant hear that , but i can offer it now , very very simple , making sure that Sound is Linear , or if it is Tube amp to satisfy the needs for distortion , i didnt criticize you, i watched youre video , late night , didnt sleep at all, i think as i said that you are good , others brake stuff then act smart repairing ,you do genuine stuff , im not saying anything like that , im just saying due to my decdes long producing XP , i can do that stuff with 2 resistors that is all i use . Cant drive the amp tho , its about 10W, but detailed 10W sure .
Im not making 50$ at all , didnt earn anything , i doubt i will , that is why i struggle to offer something that maybe someone will pay for , like paying for Iphone 500$ when its not worth 100$ , that kind of stuff will make me some money , but i need to convince ppl that they need it , and make a trade mark of it , otherwise , its not gonna work , i cant compete with chinese 10$ amps , no one can .

I used NUTROL on this unit, but have since tried DeoxIT and found it to be very good. will be using that in a future video to test some more.

Deoxi T you only need a small amount, one can should last you a long time.

The nit pickers, that point out a typo in a description, or rag because they think a word isn't pronounced properly, really need to get a life. Someone was whining about a typo and suggested I use a spell checker. When I entered a file name to save a render I had a typo in the file name, and of course youtube uses the file name as the title, and I didn't correct it, as it was probably 2 in the morning when I was starting the upload, and I was tired and not paying attention. But it seems that about 20 people had to point it out, like I really give a shit. And then to make a personal attack that because there was a typo that I must not know what I am talking about. All I can say to those people is 2 words, and the first one starts with "F"
I'd go whole hog on'em and just put typos on purpose everywhere and even a note that the typos are on purpose. hehehe :D
Yeah, I see assholes like that commenting on every channel. I watch blue glow electronics channel also and a bunch of people in comments just had to point out that when he was pointing at a component and said resistor that it was actually a diode. Seriously, he's been restoring amps for 20+ years and his videos are great learning and you're going to waste your time correcting him when it's blindly obvious to even a child what that component is.
I see people do that on your channel all the time like OMG THATS DANGEROUS HIGH VOLTAGE are you crazy and I just have to laugh. They think you are someone who just started doing this last week.

Someone said it to me many years ago, and since then every time I see NAD, that phrase comes into my head :) The other one is BOSE, which nearly always makes me think "Buy Other Sound Equipment".
BTW @12voltvids, have you ever had any of those "White Van Speaker Scam" things in for repair or look at? Which is like really cheapo amps and speakers, very poorly made, and are truly awful.
