Gotta love that classic Tele tone. I'm more of a metal guy, but Devin Townsend has expanded my horizons to include the beautiful, ethereal tones you can get with a Tele and some delay, and I have never tried a lipstick neck p/up in a Tele that I didn't like.
These two videos on types of single coil pickups has been a real education. Thank you very much, it's extremely valuable! I will have to watch them several times.
Great job! I'd really like to see a Part 3 with all the oddball single coils: Rickenbacker Toaster, Rickenbacker High-Gain, DeArmond Dynasonic, DeArmond Gold Foil, Teisco Gold Foil, and even the Fender Mustang, along with a repeat of a vintage-voiced Strat and Tele for reference.
And when you do the inevitable humbucker video, could you please do: Gibson PAF vs. Gibson/Epiphone Mini, Gibson Firebird, Gretsch Filtertron, Fender Wide Range, and something or other from PRS?
Haha, yeah I still remember this. We made this video years ago when I still learned german. And you know how it is when you focus on learning a new language... it messes with all the other languages you know. 🤣 Cheers //Kris
Awesome video!!! Thank you so much! My favorites were the tele and the P90s. But the strats sounded amazing too! I already habe a strat and a tele so i need to get P90s next!
thank You for all the hard work putting these videos together. but I wanted to remind ppl looking into Single coils Lipstick Pickups , Lace Sensors, Gold and Silver foil Pickups. can find these type @ Guitar Fetish, Lace, aftermarket builders like Lollar.
I get you depends on what you want... For me the Tele has a very very nice sparkle without sounding thin or icepicky, and the p90s actually sound the most like they are balanced similar to an "acoustic guitar" .... the Jazzmaster feels inbetween those 2 . Those 3 are also my top 3 (in which order depends on the music style). But I only have a p90 guitar ("PRS" shape) coz i like the scalelenght shorter than the Fender ones also i like having more than 21 frets... As a guitarist i still would love to own a Tele and a Jazzmaster though, even played a jazzmaster in a store and really liked it, sadly i personally find the jazzmaster guitar shape kinda ... lets say "weird" (some would call it ugly ) :D they feel good to play but ... yeah ... Kinda sad they dont put Jazzmaster pickups on other guitars than the jazzmaster :D
agree, you can play so many different styles on them ... From Jazz to Black Sabbath (even acoustic parts) and they allways sound very good. Maybe not allways "Perfect" ... but allways usable. And if you want to use veeery high gain, the humcancelling middle position sounds actually not too bad with that. (at least on my p90 guitar)
Hi Chris great informative video and great playing. I particularly like p90 they are great clean and produce amazing distortion tones. Keep the cool vids coming 🤘
Hey Anders, thx a lot man! I'm a huge p90 fan myself, so I totally understand you. They also sound ridiculously good with lower tunings and thicker strings. Try it if you can! ;-) //cheers, Kris
Really good videos! it helped me a lot! Clear comparisons! From what I have researched and from what I understand, no active EMG pickups are single coil. They all rely on hum canceling with 2 coils in a humbucking configuration going to a programable op amp inside the pickup. But they sound very good. I have found that with those using 2 of them in the bridge and middle position at the same time, doesn't quite have the "Sultens of swing" sound that I like but they sound and work great!
Thanks for your feedback. The debate about 'true' single coils, noiseless and active is, up to this day, a no-concrete-answer question. Everyone has it's own needs and flavors!
Hi Kris, nice video series, thanks! I have a little out-of-context question: can we buy this very nice sound level meter blinking right next to you? At Thomann's?
Congrats for the Channel!! Amazing! I‘m actually impressed..After living in Germany for 5 years now I am glad you guys decided to shootout a Channel in english!! I can See already the subscriptions rising.. Ps: I would love to have the possibility to have someone with your knowledge at Thomann shop to get some advices and recommendations for a new “yes used” stratocaster (not really chasing new models stuff) By the way I was impressed also with your guest Mick Taylor!! 👍 well done
It's the Victory V40 that you can see on the left side. Pretty much everything on 12 o'clock, no Mid-Kick, some Reverb, Master at about 11 o'clock. Every time you hear some additional drive it's the Lovepedal Super Six. Kris briefly goes over the setup at the beginning of the first part of this video, link is in the description :) //Philipp
egregion they lack some character, probably because of their very balanced, flat frequency response. And they sound so clear and dynamic that it's almost uncomfortable. Quality is best though
Man, the tele middle position 😍😍😍

Don't forget lipsticks.
After years of humb/PAFs and strat single coils I have found P90s to be absolutely wonderful.
Great video, thanks 👍⭐⭐⭐
You're welcome!
These 2 Parts were so damn freaking cool😃
3:33 "it's a way kleiner" 😂 best part of the video😆

Very extensive! Loved it! Please keep making good content. Very good host
thank you!
Great comparisons! I love the Pat Metheny "James" tossed in there too :)
Rarely do I find such a good video!
That Knaggs is beautiful...
Both videos are very good
8:28 Love that sound
Man, p90s, especially clean p90s, are so underrated.

I'm SO GLAD that active pickups are always black. That way it's really easy to overlook them when shopping for pickups.
Nice , is all your playing so Frantic? No Danelectro Lipstick pickups?
I liked Knaggs Kenai P90, but i don't Know if It has enaugh "twang" for playing Country music.
Great video, really enjoyed it, but, what amp are you using and how do you have it set up? Or did I miss that video?

does that knaggs come with a treble bleed..??? It really sounded like it retained a lot of treble when the volume was rolled almost of .
In der Beschreibung steht, dass am Anfang der Neck Pickup gespielt wird. Sollte wohl Bridge heißen 😉
Benedikt danke dir, ist ausgebessert :)
Excellent videos! Can you please do a follow up with the Eric Clapton mid-boost mod? Danke! :)

“And second of all its way klei... kleiner.“ Wait, what? :D
Do you even german, mate?

EMG makes the best sounding single coils no question.

Which Pedals do you use here?
What's the song at 1:45 sounds rlly familiar might just be similar to a song

@@JeremiasBonifacio thx

Would like to know as well!
