Save the Cat helped me most with my characters and their depth and arc, rather than the actual story and outlining itself.
Definitely! I think that in turn helped fix some of the structure problems I was having earlier too. That might have been what triggered the initial "aha"! Bahaha.

This is what I want to try doing novellas
As someone who just made a two-chapter detour from her outline, but being quite happy with the result, I can proudly say that no, outliners do not always stick to their outline.
But on another note: recently I got into the habit of naming my chapters (even though the titles will never make it into the final novel) to give myself a theme to work with. And it's been a lot of song titles. And it works: it motivates me and offers me a little more consistency
“Save the Cat Writes a Novel” was so helpful for me, both in terms of plot pacing but also in preventing writer’s block.
I wrote my first YA novel-in-verse without it & the project went nowhere. I used it for my second and that’s the project my agent signed me for & I’m on sub with now! ✨✨✨

I recently got the book for myself as I've always had a hard time around the midpoint of my stories. This book has not only helped me realize why that is, but has given me a few ideas as to how to fix my old stories and maybe even finish them. Overall, I do love the book, but just like with every book out there, it's not for everyone. :D

I'm definitely not a STC convert, although I have gone through it and found it helpful in many places. I think ultimately my problem with STCWAN (and a ton of writing books do this, many more than STC) is the rhetoric around it. It very much gives off the vibe of "Last book on writing you will ever need," and "Behold the universal structure of storytelling" which I find.... deeply frustrating.
Like it's one thing to say here is a structure that works, it's what I use, here we can see it in a variety of iterations. It's another thing to be like I HAVE UNLOCKED THE SECRETS OF STORYTELLING IN THE HUMAN PSYCHE. I get that it sells books and that there can be value outside of the tone (I think for STCWAN there definitely is) but also I genuinely can't handle it. It feels reductive and self-congratulatory and I'm not here for it.

I agree. I finally read last week it and although there were some points which I was able to practically apply to my outline ( but this is true of almost every craft book I've read) I feel the hype is completely underserved. I don't know what kind of craft books the fans are reading but I know I've read many books that are better or on the same level.
I especially resent the parts where the author states unequivocally that this is the only way plotting can done and there are no exceptions because I was able to instantly think of several examples where her rules didn't apply.
@@notnow6946 Exactly! And it's just WILD to me that you would even attempt to argue that your formula applies to all stories. It is such a dramatic assertion and there doesn't seem to be much point in it?

This is super interesting - I really loved STC and I never felt any need to read the novel version, as I figured the basic structure and approach would be the same in both books. So it's great to see that you got so much value from this version!
I've been binging your videos while writing, and can I say how comforting it is to write with somebody, someone with similar goals and visions for their life. Especially during this semi-quarantined life when I feel so apart from people. Great video!

I haven’t watched the video yet but I’m going to just say YES IT’S WORTH IT. STC is by far the best writing craft book I’ve ever read, not only for what it taught me but because it was just enjoyable to read! I had three epiphanies about what I needed to do to improve my plot by, like, page 30. I can’t wait to see what you thought of it.
Every time you were like "So I've had an epiphany" I did a little happy dance. So glad you got something out of STC!
Also, as an outliner, I can confirm that we don't follow our outlines to a T. I've never written anything I didn't have to re-outline as I went along and/or after I'd finished, because of new ideas and plot and character fixes that the process of writing sparked. I will always write with an outline, but I will also always stray from that outline to make it better.
I think you'll love outlining a new project with the beat sheet! It's great for what you used it for, but using it from the very beginning of a project is life changing (or at least it was for me, lol). The thing this method really helps me with the most is my character arcs. I used to suck at making the characters grow throughout the course of a book, and now it feels so natural because I get it planned out from the get go.
I put the questions for each chapter that must be answered from the Beat Sheet on the notes area of Scrivener (Windows version) so I won't miss anything (changes made as needed). It makes a big difference. Always enjoy your videos and following your journey. When I want to procrastinate I binge watch your topic videos to get inspired to get back to work or just to listen to while cleaning. Thank you for sharing your imagination (cooking with classics) with viewers. I am writing & revising the draft of book 1 while outlining book 2 and planning the next few. Happy writing!

This book is my go to when i start feeling that my story is getting muddy. Reading sections help me refocus the story and pull me out of the muck. I've fallen behind on your channel and now i have to go back to find out all the context of two writing locations and Zelda's arrival!
Idk if this counts as an ”aha” moment, but I had an idea for a new story. I had the characters, and what was going to happen. The only things I didn't have were the ending and motivation for my characters. So I called my friend who also writes (btw I made her do nano last year and she loved it and is doing it again this year) and as I was explaining to her what I wanted to happen the ending hit me. I quickly grabbed my notebook and wrote down what I had thought and from the ending, I found what motivates my characters.

I'm probably one of the last writers on Earth who hasn't read this book! There was a Writer's Digest article on outlining in a way that keeps the middle of your book interesting, which I have been using for one of my series, and I really like! But it's always interesting to learn new tips, so I'll have to pick this one up sometime :D

It was a joy to watch your process with this book, especially since I went through a lot of the same phases when I first got my copy. I started out skeptic, but as I read through it I constantly had moments where I just felt like knots in my story where dissolving and things became much clearer and more structured.
A really small thing that really drew me to StCWaN was the fact that the author didn't talk down to the reader. I might have gotten into a weird corner of the book market, but I came across so many writer's aid books that already start out with basically "Fat chance you will ever finish a book" and "Writing is only for a certain type (and you're probably not one of them)", it was infuriating. (A friend of mine compared it to cookbooks telling you how likely it was that you would injure yourself preparing food or burning your house down in the process, haha!) So, in that regards alone I found Save the Cat much more professional and helpful. :)
And P.S.: Love that Zelda added some personal character to your copy, haha! XD

There are a couple versions for the type of writing you’re doing! Screenplays, indie films, novels... they’re great starter books with really helpful building blocks

Jaime bought Save the Cat Writes a Novel sometime last year, I think, and I bought it from her earlier this year. I read maybe about half of it and skimmed thru the rest. I still have it on my bookshelf to refer back to, but I don't know how helpful it'll be when I get back into the heavy editing of SOTP.
I just started revisiting the story's current structure last night. I may be cutting the POV count down from 4 to 2, which is going to be LOTS of work. It may be worth it, though. Last night, I wrote out a scene list/rough outline of the draft to help me keep track of what happens at which point in the story. From there, I'm going to figure out how to make specific scenes work in a different POV and whether some of them will even be necessary if/when we restructure. It's gonna be fun...🤪 lol
On that note, here's to having lots of fun with our writing, cuz that's what it's all about! Best of luck with yours! 😊

I definitely recommend giving it a try! It really can't hurt and I think everyone is destined to have some sort of "aha," if only a small one, when reading this.
Duck Donuts is the holy grail of warm customized doughnuts!!! I first discovered them while vacationing in Duck, North Carolina (where they originated). People form a tremendously long line as early as 6am to get it over there.
This was fun! I admit, I haven't read StC yet and I'm also a bit of a skeptic as well, but I'm going to be reading it and trying to implement it for the first time for this year's NaNoWriMo, along with using Scrivener for the first time, so it'll be an interesting change of pace from how I usually do things :)

Writing my outline out on flashcards prompted my last aha moment. I knew I needed more to happen in the second act but I was struggling. Having a physical representation of my timeline made it easier for me to see what could fill in the gaps.
I took some of Jessica Brody's classes on Udemy and I have to say I love using Save the Cat, but I kind of mix it with The Hero's Journey to get my own mix of story beats. I'm probably doing it wrong, but hey, I'm having fun! lol
I recently purchased the book and I havent gotten very far, but it did help me have an ah-ha moment which resulted in me needing to add another chapter in the beginning. So, yeah thanks for the extra work ha ha

Definitely!!! I got more out of it than I expected and I think for some people it makes a HUGE difference.
I made a Scrivener manuscript template using this and my notes are there as well.
Yeah, I read them both (I did skip around the screenwriting one) ad it just felt that Brody was much clearer with her writing and Easier to understand. I have a habit of getting very obsessed (thinking about them constantly) over tiny inconsistencies or confusion in games, guides, etc. so the first book was slightly annoying for me to read. I loved save the cat though and it helped me a ton!
I have to be honest, I am reeeeaaally not a save the cat fan (although to be fair, I read the movie version, not the novel version). I'm excited to hear what you think!
I was a huge skeptic and agree that the movie version is like....it's fine? But didn't wow me so I didn't get the hype of why changing it to a "novel version" would make it any better. I think Jessica does a much better job honestly. That's the reason it's better. She expands on the best parts of the screenwriting version.
I read the “movie script” version and realized fairly quickly that not all novels had to be screenplays. In fact, most people who love reading want more from their books than can fit in 90 minutes on the big screen. (I guess they go more like 2 hours now, but hey, car crashes and special effects just add viewing minutes, not always plot points.) Just my opinion. :D The “novel” version sounds like a wonderful craft book to add to my collection.
Ahhh I didn't know the novel one was a different author! Given all these great experiences with it, I agree Regina, I will definitely look into it as my next craft book!

I like using the Save the Cat beat sheet. I’m currently writing a novel with 5 separate antagonist each with their own main plot, sub plots and POV chapters. I got real lost in weeds until I started using the StC beat sheet as an outline. However I only use that beat sheet to stay organized and get a first draft done. After that it’s like they say in Pirates of the Caribbean: it’s more like guidelines than actual rules. I follow the story where it takes me during drafts 2 and onwards.

i love Blake Synder and i have STC but i had no idea there was a writing a novel version!!
I normally never outline my stories unless I'm really into them, but for some reason I found the strength to do a chapter-by-chapter outline for a random adventure thriller novel I decided to write on a whim after seeing the film "Everest," which sparked my interest in learning about mountaineering and also prompted this story. I'm having a hard time choosing between this one and the dark romance I'm also working on for Camp NaNoWriMo, so I guess we'll see what my brain decides the night before Camp, as is my usual method XD
I put the beats into a spreadsheet. My columns were Act, Beat, Where in word count, beat name, description. I printed each act on its own page in landscape and taped it to my wall above my monitors. I also formated a version for 5x7 index cards. I'll be adding another column in a Worksheet version for "My Story Planning," where I can make notes for each beat for my own story. I'm also thinking about making folders/subfolders in Scrivener for Act, Beats, Chapter, and Scenes, so I have the information all in one place while I'm writing.
This might be useful for me! My biggest trouble has always been how to layout and start a story from it's beginning. Even back when I was doing GCSE English for college I was always so stuck on a scene even when my lecturer had given us a scenario that we had to work with. Which really bugs me as I have a few ideas for a good story swimming around in my head but I have no idea how to start that first chapter.
I love Save the Cat! I read Jessica Brody's version first, and I loved it, then read the original save the cat... and no offense Jessica Brody, but I loved the original more. But both are amazing and have their own strong points. I like the structure of the original Save the Cat better, but I like Jessica's explanations of the genres more. Both are great, and both really helped me with my stories.

1) Have you tried/researched flax seed oil for Duke? Older dogs really benefit from a few drops on their dinner, to make them more puppy like. It helps for stiff, arthritis and maybe their mind too? Mum's dogs had it and the change was dramatic and they lived a longer, happier life.
2) Wow, I would be in bed for three weeks if I had red wine, donuts and coffee! That mix would give me sore joints, mind fog, stuffy nose, sore throat, and tummy issues! When I add wheat, plus sugar, plus cows milk, I can turn into a beast. So now I hope I can find some gluten free donuts!
3) Save the cat! Writes a novel.....I got my library to buy it, then I borrowed, transcribed it, reborrowed it, and then bought a copy which never came, and bought another copy that I had to wait for!
What did it teach me? I found I had the wrong main character, (an aha moment) I found I am writing a Institutionalized genre. It is fun, and can be picked up anywhere, it is easy to read, with simple short examples to follow. I have made little cards in various colours that I can attach to my index cards with a paperclip. I had fun making a set of heading beats, with colours that are appropriate to other beats on cardboard pieces 3cm x 10cm as in the back of the book, corkboard is a very visual way to see the novel.
What do I like about it? well if you are stuck,lost or procrastinating, it is a fail safe. So because it is fun, it is easy to put to practice....like you did Kate, with the questions and answers at each chapter. It removes self doubt.

I read through STCWAN recently and it helped me fix some issues in my wip. I'm not a big fan of outlines in general but it did help me a lot. I don't think it's the magical cure all it claims to be but still worth the read

I finally gave in as well and bought the novel version. I like it so far but have a hard time seeing why everyone thinks this is the best book ever. I can use some parts for sure but sometimes you need to follow that writer's gut instead.

I've not read either of the Save the Cat craft books, but when my writing professor in college taught loglines she said it wasn't about telling someone the entire story, but to intrigue them enough to read the description.

I thought your logline was good. If you really want to add her becoming an accidental PI you could add it with the combining her cyber and real-life part. Something like "Now she must learn to be a PI combining her cyber and real-life before she becomes the next victim.
I'm an outliner and can confirm that I do not follow an outline slavishly. I am constantly changing it and tweaking it as the story evolves.
In other news, I am in love with Zelda, despite the book-chewing naughtiness.
The majority of Author tube or the authorities of writing and editing are from the West or Countries that treasures reading and the writing industry. Here in the region of Cordillera in the Philippines, it took me about 8 years to write and publish my book. The main reason is the Arts in general like writing, music, painting, sculpture, acting and the like are considered as "hobbies" and not a "real careers". People are focused on what they consider as "real careers" that are "paying jobs" like farming, carpentry, professions, businesses and the like. This is mainly due to the low standard of living or poverty that are prevalent here. It was difficult for me to find editors, beta readers, critic partners, support systems (family and friends who believed on my career choice), time to write (have to hustle in the real world to fulfill basic needs and to exhausted in my free time) and others. I end up skipping some steps and submitted my manuscript this year in a publishing company willing to help me publish as a novice writer. I don't know if this is necessary but it is my reality as a writer.
Confession time, I also never read Save the Cat. Maybe I can find it as an audiobook somewherw
I read the original STC and thought it can be useful but still not a huge fan. I guess because it has so many beats, it risks end up being a bit too formulaic/cliche? But I should give another try to the novel version.
Unrealted but I wonder if you'd try Superstructure by Bell, personally I find it more interesting to work with as it's still "structured" but less heavy handed (to me at least)!

I like the book save the cat! I also have to read the whole thing. I found out I had a different main character for my third novel. Oops
I love Save The Cat. I'm also a huge fan of Romancing The Beats, which is taking the Save The Cat method and creating a romance book model.
I need to look up more about Romancing The Beats!! I think it could really help for some of my novellas. :)
