    Ali Waris, I am addressing you from Virginia. It’s a bitterly cold and frosty morning. Sitting in my family room by the fireplace with a cup of coffee, I’m listening to your podcast. Since nostalgia is being discussed, I find myself feeling nostalgic as well because the conversation revolves around Lahore, Krishnanagar, the film industry, Pakistan’s film industry, movie theaters, and Lakshmi Chowk.
    As cold as it is outside, this podcast has stirred a very warm feeling within me. Your beautiful, simple way of talking, combined with such informative and thoughtful questions, is truly delightful. Keep shining like this!

    Mr.warsi I have listened to each word of your interview with dr.sahib. I am much younger then dr.sahib, having been born in 1953. But my knowledge, and liking for the movies both indian and Pakistani is though not equal to him but little less. Though I was born in a backward place like jhang but I studied in government college Lahore for 4 years doing my intermediate and graduation from then and later, doing my l.l.b. from the adjacent p.u. law college. I saw my first movie, Bhai Bhai, in 1959 at the age of 6 years and after that there was no looking back. I grew up listening to the various programs of radio Ceylon, particularly Binaca geetmala, and commercials of ready to release films, in the megical voice of Amin sihani, which introduced me the new generation of actors, directors , music directors and other people associated with a particular film. Cutting it short I want to add or to say enlighten u about a few things, firstly, u saw Santosh Kumar in naila ,which was produced in 1965, by then he had put on a lot. He was definitely the most handsome actor of subcontinent if u see him in qatil, wada, saath lakh, mukhra, pattan and sarfrosh, all made in the fifties. To quote fareedon Irani the iconic cinematographer of India, Santosh had the most beautiful and photogenic face and smart figure in the sub continent film industry. Secondly, this is an admitted fact that the ancestral home of Kapoor family was smundri. They migrated to Peshawar after prithwi raj Kapoor got a job in Peshawar police. And lastely. Dev Anand writes about pre partition Lahore,in his autobiography, " romancing with life" that Lahore at that time was the most fashionable city of India, and government college was the best educational institution on this side of soyaz canal, and it's students were considered the elite of nation.

    The language of Bollywood is predominantly Urdu. Before the partition Urdu was the language of the educated Punjabis and it was written in Nastaliq.
    The Hindu nationalists hate Urdu because it was historically associated with the Muslim culture and civilization in South Asia, and it also became the the language of the elite during the late Mughal period. There is a reason why the overwhelming majority of the Urdu poets and writers were Muslims. Calling it Hindi is an insult to both the Urdu language and the Muslim elite who created and nurtured it.

    • @priyamastibhati
      @priyamastibhati 2 дні тому +3

      Just importing foreign words and foreign script does not make Hindi a non-Hindi language. Urdu is persianized Hindi, nothing else. Like the modern Hindi with English words mixed in by the modern elites, it could not be called a “new” language. All Hindi, all the time. Sorry that the pseudo folks want to call their brand of Hindi language not-Hindi.

    • @User-b-o9h
      @User-b-o9h 2 дні тому +2

      @@priyamastibhati Urdu evolved as Persian and Arabic words were gradually incorporated into regional dialects like Braj Bhasha and Avadhi during the long Muslim rule, which is why Amir Khusro is often regarded as the first Urdu poet.
      Hindi, on the other hand did not emerge as a distinct language until the mid 19th century. The British officials at that time at Fort William College called upon Hindu Sanskrit scholars to create textbooks in local vernaculars. Encouraged by John Gilchrist, these scholars developed a new standardized language which became known as modern Hindi. This new form of Hindi was essentially a Sanskritized version of Urdu written in Nagri.

    • @priyamastibhati
      @priyamastibhati День тому +2

      @ No need to peddle propaganda of the Urdu chauvinists. Braj Bhasha and Awadhi are regional dialects of the background khari boli Hindi in the northwest of India. Just sprinkling of arabi and farsi words does not make a “new” language. Hindi was, is, and will be the local language.Urdu a subset.

Another observation I've made about Sindhis is that they typically have oval shaped faces and that unique darker skin tone that is common among Punjabis from central Punjab is less prevalent among them.

    What an extraordinary guest. Dr Ishtiaq Ahmed is a great thinker and writer. But what a fair singer he is too. I have had the pleasure of meeting him in Delhi early this year. I look forward to his views on UA-cam and his books 😊

    @ 13:20 I need to correct you. Urdu, also known as Lashkari Zaban, originated in the army camps, around Delhi in the 12th Century, as a pidgin dialect of Hindvi (old HIndi), spoken by Persian and Turk soldiers in other words, Hindi with large Arabic, Persian and Turkic vocabulary. The grammatical structure of Hindi and Urdu is identical. However, modern Hindi has mainly Sanskrit vocabulary, and Urdu originally had Persian and Turkish. The Persian term, Zaban-i-Urdu means the language of the camps. In Turkish, Ordu, meaning the language of Hordes. Pakistanis have corrupted Urdu, by replacing Persian and Turkish by Arabic vocabulary and partially Arabic grammatical structure. Today, Pakistani Urdu is an inferior pidgin dialect of Hindi and Arabic - not the real Urdu.

      Are you another troll from the wrong side of the border? Your knowledge about the history of Urdu is apparently as pathetic as your proficiency in English. The newly arrived Muslims referred to all the Prakrit dialects spoken between Punjab and Bengal as Hindavi not only because they were unable to distinguish between them - those dialects were also much more similar to each other than they are today. You’re talking baloney here as Urdu spoken today is similar to the one spoken by Ghalib or Sir Syed in the mid of the 19th century, no one has replaced the Persian and Turkish words with Arabic. Hindi was still a glimmer of hope in the eyes of the Hindu nationalists when Urdu was thriving and had become the lingua franca of much of the northern part of South Asia. Try again!!!
