The Truth About The Bloodhounds And Jack The Ripper.

  • There are all manner of stories about how the Metropolitan Police used bloodhounds in their attempts to capture Jack the Ripper - or, at least, to capture the unknown miscreant who was carrying out the Whitechapel murders.
The person who is most often lampooned in accounts of the use of the dogs, is the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir Charles Warren.
You will read time an again how Warren's escapades with the hounds bordered on the inept. They hunted him down, says one version of the story. They got lost in a London fog, goes another version.
The truth of the matter is that, many of the stories about the bloodhounds are not actually true, but were, in fact, dreamt up by Warren's enemies in the press in order to attack his reputation at the help of London's police force.
In this video, you will learn the true story of how the bloodhounds came to be tried in the hunt for Jack the Ripper. You will discover which of the stories about Warren were true and which of them were false.
We will also uncover the real reason why, after a few trials to test their efficiency, the animals were taken home by their owner, leaving the police without any "Detective Bloodhounds" with which to hunt the perpetrator of the Whitechapel atrocities.

Thank you Richard for setting the record straight.
It would have been interesting to see if the bloodhounds would have picked up a scent of the Ripper from Eddowe’s torn apron found in Goulston St. At 2.20am there wouldn’t have been that many people roaming about in the streets of Whitechapel, and the dogs possibly would have had a chance to track Jack.

If the hounds were used on Polly Nichols or Annie Chapman, sounds like they would’ve had an extremely high chance of catching the ripper. Astounding!

Imagine all these decades, author after author has been barking up the wrong tree! More than that, leading untold thousands of fascinated readers a stray. Thank you, Mr. Jones, for another excellent exposé on the media dog show, and proving once again that the Police were far more thorough than some tradition suggests. Sir Charles Warren made the effort and proved the bloodhounds' potential, but the opportunity to put them on the murderer's trail never materialized, no fault to the Police. Would that they had been available on the night of the Double Event, with not only the two crime scenes but also the Goulston Street apron to make scents of. Okay, enough of my bad puns, but I appreciate the magnificent storytelling as always.

Rather than seeing the differences with the Victorian society compared to today it always strikes me how similar it is!
Fancy the press stretching the truth for some humorous and eye catching headlines! 😉 Some things never change!

I'd think that all the smells in London would really confuse the bloodhounds or the dogs were just trying to get the hell out of smelly old London.

Another interesting piece of information that I can't recall ever reading in any of my fairly extensive browsing of the literature on the case though perhaps my memory is failing since my reading was done a long time ago.
But if it had ever been gone into in this detail, I think I would remember something. As always, your narration and organisation of the story is absorbing

Great Stuff. Always thought Warren was unfairly characterised as incompetent. But as an ex military man he saw his job more in terms of public order than in solving crimes through detective work.

I was quite distracted by the drawing of Charles Warren looking like Stalin, but apart from that, great video.
It is an excellent point that had the dogs been able for Mary Nichols' murder, for instance, before lots of people contaminated the scene, they maybe could have caught the murderer.

I live in Scarborough and these dogs are all but forgotten, many locals have never heard of them. Edwin Brough had Wyndyate House (not Windale has mentioned here) built in 1885 with magnificent dog kennels. These kennels are still there in ruins and if Travellodge had had there way many years ago they would have been demolished but the British Bloodhound Society and The Victorian Society stepped in to save them, but they are in need of much work to save them. I’ve spoken to the owners of Scalby Manor (renamed in the 30s) but they don’t seem bothered. They are missing out on a tourist attraction but as I said many people here have never heard about these dogs. One story goes that the bones of Burgho are behind the panels in the main window. Edwin Brough never received any payment for use of his dogs he would later put Wyndyate House up for rent and he moved to Hastings where he died in 1929 and his body brought back to Scarborough and buried at St Laurence’s Church In Scalby. Wyndyate was then sold and in 1930 became Scalby Manor.

Excellent and informative Video. I do have a couple of questions though.
Question 1: I've watched this video three times now. I am fascinated with the idea of bloodhounds being used to track the Ripper. The narrator telling the story names the bloodhound's owner as a Mr. Bruff. Watching the video with subtitles the caption reads Mr. Bruff. However, the 1888 artist rendering showing the bloodhounds being trained (13:57) name the owner as a Mr. Brough. Is the later's spelling, the same as the narrator's pronunciation? Is Brough pronounced Bruff or is the artist's captioning amiss?
Question 2: Sir Charles Warren had his doubts about the bloodhounds. He wondered how a dog could be expected to find the killer without a piece of the Rippers clothing or a sample of his blood. He was assumming he needed the Ripper's scent. However, as the whitechapel worker had asked (2:05): If the Ripper had gotten any of the victims blood on himself, then hunting down the Ripper should have been as easy as giving the victims, NOT the Ripper's scent to the dogs. Right? As long as the crime was discovered in the small hours of the morning before thousands of people poured into the streets. Was this idea ever addressed by Sir Charles Warren?
I know they are called bloodhounds, but can they actually tell one humans blood from another? I thought maybe they worked off of things like body odor or clothing smell. Sorry this might be a question for a bloodhound expert.

Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed the video, and thank you for saying so. As far as I could find out, the name Brough was pronounced Bruff - as in rough or tough. As for Warren's comments, I think he was being pressured to do something, and he had no faith in bloodhounds for the reasons he stated. I think the general objection was that Whitechapel was too busy for the bloodhounds to track a scent for any great distance. There were thousands of people in the streets throughout the night. I don't actually know whether bloodhounds are able to differentiate between different people's blood. My inkling would be no, but I am no bloodhound expert. Hope this answers your questions.

There wouldn't be that much blood on the killer if he cut the throat from behind.
The scent of the victim may be on the killer if he cut from behind. You have to use the body of the victim for stability.
    Bloodhounds could have been used.
