I seen The Toy as a kid. I might do a commentary about this on my other channel. I did enjoy this movie as kid and I wouldn't want to see this remade today either. It's best left in the past. I heard on the set that Pryor and Gleason smoked a few joints and got high together.
Well, weve had silver streak, stir crazy, & blazing saddles. More recently theres been oh brother where art thou. And I must admit with all the black activist & black racists like al sharrpton & jesse jackson, I dont know how they released that movie without lawsuits alleging racism against blacks
*@Supremo* Ha! You make it seem like I must think the USA has millions of black racists. I good & well know there's not. Well, what would you call al sharpton, jesse jackson, & louis farrakhan? Benevolent?
I learned recently after all these decades I had no idea The Toy (1982) with Richard Pryor was a remake of a French film from only 6 years prior called The Toy (Le jouet). The Richard Prior version is identical to its the French movie and copied many of the original scenes
@@gottabereelmoviereviews There are some clips of it on youtube. A short clip of the toy store/wonderwheel-like scene is titled "Le Jouet (1976) Bande Annonce VF"
This would NOT play well…he brought a black man as a PET no matter how you try to manipulate your nostalgia. I remember enjoying it at the time…it was Pryor and he was hilarious in this but I see it for EXACTLY what it was! We can swallow anything if you change the recipe and make it easier to swallow. It’s NOT JUST a movie. Jesus, we still eat Pig guts and cry over it because we feel like we made lemonade outta lemons! The film and it’s varied reception by the bk community is a case study. Many, far too many, are still willing to be taken advantage of FOR the right Price. Doesn’t matter how degrading or demeaning as long as we’re proper compensated. Pryor agreeing to do the movie said that OUT LOUD and it continues with other Bk comedians, a Million will do it, any stereotype you want for laugh. We had a soft spot for Richard and still do which is why so many bk people still can’t call it what it was…degrading to all of US. Instead, they call it cute and endearing, “poor baby didn’t have ANYBODY to talk to,” so he demanded his daddy BUY/hire a funny bk man he could boss around and disrespect, threaten without consequences!! It’s all SO CUTE isn’t it, just like on the Plantation…🤔 little Shirley tap dancing with Bill by her side. It was all so “well meaning, endearing and CUTE”…a comical Man-Child with very little Power, in a hard spot financially, is brought as a clown/pet/pacifier for Lonely affluent white child😞🤦🏾♀️.
@Art Vandelay What we got from the story is that kids need quality time with their Father, regardless of his income. I think US had good intentions for his son, but the abundance of wealth kept him distracted from being a GOOD FATHER. His choices weren't favorable at all. We will mention though, that there were a few instances where some "racial tension" definitely rose to the occasion. However, we see the bigger picture in this movie and it's very touching!
The only people throwing the racist card around are those looking for racism everywhere and those who haven't watched the movie. It has a very good morals to it. You got to take time for your kids, don't spoil your kids, you can't use people, you can't own people, interracial friendship, and all kinds of other good moral lessons. The only thing people focus on is the fact that this kid wanted to own a man who happened to be black. It's set up a lot of interesting interaction and opened a lot of doors for great lessons for kids both black and white. The interesting thing is also that people that talk about whitesaviors don't even think about what really happens in this movie. If you watch the movie you find out that it's actually the black man that kind of saves the child and then saves the child and his father's relationship. It's actually a very good movie and very funny.
As a child of divorce in the 80s, I LOVED this movie as a child. Thank you for the review!!!

Yes, we fully agree with you that this movie should not be remade. Thank you for your insightful comment!
Thank you for your review!
Really enjoyed your review
Thank you!
I just heard about this movie. It looked very racist. Your review made me feel better. I’m going to watch it.
Thank you for your comment! Let us know what you think about the movie after you see it.
Oh god... I knew someone had to say that
If you understood the film, it's painting the white fellow negatively

You guys missed the metaphor of this movie completely.
Why everybody throwing the racist card around? Is a great movie
Indeed. It teachers a good lesson about the importance of Fatherhood.

Let's no pretend that this movie didn't have racial undertones....The Dad has a Dixie flag in his office and the ending...???
It didn’t just have racial undertones, it had racial overtones! Yes, that movie wouldn’t come out in today’s times.
