it's fascinating to me to watch how you work out the tiny details of these projects...ramp on ladder and so on...very very clever indeed.

I would love to have a mast like you have built. 73 AE4OY William Peacock EM-81UF Blackshear, GA

Have you tried an A/B comparison between the spiderbeam and your Tribander in the background?? Tnx es 73 WA4AOS

yes I have. I think they are very close if not the same in comparison. Obviously, the KLM Kt34 has been in the air on this tower trouble free since 1990 so it is much more rugged in the elements but the spiderbeam is perfect for portable use.

did you use 3 12m masts to create the X? how long is each leg?

No... Just 4 - 5meter masts. I previously had these 4 meter masts to make their vertical loop.... I just needed to order another section to make them 16 feet long which is required to make the spiderbeam. But they were too weak...so I needed to reinforce them with fiberglass driveway markers the hardware store sells to guide snowplowing. Now they work fine. Check out last year's field day video where we used them. I am quite happy with them

I never saw a commercially made spiderbeam. I am sure they have made of good materials. I just put together something with what I had for portable FD use. I must say we are really happy with their performance. They have completely replaced the old beams I used to erect.

Spiderbeam gives you all the construction info for spacing and wire length but if you can come up with your own way of making it that is nice. www.radiomanual.info/schemi/ACC_antenna/Spiderbeam_user.pdf Sometimes you can pick up fiberglass at Hamfests in 16 foot lengths. I used spiderbeam masts that were too light so I needed to reinforce them with extra fiberglass used to mark parking lots for snow removal. I would encourage you to go slightly bigger. What I used was the 4 meter mast.. www.spiderbeam.us/product_info.php?info=p228_Spiderbeam%204m%20fiberglass%20tube.html. then ordered the next bigger section which I think was section 8 of their 12 meter mast. to make it 16 foot long overall. It would be much better to us sections 9 and 10 of the 12 meter mast....then skip the top most thin sections.
Connecting all the driven elements together with any 1 to 1 balun will feed it perfectly like any fan dipole. We just finished FD 2023 last weekend. The antenna worked great now for my 2nd year using it. 723 Q's on 20.... 15 and 10 not as good because of poor band conditions. It is such an easy antenna to throw together and get in the sky.
