Is the Canon R6 REALY better than Nikon Z6ii at focusing?

  • The Nikon Z6ii and Canon R6 are very evenly specced in most respects but the Nikon autofocus is criticised and the Canon's lauded. Is it just fanboys loving the R6 and hating on the Z6 ii or is it really than bad. A Nikon shooter takes a look

After watching your review, it looked like the Z6ii focused very well most of the time as you moved in and out of the scene outdoors. Add the bit extra megapixel at 24mp of Nikon z6ii vs. 20mp in R6 and the better out of camera color of the Nikon, shows the Nikon is a much better value. Only when you had you back to camera did Nikon miss focus a bit, while the front shot with your face moving around screen was no problem at all. Canon may have only slightly better focus but the difference is very minor in my eyes. The value of the Nikon z6ii really shines as do many of its features!

For the panning shots with the Nikon if you just use AF-C Wide Area Small you'd nail just about all the shots. The thing about the Nikon AF system is you really have to know what modes to use for what situations - if you do you can shoot just about anything.
If you are someone that just wants to put it on tracking and forget about it then the Canon has the edge for now - that should all change once the Z9 is introduced and that tech trickles down to the 3rd generation of Z cameras.

Thing is Iev owned the Z6ii since February, and had a Z6 for a year before and have tried every focus mode coupled with AF-C and its never done well and panning or cornering shots, something I do several times a week, and which is actually what prompted this test.

The main issue is the lenses zoom and focus the opposite ways which takes a lot of getting used to!
If you're already with a brand the adapters work incredibly well and the latest models like these have made huge leaps in every regard since just a year ago and make credible alternatives to DSLRs now, but the Z8/9 and R3/1 will be the big hitters later this year

Interesting comparison, thanks for putting in the time. Only thing I kinda wish is that you had the native Z mount 70-200mm when shooting the cars. I don't know how much difference it would make, but it feels a little skewed to put a native RF lens up against an adapted F mount lens.

Fair point, I couldn't get hold of a z 70-200 but from what Ive read theres not a lot in it, in fact Ken Rockwell felt the Z was slower focusing than the F. The FTZ has lenses work as is they were on an F body, so I decided it would be a fair comparison.

The best flip screen system Fuji has on its X-T2, -T3 (not the T4) and some of the GFX models, it’s like on the Z6, but you may also flip in portrait mode direction, what is a huge advantage. I do no vlogging, so I prefer the Z6/X-T3 screen flip far over the R6 or T4 one, also because of risk of damage is far less than Full flip&tilt style. If I ever start vlogging, I’ll get one of those DJI Osmo (or how it’s called, hope I spelled it correct) things…

Let’s face it, there’s no perfect camera out there, and there ‘ain’t” ever gonna be one! Nikon is a proud but arrogant Company, sometimes stuck in their ways. Canon has TOO many Bean Counters, and tries to be innovative in the strangest of ways. And Canon’s Packaging is ridiculous. All that plastic and few items, but comes in a big box. They will double wrap their Rf to Ef adapters, yet wrap a several thousand dollar camera in a thin piece of ‘foam paper!’ Asinine! You HEAR Me Canon! Great comparison Matt, thanks! Having just purchase a Z6ii, I found your video very balanced and accurate. I've shot Canon, Sony, but mostly Nikon, and I love aspects of all of them. I wasn't planning on getting a Nikon mirrorless due to all the YT negative hype, but in the end it was the best overall complete system for me. The AF is almost there, BUT it is quirky for any fluid and dynamic environments. Yesterday at a beach shot I couldn't get even the pin-point in AFS to focus where I told it to, which was odd. In general in AFC Wide/Eye, it does a phenomenal job. I personally miss terribly the vari-tilt screen of my RP. I take many vertical and odd angled perspective shots and I feel so limited without the variable screens... but understand the veritable arguments of others. Thanks again... I think if Nikon doesn't fix their AF via firmware soon, the Sony A7IV will clean house... and I will probably go Canon, though I will greatly miss Nikon's colors.

This was a second review of the Nikon Z6II they did because they found a feature in the camera that puts a frame around the subjects face and holds the tracking within that box. In their 2nd review they concluded the Nikon was as good or better than other (similar) cameras because of this feature. As for things buried in menus, the camera isn't well optimized for anyone or anything out of the box. That's part of the reason they have the "custom menu" that lets you put some things on a single screen. You also really need to configure the EVF menu. Colours; l always felt Nikon had warmer nicer colours than all the other brands till l mixed up my images in Lightroom being convinced the warmer shots were my Z but the were the R6.
Fv mode; once you really get used to the R6 Fv mode you will never use another mode except bulb.
Flip screen; a must for portrait style on tripod otherwise prefer tilt screen.
Lenses; both great lenses but the Z glass generally a lot cheaper.
Overall; after 6 months using the R6 it just smarter camera & more enjoyable to use.

If the brand is no longer working for you then yes, Ive done well buying Nikon lenses when alot of guys left for Canon years ago, but at this point when I have one body that needs upgrading already and only 3 lenses in the new eco system, its less of a big step

The standard profile video samples totally shocked me. It really was a huge surprise. Based on everything I saw online, based on my experience owning both R6, R5, Z5 and a Z7II, I would've questioned that did you probably make a mistake and put the banners reversely. In all my experience using these bodies Canon seems to always be the warmer one, more magentta and easier on the skin tones where as Nikon tends to be cooler, with a more whiter white balance. It matches reversely to what you've showed. But anyway for these two you can't go wrong with color science on neither anyway.

Nikon eye focus doesn't work with wild animals. It is bad in animal photography. I sold it for a r6

Wondering why Nikon won't add a fully rotating screen like Canon back screen. It there a copyright/patent issue? If not, Nikon will win over a lot of users if they add one to the next version of the camera in a Z6iii.

no patent that I can think of, but they were reluctant to give a folding screen at first too

Nikon has a rotating screen on my D5500 and the Zfc, so they can do it.

Honestly, I prefer the tilt screen over the fully articulated, at least for photography. Makes waist-level shooting an absolute breeze.
Now if only Nikon would make the screen also tilt in portrait mode, a la Fuji XT3.

@@jooyoonchung3593 Wang Chung Dude, you simply flip out the screen, and tilt it, not that hard! Easy to do waist level shooting. I do concur with you on tilt screen for stills, but when one needs to do any video, or vlog, the tilt/rotating screen is a bonus. Peace

The Nikon is more cropped in because it actually has a slightly smaller sensor than the Canon.

I thought that was fairly even handed, a Nikon user prepared to accept its not perfect based on real world professional use, but not believing the hype of how great Canon is or that Nikon is terrible
