R-Colored Vowel Sound / ɔr / as in "sport" - American English Pronunciation
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 лип 2024
- The /ɔr/ vowel is not as easy as it may seem. Many non-native speakers have difficulty pronouncing it, as this vowel consists of two frequently distorted sounds. The spelling of /ɔr/ doesn't help either, so this sound is often mispronounced and confused with other r-colored vowels. Compare: "arm" - "warm" or "our" - "four."
In this video, you'll learn how to make the /ɔr/ sound correctly and find out how to avoid typical pronunciation mistakes. There's a pronunciation exercise recorded by a professional speech therapist to help you practice this sound in most commonly used words.
By the way, we have a website: soundsamerican.net/

Hello there! This is the "Sounds American" channel.
In this video, we're going to talk about the American R-colored vowel /ɔr/, as in the word "sport."
You can also hear this sound in words like "four," "orange," "port," or "sword."
We'll be using special phonetic symbols - /ɔr/ - for this sound.
Let's recap what we've learned in the R-Colored Vowels Overview video:
• The /ɔr/ is one of the seven American R-colored vowel sounds.
• The /ɔr/ is an R-colored diphthong…
• ...and it's made by merging the /ɔ/ and the /r/ sounds.
• As with all R-colored vowel sounds, the /ɔr/ is often distorted by non-native English speakers.
• The spelling for /ɔr/ could be confusing as this sound is represented by several different combinations of letters.
Now, let's find out how to pronounce this R-colored vowel.
To make the /ɔr/ sound correctly, focus on pronouncing two sounds and making a smooth connection between them.
This is how you do that.
Start with making the /ɔ/ sound.
Open your mouth as wide as possible, and round your lips.
Now, let's place your tongue in the correct position for the /ɔ/ vowel.
Flatten your tongue and pull it back. Place your tongue very low in your mouth.
By the way, there are some variations in how the vowel in the /ɔr/ sound could be pronounced.
It's okay to place your tongue a little higher in your mouth and not pull it back as far, making a sound that falls somewhere in between the /oʊ/ and the /ɔ/ vowels.
For the rest of this video, we'll stick with the /ɔ/ for the sake of simplicity.
The tip of your tongue should be touching the back of your bottom front teeth.
Next, connect the /ɔ/ to the /r/ sound with a long gliding movement.
Curl back the tip of your tongue.
Now, slightly lower the center of your tongue and raise its back.
Your tongue should be tensed.
Now, let's color the /ɔ/ with the /r/ and blend the two sounds together: /ɔr/, /ɔr/, /ɔr/.
Let's talk about the most typical mistakes that people make when pronouncing the /ɔr/ sound.
1. Many non-native English speakers reduce the /r/ sound in the /ɔr/ vowel.
This would be fine in British English, but an American accent requires the /r/ to be pronounced.
So, if you reduce the /r/, your American /ɔr/ sound will be distorted and it may lead to misunderstandings.
2. Some non-native speakers trill the /r/ in the /ɔr/. Remember, that's not how Americans pronounce this sound!
Remember, Americans never trill their R-colored vowel sounds.
How do you avoid trilling? The tip of your tongue should never touch the alveolar ridge when you pronounce the R-colored sounds.
Remember, if you want to sound like an American, don't reduce the /r/ when pronouncing the R-colored vowels and avoid trilling it.

No problem!
I'm working in my pronunciation , so the Sound American help me a lot, thank you so much . I need to ask you about the how can I pronounce Science in correct way ?again I appreciate
+Saief Aldien
The word "science" is pronounced as /ˈsaɪ·əns/. In the first syllable, the letter 'c' is not pronounced after the letter 's', the 'ie' combination of letters is pronounced as the diphthong /aɪ/.
Next you can make a brief /ə/ (schwa) sound when connecting the /aɪ/ to the /n/ sound. The last sound in this word is the voiceless /s/ sound.
Hope it helps!
Thank you so much
+Saief Aldien, np! 👋

Sounds American Looking forward to it! It'll surely come in handy!
Thank you for this video. But i feel that ɔr sound when you pronounce is the same as ɔːr in British accent. Because the /ɔ/ sound you pronounced that is the same as /ɔː/ because your lip opened smaller than its reality! I look forward to reveive your reply. Thank you so much!
The application you use with the words and their sounds, is it a dictionary we can get or buy or just for coaching purposes?
We're using our own app in our videos. We haven't released it to the public yet. We're planning to do it very soon and we'll announce the release on this channel. Stay tuned!
It seemed to me that /ɔr/ is in open variety for /ɔːr/ or are they interchangeable? As for (10:11) /ɝ/ and /ɛr/ evokes dogs or bears (?) growling.
+mauro carvalho , it's basically the same phoneme, the difference is in the notation. The /ː/ indicates the long vowel which is relevant for the British English, but not for American. For American English, the tenseness is more important since the same vowel can be long or short depending on the following consonant (it's the Vowel Length rule: ua-cam.com/video/yFPbLcUCraQ/v-deo.html).
Thank you for answering me.
So the saw has the same vowel sound as in pour?
I have a doubt, what about these words /world, Word and work/ the pronunciation is / wɜrd / why it's different? Is there any rule? Or can I pronounce them both ways?
@
Kenia H The words "world," "work," and "word" are pronounced with the /ɝ/ R-Colored vowel sounds. Pronouncing them with the /ɔr/ sound would be a mistake. In English, letters don't always correspond to sounds directly. As far as the combination of letters 'or' is concerned, it can be pronounced in several ways:
/ɔr/ as in ""for""
/ɝ/ as in ""work"" - typically after 'w'
/ɝ/ as in ""attorney""
/ɚ/ as in ""doctor"" - in unstressed syllables
Unfortunately, there's no rule, but that's how this works. It's best to memorize the pronunciation of words when you practice them.
I've just noticed that the "w" in the word "sword" isn't pronounced. How did i not notice it before?
+Alex this one is sneaky, isn't it? 😀

i found out words like mature and tour in the dictionary represents vowels symbol ʊə and i have been looking for a video for this sound in the channel with no result is that here in the channel
Those are British :). In American English, "mature" is pronounced with the /ɝ/ sound, "tour" - with /ɔr/ or /ʊ+ɚ/.
@@SoundsAmerican perfect you are totally amazing
@@SoundsAmerican may be we can add hour I mean ( ʊər) to the rest of list our colored vowel sound
Do you pronounce the word sorry with this sound, or with the ah sound?
Some of us in our team are affected by the "caught-cot" merger, so they pronounce this word with the /ɑr/ sound, as /ˈsɑr·i/, the rest with the /ɔr/ sound, as in this video. Both variants are correct and commonly used. 👋
@@SoundsAmerican I pronounce words like orange and horrible with the /ɔr/ sound, and words like sorry, tomorrow and sorrow with the /ɒr/ (consider that I do have the cot-caught merger when I speak). Is that okay, or should I pronounce the words orange and horrible with the /ɒr/ sound?
Ideally, you should stick to one sound, but we don't think it'd be a problem if you use both.
This is the only sound that I couldn't pronounce correctly! It is hard to me🙁. When I pronounce it, it sounds more British rather than American even after practising many times. How to pronounce it?!
This R-Colored vowel sound is challenging for many people. The reason is that the /ɔ/ sound is made with your tongue placed very low in your mouth and pulled far back whereas the /r/ consonant is made with the tip of your tongue raised high (to the alveolar ridge). So you have to make a significant change in the tongue position. Try to practice it like this: pronounce the /ɔ/ sound, pause, and then pronounce the /r/. At first, don't try to connect them and don't try to pronounce them quickly.
Keep practicing until you feel that you can decrease the pauses between the /ɔ/ and the /r/ and pronounce them faster.
Next, try to connect the /ɔ/ to the /r/, but do it slowly, by prolonging these sounds (/ɔ-ɔ-ɔ - r-r-r/). Your goal is to make a connection between these sounds and actually feel how your tongue moves from the position of the /ɔ/ sound to the /r/.
Once you get this feeling, you'll be able to connect these two sounds into the /ɔr/ vowel :).
Hope it helps, do let us know if you have any questions. And please, keep us posted on your progress!

This is not a single sound, these are two sounds back-to-back: /i/ followed by /ə/.
@@SoundsAmerican sorry i do not understand what do you mean back to back and is there any video for this double sound
It's not a double sound. These are two sounds, /i/ followed by /ə/.
Is there -R colored vowel sound in the word -our?
I was surprised to see "forget" on the list of / ɔr / words here, it doesn't belong. This was probably meant to be "forged." (See 7:04). In fact, it's pronounced "fr - gEt."
why i think my tongue is tired after reading these words😂

Hi my name is Mihrte I'm interested your English language please let me know if you have any other suggestions l don't NO how to speak.
Hello there! Are you asking about pronunciation or just learning English as a second language? On this channel, we teach pronunciation, but we don't teach English.
Sir, isn't it a combination of oʊ and r ? because it sounds like so, not saw, right? In examples there is 'four', not 'for' , so why is it a combination of ɔ and r ? While ɔ is used in words like on, cause, all... there's a difference between....... aww and oh?
kindly help :(
No, the / oʊ/ is a different sound. The /ɔr/ starts with the low back vowel sound / ɔ /.
@@SoundsAmerican Got it thanks 👍🏼😊😊
I had an American teacher who used to pronounce /ɔr/ as /ɔər/, four /fɔər/, more /mɔər/. I don't remember where he was from but he also had a strong r Pronunciation.
Sorry, but this vowel is no longer pronounced in Western American and Canadian English, on account of the cot/caught merger. Effectively, there are no "r-colored" vowels in American Standard English, but rather, vowels followed by r's. "Orange," in Oregon, is pronounced as "ornj."
Exactly! There are NO R-colored vowels in rhotic accents.
The letter O in the word ‘ORANGE’ can be the long Oo or the short Oo depending on the syllable division.
O-rinj or or-inj
