The tsunamis in Japan in 2010 and Indian Ocean 2004 were far closer to any shore line than the Canary Islands to the USA east coast, had fault lines running deep and originating relatively off shore [ring of fire] for Japan, and both rolled up towards the respective shores where the devastation/tsunami occurred. Yes Africa and Spain affected, but you still have to take into account the direction and any immediate ocean streams/currents such as the canaries and north Atlantic Drift, fall off from the island itself and certainly on its' possible but NOT probable movement towards North America, you have to consider the effect of the deep abyss/trench, Gulf Stream, any and all storm formation and storm propagation/directions. NO not bloody likely that a Tsunami will originate and propagate across the entire Atlantic and swamp NYNY and/or Miami. For those of you that have a nice swimming pool maybe one that slopes down towards the center with the deep end in the middle, throw a golf ball as hard as you can into the shallow corner of the pool [not minding the liner or pool floor] and measure how high the pool water level rises at the opposite end. Try it with a kiddy pool even ... NOPE, why? deep sustained seismic action is required, much like a giant wave machine, and not on the other side of the Ocean. Math is a great tool, but you have to include a complete model when slamming together a bunch of numbers. You have to consider EVERYTHING!! I've always been a little surprised it hadn't happened sooner I recall the documentaries in the 70s and followed it closely over the decades. Where the last 10 years I've been warning people only to receive blank looks and a shrug. So how many people think the East Coast could evacuate in 8 hours. And that's if they warned in a timely fashion, if at all. My thoughts now as they have been, they will want to be ahead of everyone trying to get what government and Military infrastructure they can out. They can't do that with clogged highways. Anyone on the East Coast sees all the Navy moving what they can out to sea. Or convoys of government vehicles heading west or to high mountains, it's time to bug out warned or not. There's always deniers ........but how does that workout.

This is why after the Tsunami of 2004 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005 many countries started buying and installing tsunami alarms and evacuation signs. There is an evacuation sign in the town next to me because I live about 3 towns away from the sea so if a major hurricane or tsunami were to happen then all of the people of that seaside town would have to evacuate towards our town.
If the tsunami comes towards you just remember to wear your masks and stay 6ft apart as you’re getting thrown around by the water. Remember safety first!😷

Praying for the safety of everyone 🙏 I’m not sure how far away from the coast would be deemed safe for Maine so I’m trying to just stay updated and ready to move my family and pets to seek higher elevation if need be.
I read that here on the eastcoast a 100 foot wave would travel inland for 20 miles. It would have been HUGE over there however, maybe 10x higher at source. I also read that FL would be under water all the way to Tallahassee. Based on stuff I've read in general, the first one seems most accurate.
Any country/state/province in the danger zone, will be inundated, if it's at or below sea level. That's really bad news for places like Florida, which is where I live. :( The key to survival, is get to high ground!
This would be terrifying if this happens in my lifetime, I live in Portsmouth (pop 225,000) on the south central coast of England, for a city averaging only 9 feet above sea level, it would essentially destroy most of the infrastructure there, but giving the fact that Britain had a tsunami warning system installed in 2012, we might get some information a couple of hours before the waves arrive to see what height they would be, but 10-20+ metre high waves is devastating on any coast line in the world let alone southern England! 😯
Depends on how far you have to go to get to High Ground if that High Ground is close to the Shoreline the water will rise up the side much further than the wave height was. There is a simulation of what happened in the landslide in Alaska in 59. Don't know much about your coastlines but in the US we have nuclear plants lining them. If you have similar the jet stream will carry that radiation right over you. Now would be the time to get your potassium iodine. And don't forget infrastructure like shipping ports and others will be totally wasted. Not to mention the tens of millions of people that will likely die. Hopefully most will get there evacuation route in order and put away supplies if they live on the coast they should think about renting a storage unit further inland to stock up with food and clothes since they'll be nothing left to return to at least they won't be dependent on a government system that no longer exists. Besides this simulation there are many documentaries going back to the 70s unfortunately UA-cam decided to scrub most of them this last week.

TRUTH The basic research which was done is correct. That is not in dispute. There is a fault, some movement has been detected and there is a volcano which will probably erupt again. BUT ..... 1. The existing fault is only 4km long, but it was extrapolated to 25km for the computer model. Worse still, the position of the fault line was ignored for the model and a fictitious line on the other side of the mountain ridge was used instead, 2 to 3km further away!. 2. The rock on La Palma is a mixture of very porous lava and well faulted and open basaltic layers which will not permit a build up of (steam) pressure. 3. There is an old deep-seated volcanic core between part of the fictitious fault and the sea. This will block the proposed landslide along part of its length. 4. The base of the proposed structure which is supposed to slide is placed at 2km under the surface ... there is no evidence to support this. There is evidence to indicate that previous landslides have been superficial and not deep-seated. 5. There is strong evidence from reliable expert sources that any landslide will not occur in one massive collapse. 6. There is no evidence to support the theory that any catastrophic landslide would attain the extremely high speeds needed to crate a Tsunami. 7. The computer model was based on algorithms used for under sea linear earthquakes. This algorithm is not relevant to the La Palma situation because a La Palma landslide would cause a 'single point event' which would disperse quickly. 8. There is strong evidence to suggest that previous landslide generated Tsunami were very short lived and dissipate within a few hundred kilometres. Some were not even noticed at a distance to 25km

Lachlan Lewis Thank you for recognizing the validity of my post. On this issue of whether or not the La Palma landslide/tsunami threat is real rests on the physical geological make-up of the island. I don't understand where the information about the structure formation of the island originated from, but it seems to be a fictional scenario. As to WHY they are pushing the story, I'm even more at a loss. This has seriously affected the tourist contributions to the economy in the Canary Islands. It would seem to me the legal representatives of the islands could and SHOULD sue for their losses. There is more pertinent information available online that could contribute to the wisdom behind the situation. LL, I am glad you appreciate the post for what is is worth: the factual truth It is sad to see so many brainless posts all over the internet, particularly on UA-cam about other issues all over the world. @@robcox8220 hello form the future, we are experiencing a rise of earthquakes on la Palma, which suggest that a volcano could be incoming, not that it will cause the island to break, but just so you know it c:
Even a tsumani surge of only 30 meters would be disastrous for Miami in Florida (Florida being basically an ancient shallow seafloor plane that has been exposed to air thanks to slightly lowered worldwide sea levels, so a 30 m tsunami will get as far as 12.5 miles inland with no ridges or sharp changes in elevation to blunt it) and New York City. Particularly Manhattan in New York, given the whole island and surrounding Burroughs are less than 30 meters above sea level. You'd see every skyscraper in that city get swamped with water up to the 5th floor.
What about New Jersey ,would all of NJ be gone ? Sorry to even ask but this is extremely worrisome. I never saw this till now and had no idea , something like this could even happen.
No problem guys, if you live near La Palma when the tsunami hits, just make sure you're in a boat. If you're in southern UK, wear swimming trunks. If you're in the US, build a wall and get Spain to pay for it.
It's not fake. Look it up. There is a lot of history on that problem. With the latest Earthquakes in the area, this could cause a huge problem for the globe.
Add 2018: The ground that previously already moved downwards is on the move again, huge fissures are seen now on the top ridge and to add more to the concern, this time it also involves the western and southern part of the volcano, so this slide will be way bigger then shown here with the info known back then. And as it seems, it may not even take 10 more years for it to happen.
Very true I feel a little Vindicated after all the blank stares and shrugs I've had over the decades. Earthquakes and volcanic activity are not only on the rise but pressure is building expect a series of extremely large Global Quakes to start happening within the next year too. And biblically Cumbre Vieja is the second Trump in the Bible. Revelations 8 :8 first Trump is large hail, fire and brimstone hail around the world is on the increase as well as the size. And much of the world is experiencing much of the land being consumed by fire. Brimstone is sulfur it can be found in the interior of the Earth. But it's also found in Stony meteorites. We have a large Stony meteorites cluster that is approaching Earth in the last week we've had several extremely large meteors just miss. There's likely some that have hit that we haven't heard about, especially if they hit in the oceans which course this planet mostly is. so on that event happens and you will know for sure that it has or is. Expect Cumbre Vieja to go next. Then the global earthquakes 8-9 possibly higher.
But how far inland would this tsunami go? We had a 10+meter double tidal wave hit southern Rhode Island in the Hurricane of 1938 and it killed about 400 people and demolished the immediate coastline but just 1/2 mile away there was no affect from the tidal waves. There have been claims that a 30 + meter tsunami would basically wash over all or RI and we've have to make it to Hartford, CT (50 miles inland) to be safe but is that true, I doubt it.
If you're in this Tsunami's trajectory, your only hope is that the mountain collapses in small chunks instead of one giant chunk crashing into the ocean. Thankfully that's what most experts are expecting to happen. It usually breaks apart in stages. So that would mean 3-4 small tsunamis (20-30m waves) instead of 1 mega tsunami with 100-200+ meter waves. Then again experts are wrong sometimes so yeah no one can really know for sure how large the waves will be or if it will happen at all.
Has anyone else found that Simpson’s clip a little unsettling? Where it shows the island missing a chunk exactly where the volcano is? Kinda strange considering that’s almost exactly how we see the island represented here after the slide occurs.......
Yeah that was strange also tenerife also had area missing which at the moment looks very possible. A square area to north which lies low currently so would be washed out look closer at that one
@@gardndeman6513 I really appreciate people being willingly to discuss these things. Hey, is there any possibility for you to analize the propagation of this tsunami across the Amazonas River? Would the 40m waves follow the massive water body of rivers through the Brazilian north coast? Where can this tsunami reach? Thank you for your amazing job!
To understand tsunamis you have to understand waves. We did water tank wave experiments in physics at school in the early 1980’s. The word is refraction. Out in deep sea the waves may just bob a boat up and down a few inches but as they near land the sea generally becomes shallower so the wave refracts larger, similarly if the wave enters a bay the sea becomes narrower so again the wave refracts larger.
Don't be alarmed yet! Even if it hits the coastline of USA would only be about 30 feet, which is too much, but there won't be a 100 ft wave. The people on u tube who fear monger, should be booted off of here.
Where are you Dr. Steven Ward - the media is trashing your original study and subsequently your reputation. Many of us would love to hear your rebuttal/current event opinion. What is your professional assessment of the events occurring now in La Palma and should those of us that like to err on the side of caution find a way to leave the east coast for maybe the next couple of weeks?
Later estimates have questioned the assumptions made by Ward and Day 2001, mainly with regards to the following:[109] The authors employed a linear tsunami model that may not properly reflect non-linear processes such as wave breaking that could reduce the height of the resulting tsunami by a factor of about 10.[110][7] Wave dispersion might also act to reduce tsunami height since the wave induced by the Ward and Day 2001 landslide behaves as an intermediate-water depth wave.[111] The estimated speed and acceleration of the landslide may be unrealistically high for the slopes it would move on, and thus inadequate to establish effective coupling between the tsunami and the landslide.[112] Later research has found evidence that sufficient speeds have been reached during collapses at other volcanoes.[113] The landslide modelled by Ward and Day 2001 may be implausibly thick given the known volumes of Canary Islands mega-landslides, and collapses may have occurred in multiple steps rather than a single failure[114][7] or may have a smaller volume.[115] The thickness of the landslide is a particular issue, as different estimates have been obtained at various volcanoes.[116] Another issue is whether giant landslides occur as a single step failure (as argued for Hawaiian giant landslides) or multistage failures (as appears to be more common in the Canary Islands)[117] and stacking in turbidite deposits generated by landslides are a reliable indicator that these landslides occurred in piecemeal fashion.[118] In general, many of these studies have found lower wave heights at distance than the original Ward and Day 2001 paper.[119] There are also questions about the southern limit of the width of the unstable zone,[120] about whether creep might stabilize it[121] and about whether it actually exists at all.[122]

But, as it travels down the English Channel from west to east, the channel progressively narrows, therefore the waves will get a lot higher with the same amount of wave force behind them? 50m at Cornmall and 150m at Folkestone/Dover?
The channel also gets increasingly shallow, increasing wave drag massively and slowing the tsunami incoming speed to more of a massive inrushing tide than a wall of water

Florida will go under! Anybody on the coast should think about heading inland! When it goes you only have 7 to 9 hours & it will be like rush hour traffic on the roads! Everybody will be trying to get out at the last minute & there will be traffic jams & chaos
Florida is the flatland then it will be half flooded or flooded completely. This is the peninsula so there is the unique way out (the North) to leave it then there will be traffic jams. The flight is a sure way to escape. The mexican cost is less dangerous than atlantic. So take a big ship there and go to the open sea. The tall* condominiums, the skyscrapers out of the seaside will not be flooded except the low floors. Tall* - more than 5 floors.
30 meters - 100 foot wave to hit the eastern seaboard. Wave that size and the speed will make it go as far as 10-15 miles since the land is flat coastal plain.

The bright side is that this was studied extensively and determined that failures happen in many small pieces over time, instead of a single large event. So tsunami risk is minimal.
@@lhaviland8602 There is proof of much, much larger slides from Hawaii (e.g. Nu’uanu Slide), and there is some chance, however remote, of an extreme collapse event (~500 cubic km) at La Palma. However, the return period on such events and their overall prevalence in the record, especially as studied in the Canaries, is so minimal as to be meaningless from a public policy perspective, beyond continuing to simply monitor them and study and model flank collapses. It’s like with flooding and public safety-You plan for a 100-year flood, or even a 1000-year flood, but not the 10,000-plus-year flood (and the extreme 500 cubic km event at La Palma is more like a 500,000-year flood). And when the big collapses occur, the sedimentary record shows they occur in multistage fashion, not all in one large single event. Beyond the multistage nature of the landslide and its instantaneous size, the viscosity/rheology, which controls the speed, of the landslide, is critical as well-the less viscous, the faster they displace water, and the bigger the resulting wave. So even it’s not even enough to say that it could occur just as a result of its large size. Smaller flank collapses in the 20-80 cubic km range are quite possible in the next several centuries, and these smaller events should and are being planned for. This theory has been soundly debunked by scientists from many different fields over the past decade. Will a landslide occur someday due to a volcanic eruption on La Palma ? Yes it will. It will be bad for any of the (nearby) islands. However, a landslide triggered tsunami expends roughly 90% of its energy upon entering the water. That energy does cause high wave within the local area, but that energy is rapidly dissipated. The wave that is initially created may be very high, but it will lose both height and power before it travels very far. You see even large undersea landslides are still limited by the initial size of the mass wasting event (landslide). Even one as large as the La Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma is predicted to create will dissipate rapidly after first sending wave of tremendous height. England will not be seeing waves devastating its coastline and neither will the East Coast of the United States. You see a tsunami that is generated by a landslide has a very small center of propagation which translates into a flashy beginning, but in using up the majority of its energy at the point of entry into the water, the waves that spread out from the point of impact just don’t go very far and when and if they do arrive on foreign shores a thousand miles away, they simply don’t pack the same punch that they did when they were first created. It takes a massive earthquake with the ocean floor rising up by 10 to 20 meters or more to spawn a killer tsunami. The Boxing Day quake that created a massive wave that crossed entire oceans and yet retained enough power to destroy entire communities and kill more than 250,000 people was caused by a portion of the ocean floor suddenly rising up by tens of meters. The wave had the power and speed to cross oceans and still cause horrific destruction because it was created by a crack in the ocean floor rising up by 10 to 20 meters. That crack was more than a thousand kilometers in length. The wave has the power to cross oceans and still be dangerous because it has all the power created by a thousand mile long piece of seafloor forcing the water up. That kind of power does not dissipate very quickly and people in the path of such a series of waves should seek higher ground and wait for the official all clear. Will the La Cumbre Vieja volcano cause such a wave ? No, and I won’t loose any sleep thinking about what the tabloids and crackpots cook up for publicity purposes. Neither should you.
The 2004 Tsunami was so deadly because it took everyone near the epicenter by surprise in the form of minutes from the initial earthquake, to the Tsunami itself. Had it occured farther out with everyone given the proper warning, the amount of casualties that would've been drastically lower.
@@tropeller9535 Well thing is they didn't have a warning system in place, that only came up after the tsunami. Even if there was a warning system, it wouldn't have helped that much for Indonesia being closest to the fault. Also, between the main fault and the mainland of Indonesia, theres a smaller fault. When the main fault broke, it ruptured as well, producing 3 massive 30 meter waves that reached the coast in just 10 minutes. No warning system could have helped with that.
The fault itself is way longer than that. The length of it is nearly 6,000 kilometers, from Northern Australia to Myanmar. In 2004 about 1,500 kilometers of it ruptured, parts moved upward by 15 to 20 meters. The waves spread across the entire planet. Even here in Luderitz, Namibia where I'm staying the waves reached up to 1 meter in height in the bay next to our town. It's about 10 kilometers in length, 2 to 3 in width and near the entrance up to 70 meters in depth. When the waves reached us the were half a meter at the entrance of the bay, once they reached the other end they were about 1 meter in height. Doesn't sound like much but it was enough for them them to flow 2 kilometers inland. At the bottom of the bay there's a flat salt pan that extends 2 kilometers from the shore, there's also a road that goes around the whole pan. The waves not only reached that road but also went over it and flowed another 50 to be 00 meters beyond it.

LOL you know that's kind of what I figured. The ocean massive compared to the plunging land mass. But wasn't sure if somehow the waves amplified over distance or something. Thanks for putting my mind at ease.
If the land is a flat coastal plain, it'll go far. If the coast is a hill and high enough, it won't go far at all except up any river and creeks that flow into the sea.
I saw a special about tsunamis right after the one that hit Malaysia and one part of it talked and showed La Palma volcano and what will happen at first before the tsunami hits the coast is the significant drop and retreating water going way out leaving hundreds or thousands of feet of beach that's been under water exposed. Then in just minutes the very high and huge wall of water of at least 100 feet in height comes in at high speed.

They said 'You give us money, we'll give you a scare story!' The La Palma 'megatsunami,' was born! The facts are very very different! In 1936 precursors seismic activity was felt by a group of people on the rim if the Caldera de Taburiente. There was no - and never was, any seismic recording devices on the island, nor any of the other islands in the archipelago! Over the next 13 years seismic activity was felt at various locations on La Palma, and Franco's Government did nothing. At about 09:00 on 24th June, 1949; the feast of St John (San Juan), a shepherd heard noises emanating from the vent of the Duraznero. Then stones and rocks were expelled, followed by the stench of Sulphur. Thinking the devil was about to manifest himself, he fled the scene! On 1st and 2nd July two strong earthquakes occurred and damaged buildings, the hypercentre / epicentre was later calculated to be about 1 km north of the township of Jedey. When geologists visited the summit of the Cumbre Vieja, they discovered a series of cracks - most are covered by subsequent ashfall. The longest stretched from the Hoyo Negro (Black Hole), vent in a northwesterly direction for approximately 1500 metres or 1.5 kilometres. In the report of one of the geologists - Juan Bonelli-Rubio, '... No fumes, ashes, stones, lava or heat was being emitted from the crack ...', his field notes also recorded the dimensions of the crack, and those dimensions are exactly the same at the present time as in 1949. On 6th July the activity at the Duraznero vent ceased, and only fumes - steam, sulphur gases etc; were emitted. Then! On 8th July lava reached the surface in the Llano del Banco and flowed down the barranco towards the ocean. It entered the ocean on 10th July. On 12th July phreatomagmatic explosions occurred at the Hoyo Negro vent. These eroded the vent widening it and causing the western rim to become lower than the eastern edge, which also underwent slumping, giving the impression of faulting. On 22nd July, the Hoyo Negro ceased activity and thereafter degassing only occurred. The Llano del Banco ceased emitting lava on 26th July. Activity resumed at the Duraznero vent on 30th July with fire fountains, lava flowed in to the adjacent crater of El Fraile, overflowed, and then flowed down the barranco towards the east coast. It failed to reach the ocean by a few tens of metres! Then all eruptive activity ceased and thereafter only fumarolic activity and thermal release continued. The Cumbre Vieja is about 25 km long, the 1949 rack is about 1.5 km, and from the Duraznero vent to the Llano del Banco is about 4km. Even during the pre, syn, and post 2021 eruption no movement was detected on the Cumbre Vieja let alone the 1949 crack. The Cumbre Vieja increases in altitude at about 1.6 mm per year. It is estimated that it will become potentially unstable in about 10000 years, studies at Eindhoven University indicate. Meaning no-one alive now will witness it, the insurance company's will have long disappeared and as for the policies turned to dust or destroyed! When one of the authors of the claim was contacted he admitted he had never read the work by Juan Bonelli-Rubio, had no idea where to obtain a copy and could not read Spanish. Yet the media bought the scare story and idiots believe it! I have a copy of Bonelli-Rubio's work and a lot more information. In the mean time, enjoy the animation, put your feet up and relax, because it sure as eggs is eggs is mot going to happen anytime soon!
The logic that It cannot happen naturally is strong… but can it be initiated artificially, with someone’s help. With a mean of a powerfull explosion used as a trigger, for example? Thank you.
Is this code for, yes go sell your coastal condominium, since in the video it says this will not happen anytime soon, don't rush to sell your coastal condominium?

A very wise and prosperous Engineer once told me that you can meet a lot of smart people at Universities, and in fact some of them are so smart that they are stup......

I read that here on the eastcoast a 100 foot wave would travel inland for 20 miles. It would have been HUGE over there however, maybe 10x higher at source. I also read that FL would be under water all the way to Tallahassee. Based on stuff I've read in general, the first one seems most accurate.

Funny how they show water going "around" Florida instead of completely covering it.
Think it would take all of florida out?
This would be terrifying if this happens in my lifetime, I live in Portsmouth (pop 225,000) on the south central coast of England, for a city averaging only 9 feet above sea level, it would essentially destroy most of the infrastructure there, but giving the fact that Britain had a tsunami warning system installed in 2012, we might get some information a couple of hours before the waves arrive to see what height they would be, but 10-20+ metre high waves is devastating on any coast line in the world let alone southern England! 😯
You wouldn't have to worry too much. People would have reported tsunami's in Africa, Iberia and France before it reaches you.

TRUTH
The basic research which was done is correct.

The ground that previously already moved downwards is on the move again, huge fissures are seen now on the top ridge and to add more to the concern, this time it also involves the western and southern part of the volcano, so this slide will be way bigger then shown here with the info known back then.
That’s what I’m wondering, I’ve heard we’d have to go 15-20 miles inland. That’s what different people have said recently.

Holly crap, and this video is already nine years old!
... Now the volcano just broke out!
Hey, is there any possibility for you to analize the propagation of this tsunami across the Amazonas River? Would the 40m waves follow the massive water body of rivers through the Brazilian north coast? Where can this tsunami reach?
Thank you for your amazing job!
Just came back here because La Palma is all over the news with yellow alert for volcanic activity.
It just erupted ‼️ let’s pray 🙏 nothing bad happens
Who's here after seeing La Palma series ----------->
To understand tsunamis you have to understand waves. We did water tank wave experiments in physics at school in the early 1980’s. The word is refraction. Out in deep sea the waves may just bob a boat up and down a few inches but as they near land the sea generally becomes shallower so the wave refracts larger, similarly if the wave enters a bay the sea becomes narrower so again the wave refracts larger.
Came here because of what is going on now & I'm now aware of how serious this is. Wow!
Don't be alarmed yet! Even if it hits the coastline of USA would only be about 30 feet, which is too much, but there won't be a 100 ft wave. The people on u tube who fear monger, should be booted off of here.
@@jmsimmons3374 uh
Have you allowed for lessening density factors on dissipation at extremities, depth, temperature ?.
I would!
Who is here on Sep 2021?
2:10 so you've preventively inundated the Netherlands before the waves even reach us. Gee, thanks 🤣
2012- "on the bright side, there is no evidence that this will happen anytime soon"
2021-🌋"hold my beer" 🌋
It ain't funny
Well ...looks like this is a “right now” possibility... November 2021
It would be very 2021 to have this happen
Wait.... Not much, if any, of Florida is more than 30M ASL. Does that mean that the run-up calculation inundates FL entirely?
yeah i'm asking same thing 300 earthquakes in last couple days right on beach in Ft Lauderdale
300 earthquakes around Canary Islands
And again
Volcano now erupted. Not good for someone living on the coast as myself.
Later estimates have questioned the assumptions made by Ward and Day 2001, mainly with regards to the following:[109]
The authors employed a linear tsunami model that may not properly reflect non-linear processes such as wave breaking that could reduce the height of the resulting tsunami by a factor of about 10.[110][7] Wave dispersion might also act to reduce tsunami height since the wave induced by the Ward and Day 2001 landslide behaves as an intermediate-water depth wave.[111]
The estimated speed and acceleration of the landslide may be unrealistically high for the slopes it would move on, and thus inadequate to establish effective coupling between the tsunami and the landslide.[112] Later research has found evidence that sufficient speeds have been reached during collapses at other volcanoes.[113]
The landslide modelled by Ward and Day 2001 may be implausibly thick given the known volumes of Canary Islands mega-landslides, and collapses may have occurred in multiple steps rather than a single failure[114][7] or may have a smaller volume.[115] The thickness of the landslide is a particular issue, as different estimates have been obtained at various volcanoes.[116] Another issue is whether giant landslides occur as a single step failure (as argued for Hawaiian giant landslides) or multistage failures (as appears to be more common in the Canary Islands)[117] and stacking in turbidite deposits generated by landslides are a reliable indicator that these landslides occurred in piecemeal fashion.[118]
In general, many of these studies have found lower wave heights at distance than the original Ward and Day 2001 paper.[119] There are also questions about the southern limit of the width of the unstable zone,[120] about whether creep might stabilize it[121] and about whether it actually exists at all.[122]
Según la comunidad científica que sigue actualmente la erupción del cumbre vieja, esto es bastante improbable ¿cual es su opinión actualmente? Gracias
Odds have changed dramatically on this one chief
Definitely!! It would be nice to see an update on the situation from them ..... it’s most certainly NOT going to be centuries now!
how far inland would that wave travel?...

I can't believe this is about to happen, God bless humankind
God be with us all.
How's it going, past?
But, as it travels down the English Channel from west to east, the channel progressively narrows, therefore the waves will get a lot higher with the same amount of wave force behind them? 50m at Cornmall and 150m at Folkestone/Dover?
The channel also gets increasingly shallow, increasing wave drag massively and slowing the tsunami incoming speed to more of a massive inrushing tide than a wall of water
If this where to happen would people on the canaries have time to evacuate and the other Islands my mum lives on fuerteventura and I'm so worried for her coz you could only evacuate by air by the sound of it
How much of Florida would be affected by this? Just the east coast or all of it.
I heard if this thing fractures in half all of Florida would be hit w the tsunami
Does this take into consideration variations in continental shelf profile? If not, its speculative only.
"On the bright side there is no evidence this will happen soon"
You sure about that ?
Well. The video says the isle would literally fall apart, not that a volcano erupting would do this.
30 meters - 100 foot wave to hit the eastern seaboard. Wave that size and the speed will make it go as far as 10-15 miles since the land is flat coastal plain.
It's an uneducated guess...
Looks like this animation is about to be tested.....God Bless U S All!
Yeah, really hope the US survives the 20-30meter waves, while some other parts of the globe get 100m plus! God bless the USA 🤦♂️
God bless U.S.A ? Fooka usa god bless in the word egoístas do caralho !
If that happens the UK will have 50 foot waves from Portsmouth to edge of Margate..in kent
Check it out..Do the research..
Greetings. I would like to know who made this fantastic simulation? Is it published?
Ward & Day, 2001 is the paper providing the data for this worst-case sim
I have it on good authority that archeologists made a mistake in translating Mayan inscriptions, transposing the last two digits. The apocalypse will happen in December 2021, not 2012.
Sorry for the late notice.

What are the odds,, am I right?
The bright side is that this was studied extensively and determined that failures happen in many small pieces over time, instead of a single large event. So tsunami risk is minimal.

It will happen
@@yerasmus4025 wrong
Except there is ample proof re: Fogo.

What about the moroccan and iberian costlines? I think they will be devastated anyway
Well, I bet they love you at parties.

Very useful video. Thank you for making this.
on the september 19th 2021 the first eruption of la palma volcano in the canary island chain in 50 years has begin. it start in a large explosion soon lava spewing out to the surface and move into hawaiian style eruption. later at night a strombolian style eruption. later lava moving to the down hill forming an a'a lava flow but lucky enough the a'a flow was pretty slow so resident cant even evacuate fast.and hundreds of homes are being destroyed by the a'a flow.that day that idk a spatter cone began to more explosive forming a strombolian style eruption
and btw pretty legit good news:the island is not colapse cuz its not producing some rift zone crack

9 years in geological terms is like the video saying this won't happen anytime soon, the
a half second late it happens.
What would happen to Massachusetts? Like if you live about 2 hours off the coast on the border of new Hampshire and Massachusetts? I'm nervous 😅
If you live more than 10-15 miles off the coast, you'd be fine. Well sort off. I mean as far as a tsunami could go anyways.
John Deer I live in southeastern Massachusetts, about 5 miles inland. With 8 hours notice I could easily walk another 5 miles inland. Though we'd probably be waiting for my wife to get ready, so there's a few hours off the top. :)
A couple geologists seeking finance for a 'research' project approached an insurance company in the land where common sense does not exist!
