Have to add an addendum to #3&4 (thermostat) as I had this problem this week on a no heat call myself. Customer said they turned thermostat switch to "HEAT", and no heat. Upon arrival I looked at it and the switch was in fact on heat. However, on closer inspection, I noticed the display still showed "COOL". I flipped the switch to "OFF" then back to "HEAT". The display then showed HEAT. Problem solved, at least for now. I didn't replace the thermostat but suggested to them that if it happened again that I would advise having it replaced as the switch contact may be bad. And as you say, simple solutions are the best solutions! As always, enjoy your videos Jay. Keep up the good work!
You the man jay! I watched you 6 years ago in trade school. I have worked residential and commercial and now I am an instructor at the very school that made me! I love you man!

Another great list of things to check on a major appliance to troubleshoot for problems before calling a Repairman. I saved this to refer to should I ever need it, instead of writing all the steps out. Thx for filming this.
Thank you ! Another easy thing to check is the inflow air and outflow exhaust pipes to be sure they are now blocked ( snow, insects, etc.). My neighbor's AC would not go on. Company came and pronounced the thermostat bad. I lent him an extra thermostat, known good, and still no AC. I went to circuit board and tested the 3A fuse- blown. What happened was their painter did not protect the wiring at the thermostat ( or shut off the power at furnace) and it probably shorted the circuit. 10 seconds later: AC.
Nice video - thanks. On the two gas furnaces we have had the flame sensor failed - must be pretty common? I was able to fix it by cleaning with steelwool until I could replace with new.
That is the most common furnace problem. A dirty flame sensor. It's literally just a steel rod so cleaning it is enough, no need to replace unless you simply prefer to have a new one. If you're interested at all, watch this video and you will learn more about the flame sensor/how it actually works than you ever wanted to 😄: ua-cam.com/video/-QKHz1Mv9Ew/v-deo.htmlsi=Jsf2fverkNuNJmIQ
Jay!! Long time my friend! So happy to see your channel doing well and growing. Hope you and your family are well! Congrats on the UEI partnership. I love their equipment and plan to use them (and recommend them highly to friends / coworkers) exclusively now given your backing of their products. Take care and thanks again for the GREAT information!
Hey bro!! Long time no see. Hopefully you and yours are doing well on your side of the world. Thank you, family and I are doing great! Recently had our 2nd son. I am actually not in an official partnership with UEi but I do enjoy their products! I asked them to send me a multimeter for my recent multimeter tutorial video and they sent me a hat and sticker along with it. I like the hat so I wear it around. Glad to hear you are loving their equipment too and I'm sure they would love you for promoting their tools. 😄 Glad you like the videos, take care my friend!! P.S. Just emailed UEi and asked them about a more serious partnership. Thank you for your comment, it prompted me to do so.
I’m sure that there will be a lot fewer cold people this winter thanks to this video. We will probably also see a spike in multimeter sales😂. All of Jay’s DIY videos are a great way for someone to get into the game WITHOUT getting in over their heads. I still remember the first one I watched on sequence of operation . It was priceless. Keep up the great work, Jay
Thank you sir!! I appreciate the positive evaluation of the channel and am happy to be able to help many folks fix their own appliances/hvac! I appreciate you stopping by for the new video, may you have an amazing rest of the week! God bless you and yours!
I have a question for you. I know you have to turn the power off, but is it necessary to turn off the gas when cleaning the burners? I appreciate your response. Thanks again for the informative videos.
A quick check between R and C will eliminate most of the early checks... plus it's safe because you're working on the low voltage side. Finding 24V between R and C with a meter set to voltage means breaker, customer switch, door switch (including all wiring) and transformer are OK. Call for heat and the flash code if present will direct you to the fault. If you don't get 24V between R and C you will need to check all the stuff in the first few checks.
Yes! You effectively made this process 10 times easier. 😄 Thank you for explaining. I think it was still good that I showed each individual piece but doing it the way you suggested is way more efficient.
@@WordofAdviceTV nothing wrong with being methodical and you were very good at doing that. For an educational video your explanation is more thorough and might be necessary if things aren't playing nicely. My quick check was how I explained troubleshooting to my students but only after they got the whole lesson as you explained.
Just a word of advice, a breaker doesn't trip for no reason. If the breaker is actually tripped, I'd open up the furnace and check all the wires before resetting. 🙂
For reason #7 & above, simply call Jay and he will take care of it 👍. I agree the door switch design makes ZERO sense and should be permanently taped. As always, you are an amazing educator & inspiration 💯
Hi Jay, I hope you’re doing well and I am not going to bore you but I’ve had a rough week last week because my pet bird passed away and the week before that happened my passed away his funeral is today. I am doing a lot better now but I went through 4 days of depression and it was not fun. Awesome video I wonder if you could a video where you do the same video except it’s for an electric furnace. Take care.
Aloha my friend! Sorry to hear about the pet bird. We just got two parakeets for my son and we had a quaker parrot before so I know it doesn't take long to get attached to them... May you have the strength, peace, and support to endure this hard season in your life. God bless you and yours! I currently live in Hawaii and I have yet to see an electric furnace here. I would love to make the video that you suggested but it will probably have to be done some time in the future.
If you look at the back of your furnace door, there should be a label that lists what all the error codes mean. On top of that list it should explain what a blinking red light signifies. It could mean a few different things depending on the brand of your furnace. It could mean normal operation, furnace is in standby mode, soft lockout, or a safety switch is tripped.
Good morning on my furnace I'm making it all the way to the pilot light lighting up but after that it shuts off and my light on my computer does not flash nor does it stay on. And my flame sensor is new . Do you have any advice for me. Please and thank you
I’m struggling to get heat & a/c on a Carrier infinity unit that was recently worked on, at an $800 expense. Can you help with some wiring questions, I’ll scape some $ together if I can’t talk to someone to see where the last guy changed wires.
This usually means that you either have a bad breaker or there is short somewhere. To begin with it would be good to narrow down where the short is. I would start by turning the breaker off (and verify that it is off with a multimeter or voltage detector) and then disconnect the power wires going into the furnace. Make sure the disconnected wires are not touching any metal and turn the breaker back on. If it still trips, then you know the problem has nothing to do with the furnace. If it doesn't trip, then you know that the furnace is shorting out somewhere inside the unit.
i had the switch off problem on a water heater I put in. this woman's kids were standing around in basement watching me put in water heater they didn't speak English. so, after I left, they thought water heater was new toy for them next day i get call no hot water the kids turned knob to off on water heater had to get interpreter to tell mother to keep kids away from water heater and out of basement.
Furnace won't kick on... If I turn the breaker off/on it turns on and heats up the home. But, then it will not kick back on unless I turn off the breaker and then turn ot back on. Manually repeat to keep the house warm.
@Samlol23_drrich 😄😄 I always get a kick out of your witty comments lol. I erroneously assumed that it is common sense that if the breaker trips again after being reset, then you know you have a problem and it's not just a nuisance trip. @scpatl4now I should have talked more about this in the video but I appreciate that you at least brought it up in the comments, thank you!

I'd say if your furnace is tripping the breaker...you have a bigger problem than the furnace just not turning on
I usually just reset my breaker every five minutes or so until my house is warm. Is that a problem?
