If you have tearaway embroidery stabilizer you can cut your leftovers into strips and use that, too. It tears away even more easily than paper.

I keep me a stack of tissue paper at my sewing machine it really does work. And it works on knit fabrics oh so well

Good thing I saw this before I tried going back to what I'm working on. It already looked like I wasn't gonna have enough satin for what I wanted, so I can't afford to lose what I have to impatience.

You can also turn your feed dogs off or cover them if your machine can’t turn them off. I turn my stitches down too when I use delicate fabrics or large weaves. It’s such a pain.
That's an idea! 😊 Can you still do even stitches with your feet dogs off?
@@LydiaNaomi yeah I just sew slower. In general with delicate fabrics I sew a lot slower or use the paper method with the feed dogs up. If you ever sew with the feed dogs down, try some scrap cloth and use your left hand to pull from the back side. You’ll get the feel for it but it’s different on different fabric. My sewing machine chews up satin if I don’t put them down, use a stabilizer or paper.

This is great! Off topic but how do you freehand cut with a Rotary blade? When I try I sometimes cut into the pattern piece/fabric!
A straight stitch plate is also effective if you have one and plan to use only a straight stitch.

Great tips I used for many years.
So perhaps ppl can make note use a microtex or sharps needle size 70-80 or size 10 a small needle as well and most ppl didn’t know about a smaller stitch thank you for doing that to teach. Well done and good wishes

I just realized that I used a Pellon stabilizer for my facing, and lo and behold, the instructions that are wrapped around the stabilizer in the bolt are made of… TISSUE PAPER! I’ll be saving those instructions now, just so I can use them under my delicates. 😊

Yes, tissue paper helps all thin fabrics as well as a smaller needle.
A lot like embroidery stabilization.
Do you have a trick for stopping the edge of the lining/facing from rolling out. It's a 1 shoulder dress, and right across the front, keep rolling out
Would using the walking foot be helpful too.
I’ve heard that that can be helpful! I have never personally done it since I associate walking foot with heavier fabric, but give it a shot!
Back in the old days adding machine tape worked great!!
Use the thinnest needle?
Thats definitely the first thing you should do, but some machines will still chew at the fabric, especially at the start. In fashion school ,using industrial, regular serviced machines, my professors recommended using tissue paper on top and bottom if trouble ensues :D
Would a darning plate work to prevent the machine from eating the fabric? I wanna get out of the paper hack if I can because im sewing a large project 😂😅

WOW! Love these tips😢. I've been avoiding sewing with that slippery costume fabric because, when I've tried it before, it was always chewed up by my machine. The "paper" tips will be helpful when I ever want to use that particular fabric. I have a question, though ... Would the paper eventually dull your needle while sewing through it ? Adding paper pretty much works for anything and everything where your machine is not moving smoothly as long as it's not a mechanical issue 🥰

Would stabilizer work or is that what this is? I'm new to sewing so have no idea.
With this fabric, I might use a very light fusible interfacing strip along the zipper line to keep things from stretching, as long as your interfacing is very light and only very thin amounts in same areas then I think it could work.
But then wouldnt paper go inside the machine 😑? Love the tip but Im afraid that I will ruin the machine
Definitely use lighter paper, but just like fabric you may get some tiny fibres in there but you shouldn't get chunks :D
mines not chewing but its pulling my fabric to the left....how do you fix this?

Hey Lydia! Would this work for fleece, also? For some reason, the fabric keeps getting caught in the dogs.
It will work with anything :) I use it to start sewing folded straps or fold on the end of little straps.

How do i keep the paper from getting caught inside the stitches lol
Once you're done stitching fold back the one side and tear it off. The other side should come out quite easily. Whatever's left that you can't get out will likely wash away.

Yes, but eventually you may have to clean residue out of your machine, parchment would be better.

You can do this with any fabric causing you trouble, it helps in all kinds of circumstances 😊

What would you suggest if I’m trying to overlock brocade to prevent fraying before I sew? Seems hard to get the tissue paper out from the triangular shape.
Yes i would overlock or zigzag that kind of fabric for sure, or just a striaght stitch along the edge can help too.

Love this hack. I'm still searching for how to accurately cut out a pattern when using slippery fabric. I've tried tried the tissue paper between the layers (Still shifts); the single layer and tissue paper (still shifts); the spray starch (only when it won't leave marks) and more. This could be for satins, for crepes, for rayon challis.... PLEASE HELP!! LOL!!! I have such lovely fabric and am afraid to cut it out! Thanks so much.
Your BEST bet is getting a cutting mat and Rotary blade. That is the only fool proof way :)
