    🌻 ABOUT COSMOPOLITAN CORNBREAD 🌻
In 2016 my husband and I retired from active duty army family life and planted roots in Alabama. We started a homestead from scratch, and shared that journey here on UA-cam. In 2022 we answered the call to the mountains of Arkansas, where we are starting that journey once again.
I post videos to encourage families to embrace growing food, cooking real food and living a simpler, slower, faith-filled life. I am a whole bible believer, and share my passions for the home and the Father.
Here on Cosmopolitan Cornbread some of what you will see include:

I just found your channel a couple weeks ago, right as you had discovered your soil was toxic. My heart broke with you. I am in awe of our Father's spirit giving you the strength to persevere through such a trial.
Our family keeps sabbath too (though differently) and I feel a kinship in your videos. They are a space of kindness and vulnerability. Good on you 😉
We now live on the Olympic Peninsula (the place I dreamed of living all my life, since I was a little girl). We lived in the foothills of the Ozarks before coming here. We also had a little homestead with a small garden in the forested mountains of the south. I must admit we do not miss the ticks, or the heat. And can you believe it? Blight on tomatoes is not a guaranteed part of gardening here. And here I thought blight was just something all tomato plants go through! 😂
What we never expected to miss however, are the sounds of the crickets singing and the cicadasinthe summer. Not to mention, those intense summer storms. Watching your videos reminds me of how merciful our Father has been all along our journey, and how merciful he continues to be for all of us, His children.
I'll be standing in prayer for healing in your body. For what it's worth, our Father radically healed my body from a severely disabling autoimmune disease. I went from being completely bedridden to flare-up free for over five yeas now. Following His biblical dietary instructions played a massive role in that healing, for what it's worth ❤😊
YHWH bless you and keep you.
YHWH make his face to shine on you,
    and be gracious to you.
YHWH lift up His face toward you,
    and grant you His peace.
As His name is upon you, so shall it be.
    Shalom sister.

Shalom! Thank you so much, and welcome! Yes, I started eating biblically a few years ago and the Father showed me more and more of His word. Bless YHWH for your healing!
The PNW is a beautiful part of the country. It is funny, when we lived in Alaska, I very much missed the thunderstorms. I have always found them to be relaxing, and put me right to sleep (as long as there isn't a tornado risk with them 😉)

I guess we traded places! We moved from Western Washington to the Ozarks a few years ago!
The storms are pretty exciting here and more interesting than the near-constant drizzle if the PNW!
We love all the sunny days here, but do hate the ticks! (Please keep an eye on your Vitamin D levels so you stay healthy. )
We do miss the mountains, especially the Olympics and Rainier. Enjoy living your dream!

I lost 2 sets of adult Guineas…then I got Guinea eggs, put them under a broody hen, and she hatched out 12! The first few days, it was bedlam….they didn’t speak the same language…lol, but eventually they understood each other . I kept them away from the other chickens until the baby guineas were big enough to go outside. After they grew up, they started to fly up over the 5 foot fencing…..but they would all come back several times a day to drink, and back at night. It was amazing to watch them fly out all at once, and swoop back in the evening. They never left and my tick problem was solved for several years.

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever isn’t the only thing that you can get from ticks. I live in Georgia and several years ago my husband started running a fever and having severe headaches. He woke up on Saturday morning asked to be taken to the hospital. Before the week was over he had been tested for everything under the sun, they found out that he was in kidney failure and he was in and out of ICU and CCU. He was having episodes of AFib. He had five medical specialists and a house doctor. I asked his surgeon if there was anyway that this could be a tick borne illness and after a short discussion they called in an infectious disease specialist. He tested positive for a tick bite from a tick that is normally found in Connecticut. To make a long story short it took six months for him to recover completely. His kidneys now function at 60% and there has been no further signs of AFib. He could only have one quart of liquid per day, everything that he ate had to be fresh, nothing processed and only water to drink. After seeing what he had to go through, I am very afraid of ticks.

Years ago my mother, who grew up in Arkansas, would put powdered sulfur in a nylon sock and dust our legs or pant legs. When we used it we never got ticks or chiggers. If we were going camping she would go to the upwind side of the camp site and “pounce” that sock to let the dust drift over the ground - no ticks or chiggers.

Love the chicken story of broodies and their adopted babies! Our cochins have taken turns being broody, and we let one hatch out a couple chicks. I'd choose that over incubating and brooding chicks ourselves any day! When we need ro replace chickens and fill our coop up, I'd like to try and do it this natural route first if possible.

Taking sulfur is great for keeping ticks off of you. When you sweat you will smell like sulfur but you won't find any ticks on you. And they do come from trees sometimes. I've had my shirt covered by seed ticks befor and the only thing I had touched was a tree limb. Arkansas born and raised in the Ouachita foothills.

Good morning! I've done the "slip chicks under a broody hen" trick many times, and they've never failed me. I wait until the hen has been broody for at least a week, and slip them under her at night just as you did.
It's so nice not to have to worry about them staying warm, etc! God designed nature to do a much better job than we can.

LOL "the traitors" I was Dx w/Chronic Persistent Lyme disease years after getting infected. It is a battle. Used meds for a few years until I learned all I could with herbs and nutrition. But, like tick deterrent, it is a constant need to be aware and diligent. The flairs we experience are what I consider, reminders to put our trust in the Lord, and continue to work hard as our bodies allow. I too, will not wear long sleeves, long pants, etc. When it is hot, even here in NH, it is hot and uncomfortable.
Loved seeing the chickens to the chicks. I'm still giggling about your traitor Guinea Hens

Yes, to answer your question, ticks are in the trees. We used to take our dogs to the lake for boating and having picnics. It was a job to check everyone afterwards for ticks and we were not near any bushes or anything else than trees and water. You also didn't mention it, but Mr. Possum is a good tick deterrent. They are supposed to eat ticks, so one could say that he is earning his keep. I haven't had tick problems this year so far, but when I was in the flower bed weeding, I was eaten up by the chiggers and other insects. Very itchy time until I could dry the spots out with calamine lotion. I guess they didn't like their home being disturbed, lol.

Chiggers LOVE me but I remember my grandmother putting me in a tub of bath water where she added three capfuls of bleach and made me stay in that water soaking all over for at least 10 minutes and it still kills them to this day 60 + years later. Thankfully there are none where I live now but when I go to my sisters I get covered so bleach bath it is! I skipped that last time as thought I didn’t want those chemicals on my skin, well after the next few days of misery I believe I’m back to believing my grandmother! And I had taken a normal shower when getting back home.

Awwww that possum sleeping is so cute.
I live on a mountain and already gotten a few ticks off this month. My cousin who lived here came down with Lymes Disease. Doctors kept ignoring him and refused to test him. He got it so bad and broke out with hives and they claimed it was skin disease and gave him cream, which did nothing. His joints got to hurting so badly that it hurt to stand and he struggled to put his clothes on. Finally the doctors tested him and it was lymes disease. He has had several treatments but still struggles some. It forced him to retire early because he could not do his job.
When I was a kid, my sister got sick. She ran a fever, sore all over. They ended up removing her appendix, but she stayed sick. Turned out she had Rocky Mountain Fever.
I generally make my own bug spray up. I have yet to use it this year, but it is time. Between ticks and mosquitoes, you need something on.

    • @CosmopolitanCornbread
      @CosmopolitanCornbread  Місяць тому +1

Oh my goodness! That is awful. You know, your cousin's experience of being ignored or blown off about LD is very common. I've heard many stories like that, and my friend's daughter was nearly paralyzed before the doctors paid attention and figured out what was wrong. Did your sister fully recover? It amazes me when I hear about RMSF going undiagnosed, because it is said to be swiftly fatal!

    • @dancnluc1

@CosmopolitanCornbread My sister did. This happened in the early 70s. She was a teenager at the time it happened. As far as I know, she never had any more issues. She retired from the Navy - serving 20 years.
As for my cousin, when he was younger, he had lymes disease, but they caught it right away. They say once you get it, you will always have it in your system. He grew up here on the mountain. His family homesteaded. He was an active hunter and fisherman. I watched him going from someone who worked 8 hours mainly outside to coming home and working til dark time. Sometimes, we wore headlights to see to someone who was struggling so. It was upsetting to see doctors ignore him. I would have to help him get his shirts on due to not being able to lift his arms up. In wintertime, he wore a layer of 2 shirts and a hood for work. It has been a little over a year, and he still struggles to get around. He gave up hunting. He now has a small cabin near a lake that he stays at and fishes.

First time I had ever seen that! Needless to say, we double checked ourselves for the little buggers. I found one small one on my leg. I do have a spray, Repel, that I spray on my boots. You’re not supposed to spray your skin, just the outer ware. It does a great job. Now on to the mosquitos which are already bad because of lol the rain! Have a blessed rest of your week.

I see a functional Dr & he goes to the root cause of all these systems breaking down. I take around 30 supplements a day. If is frightening to me that my normal Dr that accepts insurance knows zero about an illness affecting millions everyday that causes autoimmune diseases & MS. & cancer. since you discovered your broody hens and the baby chicks are working out ok have you considered getting some baby guineas to slip under the two hens---they would theoretically grow up sticking around because the hens dont run off never to return...might contemplate the idea if only buy two or three to start with if it works then you can just keep adding a few at a time and soon you will have a nice flock of guineas that stick around and dont abandon you

I thought that with the week long freeze this past winter, that ticks would be less present this year, but this isn't true. I really don't think the cold kills them. As for guineas, ours disappeared to the neighbor's house a few years back. They have definitely multiplied.
I don't have the legs for anything short. LOL So I try to keep things to my knees or beyond. I don't use deet either. Toxic garbage which I am sure makes a bunch of people sicker than they realize. I love Eden's Garden! That is the brand I buy.

    • @mbmiller1956
      @mbmiller1956 Місяць тому +1

@@CosmopolitanCornbread this is from plant 4 harvest: Cedar trees are a common habitat for ticks. They provide ticks with a place to hide and a source of food. Cedar trees produce a resin that is attractive to ticks. The resin contains chemicals that mimic the scent of human sweat and body odor. This attracts ticks to the trees, where they can wait for a host to pass by.
In addition to providing a place to hide and a source of food, cedar trees also provide ticks with a way to disperse. When a cedar tree sheds its needles, the ticks can attach themselves to the needles and be carried to new areas. This helps ticks to spread to new habitats and find new hosts.

I was just wondering how my rooster would react to having baby chicks around if I let my broodie hen hatch out eggs. I may try this next spring. I live in the woods too and the ticks are always around, worst in the spring and fall. I tend to wear tight-legged capris and sandals around outside when it's warm. I can easily feel and see if something is trying to crawl up my leg. I have had a few ticks get on me that I couldn't figure out how, other than they must have blown out of tree or something. I know they can't fly, but they can crawl just about anywhere. I always apply organic bug spray when I go outside too, mostly for the black flies and mosquitos, but hopefully it helps keep the ticks off too. It has peppermint oil in it. And my husband does spray permethrin outside around the house and along the edge of the tree lines that are close to the house. He also puts out those cotton rolls that have the tick killer in it that mice will take back to their dens. It kills the ticks on the mice and prevents new ones from being born. Found those on Amazon. I don't go out in the woods during the warm weather though, if I can at all avoid it, because I know I will get ticks on me for sure if I do that, because my husband does when he's working the trees. I hate bugs so much, can't stand them on me.
