Thank you for joining us on this build! We have loved the character that our 1996 3rd Gen 4Runner brings to the fleet. Join us on overlandernetwork.com if this series is for you!
I was never a fan of this channel purely because the builds required way too much money to do, they weren't relatable. It is nice to see these builds although being an entire channel/shop revolved around these is hard to watch over and over. BUT this video alone about Stage 1 was extremely relatable with the preventative maintenance and replacements. Not exactly how-to's but a great laundry list of things people at home can do to keep their rigs running, especially great Toyotas. I look forward to seeing Stage 2 and similar video-content in the future because I legitimately think you guys are on the right track to broaden the channel's content for variety to attract more viewers!
New here and subscribed after watching this video and couldn’t agree more. It’s content like this progressive build I enjoy. Could I possibly responsibly afford an all out build yes do I or the average weekend warrior need it no. It’s builds like these that point out key points where anyone can say yes that’ll be my stoping point or what are other options at these point to fit me.
Most people in this economic climate will not be buying new vehicles, due to the astronomical expense. This build makes perfect sense for the majority of enthusiasts with an older; but, legendary Toyota! This is probably why I subscribed! I do give some credit to Last Line of Defense! He also does great builds! Thank you all! Take good care!
Watched this video when it first came out and love it. I recently came up on a 99 4runner sr5 sport edition 198k 4x4 rear locker and TRD supercharger. Top end was recently rebuilt along with cooling system. Paid $7,500. This video is going to help me restore my 4runner. Thanks for the great content.
I've been waiting years for this. Even emailed Tanner a few times for updates. Went on to build a close copy of this car over the last year. X overland really inspired me
Thank you so much for doing this series! It’s exactly what I’ve been hoping for for a long time. I just bought a new Ram 2500 which I will turn into an overlanding beast over the next few years. It’s very helpful to be able to think through what is important to do right now and what can wait until later. Thank you!
I liked his explanation of why they changed the parts. When you cut corners your gambling with your rig. Plus his explanation for the axles was very logical and forward thinking.
I got a 97 4x4 4R: Good build! Please install OEM lower ball joints and a radiator (Denso works fine) to avoid pink milkshake. Install OEM alternator brush kit and starter contacts into the existing alternator/Starter. A/M parts FAIL! Install the A/C idler bearing 6203 (avoid A/M), had the 4R since 2009 and it is in pristine condition. Did all OEM bushings all around. I have 2 drive shaft in my shopping basket for my 100 LC and after seeing you do the shaft, I now want to purchase those shafts for LC as it is my long distance vehicle. Any A/M Cv's are junk! (the inboard splines wear out in less than 15K miles). Best would be to reboot the OEM CV's. Keep an extra ignition coil pack, 2-3 fuel injectors. TPS. If you plan to do the rear axle bearings/selas pelase follow TIM's video on UA-cam (pay attention to the Sharpie test on ABS tone ring retainer: if didn't mount properly, oil will leak again) Good Luck!
energy suspension makes a bushing kit for your new ps rack that make a big difference in feel and stability. highly recommend. That rear brake hose looks a little short.
No lower ball joints? Maybe I missed it. For those of you who don’t know, the ball joints fail catastrophically on these trucks, it’s very important to check them for play on a regular basis and replace them with OEM LBJ’s ONLY on an as needed basis.
Guys, what a Great video. I love the style of this video. Different from your (and other channels) but, completely fits in to the 'XO Multiverse". Keep up the great work.
Glad you enjoyed it! We had a lot of fun with it! We're hoping to create more "masterclass" style series like this in the future for sure. Any topics you think we should cover?
I really enjoyed this. I’ve got an FJ cruiser I have been wanting to upgrade and these are all things I would like to do. This gives me a great order to proceed in.
Really awesome video. I’ve been waiting years for this video to drop. My 99’ sport 4runner “highlander” has been such an incredible rig for my family to adventure in. Im using grabber X3 also as I was I inspired by expedition overlands builds and the interview with the guy from General tire. I’ll have to subscribe to see the rest for sure.
I’ve broken a boot on my FJ cruiser before. It sucks to replace them they take forever to do. But luckily they’re not super expensive usually when I replace one I just go ahead and do both
i have been waiting for this video build for a while, love it cant wait to see the rest of it. i think the 3rd gen are the best looking suvs, and i love my 97 third gen. i have a question don't you think you all need to have a pan hard correction kit for the lift?
I have a 1999 3rd gen 4x4 SR5 w/5spd manual trans. I too think they need a Panhard Correction Kit! Eimkeith is a great one, but I've heard of recent one's that bolt on instead of weld on. Good point!
One thing you guys didnt say but when lifting a vehicle with a track bar either front or rear, in this case rear, an adjustable length one is important to keep axle centered in vehicle
Great video! Really excited for this series! I appreciate the tips and tricks as well as the must do items, and recommended items. Also, is this the same 4Runner w the Magnuson Supercharger that we’ve seen? 👀
It was cool. I have a 2008 tundra crewmax with 165k with a level kit . I also own a manual jeep wrangler 2012 with cheap 2 inch lift ,winch, offbroad tires with 125k. Both paid off and mechanically good. Great content as I been pondering which to start. I go and forth. Great content to help me think.
Exciting build, because there are still plenty of 3rd gen 4runners out there in the world; however, 45psi?! For street pressure?! I usually set my 3rd gen at 32psi all around. 45psi seems too excessive! Lol, whatever makes people happy I guess. Thank you!
Great video. Well done. Just started on my 2000 limited so this is great to see. I just wish I had a lift like that as things would be oh so much easier. Oh, also, get on you buddies at CBI for no longer making the 3rd gen front bumper.
This was great to watch an "everyman" build, complete with a lot of great ideas for things to look out for. Well done guys. It was a bit painful to watch your use of the air impact though.... not a torque wrench in sight! The cv axle on my truck has a torque of roughly 70ft/lbs, an impact puts out what, 400+?
I think it severely missed the budget part of the budget build. They were already 8 grand into it not counting the cost of vehicle and engine repair cost, and the only overland parts that were installed was diff bushings and a 4 grand ICON set. Which is the opposite of budget suspension
If you consider how this 3rd gen is being built, it is a good step in the right direction. Mainly, because it is a Pan-American expedition build. The budget is in the consideration of the long haul; eventually an ultimate build, for Overlanding. The suspension seems to be one of the biggest expenses, if your a serious enthusiast! I'm just glad to see this build finally! Lol. Take good care out there!
I agree with the napa CV rationale for a vehicle that is going to remain in the US but you should have used the extended travel cv that allows you to use the full range of your lifts travel without binding up and breaking like the others do at full droop on an aftermarket coilover
New here and subscribed after watching this video. It’s content like this; progressive builds; I enjoy. Could I possibly responsibly afford an all out build like this ones end goal…yes maybe. Do I or the average weekend warrior need to..no as long as you know your limit. It’s builds like these that point out key points where anyone can say yes that’ll be my stoping point or what are other options at this point to fit means my end goal.
What type of battery did you install in there and is that battery bracket required to fit the new battery. I’m currently building a 3rd Gen and the electrical system is my current project.
I’ve met an individual traveling that route in a STOCK Nissan Frontier. Currently building a free Jeep Liberty for the easier trails in Moab, certainly NOT overlanding
Another tip for more clearance, before u went tested it out on the trail for the first time. TAKE OFF THE SIDE STEPS 😂 u don’t need them whatsoever and add like 6 inches of clearance on the sides
Im working on a 1947 Willys CJ2A build. Benz Diesel Willys Brute what im calling it. 4cyl Mercedes Benz Diesel, D30/44 axles, full lockers, warn hubs. Front changing to coil & 3 link. Rear stretching to a LJ “ unicorn wheelbase “. To give me chassis length for a 6’ bed. Building a Half crew cab. Sitting on 33s. Once driving then Twin Turbos get installed
Something to consider for future projects . Any bushing or suspension thru bolt should be torqued with the full weight of the vehicle , wheels and tires on the ground or a four poster drive on hoist. It's not always easy to do, but doing it with the full weight of the vehicle will prevent the bushings from twisting which eventually leads to cracks and failure .
I have 06 Tacoma, my rear diff's fill whole plug is seized, how do I get it off without damaging it? I'm also pass due for changing the fluids because of it.
We are not a credentialed shop, but we generally use some type of vibration to break seized bolts loose! This could be an air hammer or hammering a breaker bar to loosen things up. I would consult a local tech if it continues to be an issue
@@ExpeditionOverland ok, thanks. that helps thanks for the info. People have told me to just use a blow tourch on it, but I know that will leave the metal weaker and more likely to strip the threads because of the metal being softer in a heated state after it cools
If you really wanted another 3rd gen 4R, just start looking around for one, but make sure all check lists are met, and avoid rust as much as possible! 👍

This was very well done and extremely good information for everyone wanting to do a build! Nice work you two.
Do you still have the Gladiator in the FLeet?

Possibly the best series XOverland has done. Awesome stuff guys!

stoked you guys gave love to this 3rd gen, a timeless truck in my opinion!

Always good to see older vehicles getting love.
Wow! Learned a lot from this video. Good to see what can be done even with what’s considered an old rig. Nice! Looking forward to episode 2.
Thanks for watching!
So much effort put in to the production of this video! Thanks XO!
Glad you enjoyed it!
this release is perfect timing! i just picked up my very own 3rd gen T4R! 97 3.4L 5 speed
I love that you included some troubleshooting tips along the way. The running tally for the budget is a nice touch too. Thanks for making the video!
Glad it was helpful!
Great series!
In todays economy add another 8k to that 4Runner.
That will turn those 2020 numbers into 2022 numbers!
Get a standard shift car and if your starter does go out you can kickstart it. It’s also a Millennial anti-theft device.
