indeed as a t-shirt and jeans kind of guy, and a Navy submarines veteran, I would much rather be on an expedition cruise! Especially one of those where they're doing science and you can help them, such as help take ice cores. Awesome! :)
Went on my first expedition cruise 2020 before everything went crazy. Travelled solo to Antarctica from Punta Arenas with Hurtigruten, didn't pay a solo subsidy. Thoroughly enjoyed lectures - what was stressed was don't damage the environment and don't pat the wildlife. Had penguins nibbling at camera strap on several occassions - Don't Pat the Wildlife (hard to comply with). Have had both knees replaced and spinal fusion, had no major issues with landings & activities, crew assisted where required. Oldest passenger that I met was a chap from Norway, recovering from a stroke, travelling with his son - he was 80. Would recommend to all, one for the wildlife interaction, two for the remoteness, three for the sheer majesty of the place, four for the diversity of the passengers (27 nationalities from 388 passengers), five for the swim at Stonington Island (69°S & water temp -0.5° c, got my certificate!). Would do it again in a heart beat.
what an amazing experience you've had! I will be going to Antarctica with Hurtigruten this December during Christmas and I cannot wait. Just a question though: Was it physically hard to walk thru the snow/exhausting taking the on land/on shore excursions?
Wow!! Thank you for posting this reply. I would love to go on an expedition cruise to Antartica and other places but I have severe spinal stenosis and plantar fasciitis and wondered if I could do this. You have inspired me to do it!
@@lghealthyover6074 I have the same back problem and cannot walk and stand for long. I’m planning to have minimally invasive spinal decompression surgery before I attempt antartica as it’s so expensive as well.
I’m watching this from the Crystal Endeavor in Antarctica. We’re on our way to our next island where we’ll get to kayak. This certainly is a bucket list kind of cruise! Magnificent!
Wow! That sounds wonderful. Both types of cruising are fine by me. I have learned just to be pliable or flexible. I’m happy to know they take safety & security very seriously for all involved. Love it 👍
"Stopping, standing still, and taking it all in.." (at 14:54) sounds like an excellent goal for life in general, as well as for an amazing expedition cruise. Wonderful video Gary. Many thanks.
I have taken to putting the camera away, and enjoying the moment. Your mind's eye will remember it well enough. You probably won't look at the photos afterwards anyway.
The fact that these expedition cruises can and will divert can really add to the experience as well. While in the Galapagos the captain took us over to an active volcano in the pre-dawn darkness. Just amazing to see. The other thing that was interesting with the excursions there is they generally did have two choices with each stop, typically a longer trek or a shorter trek and they would just divide up the zodiacs based on how many people wanted to do each. We'd pick the night before. It worked out well. And as you said, it's a much more active cruise than normal, so having days you could choose to take the shorter trek worked out for many.
I did an Antarctic expedition cruise on Quark Expeditions in 2013 - is by far the most amazing trip I've done. If you are going to Antarctica - do it on a small ship - less than 200 passengers.
Thank you for the insights. Some I was aware of but it brought home quickly the importance of biological safety for these places too. The idea of putting down the camera is noteworthy too
Thank you, Gary. Packed with practical information, as always👍 Looks like an amazing trip, one for a bucket list. Thanks again, I'm looking forward to your next video😊
I deeply envy you this trip! Regular cruising has never appealed to me but I have always wanted to have Great Adventures. Unfortunately my finances and my health have never permitted. I'm very grateful that I can watch videos like this and at least imagine what it would be like. Thank you!
This is so helpful!!!!! I can imagine the complaints the crew has to deal with from passengers not prepared for the uncertainties and the lack of bling on this type of cruise.
An excellent recap of what is all involved with expedition cruising in the Antarctic. I still want to go, but, will have to see if I can do in 2025 since already booked up. I really appreciate your pros and cons approach to this type of cruising as I am sure it's not for everybody.
Good evening Sir Gary. I never considered an expedition cruise. But after following you on UA-cam closely. It looked amazing. Understood the daily program can change. Diversions to see orca or humpback whales would be amazing. Risks understood as well. And it is definitely understood one must know their physical capabilities. This is wonderful that there are mandatory briefings. All in the name of safety. Wonderful comparisons and tips. Thanks so much and see you next video.
The old Fred Olsen "Black Watch" would have made a great "cheap" expedition ship but I don't think it was ever used as such. It had an open rear for launching rafts and canoes.
Excellent summary of the differences. Did Antarctica in January on Crystal Endeavor. Great ship, crew, and experiences; so sad that Crystal went under.
My expedition trips were on a small-ish ship (750 pax but limited to 500 for Antarctica). At that time it was actually affordable. My repeat sailings allowed me friendships with the excellent expedition staff-the ornithologist actually had me on the stage to demonstrate wingspan when his PowerPoint failed. I spent time with those folks who absolutely loved what they were doing-within their solid expertise but not their everyday jobs. I’d actually prefer a more bare bones true expedition type trip vs a luxury experience-just my preference. But at current rates and my age I won’t get there again. It’s an unforgettable experience.
Great video. But the flexibility of the itinerary on expedition cruises depends on the destination. In heavily regulated destinations (like the Galapagos) itineraries cannot divert.
Found your videos not too long ago. Really enjoy hearing your experiences and perspectives on cruising. Absolutely love your wall of Art Deco/Art Nouveau-style vintage sailing ship posters.
I went in 2018. The days were planned less than 24hr in advance. We missed a shore landing due to a blizzard. (Amazing sight) Our scheduled route was blocked by ice, and we had to backtrack. Our last day was totally re-arranged and the crew ended up just finding an unexplored bay and letting us have a few hours on the zodiacs just riding along the shoreline. I overheard a couple ladies complaining about the pre-cruise medical clearance, and they were saying that if anyone got sick, the Coast Guard would run out and pick us up. I didn't try to explain how far out of range of rescue we really were. Pack your patience and expect changes. It's an amazing place to visit.
Fond memories of our visit to this region. Scenery and wildlife was spectacular. Remember the teenage fur seals being of particular concern on landings but the crew were wonderful in ensuring our safety.
This sounds really interesting. I think you've just sold me on trying an expedition cruise out. Not anytime soon, I have other things to look after in my life first, but when I got things rolling in the right direction, I hope I remember this different style of cruising!
Very important is to be fit enough to do it all. As I get older I’m dismayed at how much harder it is to walk many miles and do it day after day after day when I travel. And jumping down and climbing up deteriorates so quickly as I’ve aged with a sedentary job. I have to do extra training ahead of time to really enjoy active trips. Hopefully you are in better shape. 👍🏼 I’m sure you’ll have fun.
This looks like a great adventure, but I must say you have certainly experienced a lot of great things around the world. I do not imagine you will ever say I am bored, but whats is next. Seeing the penguins, whales and seals as well as so many great views would make the trip a quite complete.
I love this so much! I've never cruised and I plan that my first one be an expedition cruise. I've even already received catalogs from several companies. I so appreciate your focus on this experience!
Thank you so much for posting this video. I just went for my first non- expedition cruise (after about 10 years) and am now feeling ready to go on an expedition cruise. Thank you for outlining the differences between traditional cruising and expedition cruising. I didn’t know any of these differences.
I have always fancied this type of cruise and your infomation, presentation and facts were superb. I always enjoy your videos and this , I think, is your finest to date, thank you so much.
Fantastic video. I felt like I was right there with you and the group. I’ll be going in Jan 2023 as you know, but on Princess. Not the same by any stretch but it is fine for me. I’m so happy you were able to go.
As usual a lot of excellent points to consider. @innocentsabroad and I are looking forward to our trip at the end of 2022 and feel more prepared with the information you provided.
This is really useful information in an area which is much more popular than ever before and still growing. The accommodations have rapidly improved as well. Many people will benefit from seeing this post.
Thank you for your concise information, I am sure that you will enable many cruisers to make an educated decision on the type of cruise needs they have. Looks like a lot of fuss pre embarcatio, but totally worth the effort.
We've done half a dozen expedition cruises with Lindblad, and it's true -- we've never done the scheduled itinerary, and we've never regretted the changes. The most extreme was the time we had to lay over at Copenhagen for repairs, and thus missed our stop in Lubeck. Instead, we got an extra day in Copenhagen with a unique visit to the (not yet open to the public) Maersk Opera House and an afternoon in the Royal Danish Museum. Hard to complain. On another occasion, the ship diverted for a couple of hours in the Bay of Biscay to follow a pod of whales. More than worth the delay. And, frankly, 140 other passengers is more than enough...
so informative, Gary…thank you. I am just in the beginning stages of planning an Antarctic cruise. A lot of the differences between expedition and classic seem intuitive and common sense, but it’s good to see it confirmed and understand the “why”.
For many of us, an expedition cruise is permanently out of our price range. The best we can do is vicariously go along with you - thanks so much for taking us. Would love to hear your (or anyone’s) thoughts on a sail-by Antarctic cruise, as they can be much more affordable.
One would hope that most passengers would know what they're in for. This is almost like a scientific expedition, and being in Antarctica is a privilege. The part of your video about safety is a real eye-opener, knowing that medical help is far away.
Nice guide for what to expect. I had no idea. It would be helpful to get a comparison of companies that offer expedition cruises and priced. I don’t mind there is no casino, entertainment, spas and other things you find on the classic big cruise ships
The open question people have with these shore excursions is whether you can go the bathroom. The research stops may have bathroom facilities, but not the other excursion stops. Some expedition companies over overnight camping on Antarctica and that includes a potable toilet. However, between the zodiac rides around the shore landings, you could potentially be out in the elements for 3 plus hours, did Silversea or Ponant carry portable toilets for their passengers? Some blog posts say skip the second cup of coffee because you just have to "hold it in" until getting back on the ship.
Those booking expedition cruises should be aware that those types of cruises are much more likely to change key elements than pleasure cruises. Example: A recent passenger who made his own flight arrangements was angry with the cruise line because they changed the port of embarkation, and his non-refundable flight no longer worked. Do not buy non-refundable flights for these, and it’s better to buy door-to-door from the cruise company. There are logistical and ship-supply issues that the cruise companies have limited control over.
Thank you for this video. I have been looking into an expedition cruise and this answered many questions for me. Well done! How rough riding are those smaller ships? My wife is prone to motion sickness and doesn't want 2 weeks of side effects from motion sickness meds.

This sounds much more appealing to me than a regular cruise.
I did both. LOVED expedition. Bored on luxury cruise. Even preferred the food on our expedition
Ditto. If only I had more extra cash. :-)
Literally sounds like something from a adventure book
Even the "entertainment team" looked like they were having fun

That Antarctic ship actually looks way nicer to me.. The dining room, the common areas, even the design of the ship looks much more appealing.
We're heading down to Antarctica with Viking Octantis in February. Your videos have been great to help us prepare. Thanks!

Amazing experience! Thank you for bringing us along.
Good on them for taking the risks serious and putting risk management practices in-place... I am surprised.
Thank you for sharing your experience. This would be the ultimate opportunity.
The most impressive night sky I have ever seen was in the South Pacific Moorea, but I suppose an Antarctica trip has no night sky.
Great detailed information for Expedition Cruising
This was great, thank you! Several things I hadn't thought of.
Glad it was helpful!
Will go to the Antarctica early March 2023 with the MS Expedition - so excited!

What line was THAT?
Informative tips. I thought you've been on expedition cruises before so I'm surprised you were surprised by the differences.
Still loving the strip show!
Very interesting video ! Looks like a great way to cruise. Thanks for the details. Great video.
Thanks for watching!
Fantastic episode. Now I want to go expedition cruising!
I love everything about it! Except the price.
That sounds like such a cool cruise!
Very insightful information. Thank you for sharing.
Sounds like a cruise I would really enjoy. 👍
Sounds like a much better job for the right command crew. Routine is a killer.
Did an expedition trip to New Zealand in 2019 and visited the volcano on White Island which blew up last year killing everyone who went.
😳
Thank you for this video. I have been looking into an expedition cruise and this answered many questions for me. Well done!
How rough riding are those smaller ships? My wife is prone to motion sickness and doesn't want 2 weeks of side effects from motion sickness meds.
I Love your vids. I'll never cruise but I still love your vids. 🥰
I would love to go on an expedition cruise!
With COVID regular cruise itineraries are changing like expedition cruises.
What an amazing trip
Sounds like a dream. Wish I could afford it.
Can't wait for my chance to go!
I thought this was not your first expedition cruise? I recall several videos on this topic from you.
This was really helpful, Gary! We are booked on the Celebrity Xpedition to the Galapagos in 2023 and really looking forward to it!
This looks quite amazing!
Thanks. One of your best !
I think you should edit out you wearing jeans underneath in the polar area. Its a very bad tip to people not familiar with cold climate. Cotton is a huge no-no in the cold. Its stiff and cluncky and if it get wet it becomes cold and heavy. Wool is much better, if one lair aren't enough put on another one. If thats not enough you can use a fleece pants but thats way to warm in Antarctica in the summertime.
This type of cruising sounds a little too much like work for my tastes, especially at $1000 per day! I'll take my $50 per day Carnival cruises with sandy beaches, warm weather and nightlife! However, it was definitely enjoyable to watch your videos on the subject, very well done.
My ultimate dream
Great update. Thank you v much
My pleasure
I like to sleep until around 11. Guess I'll miss all the excursions!
