Prius No Dash Lights FIXED

- This is a quick 7 minute video of how I repaired the instrument cluster in a 2007 Toyota Prius. There is a faulty capacitor on the circuit board that causes the dash lights to become inoperable. The capacitor and solder repair starts about halfway through the video if you're in a hurry. I replaced the 100uf 16v capacitor with a 220 uf 16v capacitor. This corrected the problem and took roughly 2 hours from start to finish
Thanks so much for posting this video! We replaced the capacitors on two Prius's yesterday. Purchased them from Digi-Key. Repaired each car in under two hours. Figured we saved about $3000.
Glad to be of help 🖒
The car is holding out to this day. My brother drives it & the dash lights are still working great, been over a year now
Everyone with a Prius should love this video! The extra tips were good. Yeah, I need the work done!
Just wanted to say thank you for the video. I had this problem for about 2 years already. I knew it was a capacitor in the cluster. But I never knew which one or what to use as a replacement. I was about to pay someone through ebay to do this service. My family and I thank you very much. I did it yesterday and it was a breeze to do. Took me about 2 hours in total. Thanks again!
I'm having this problem on my prius please help a girl out
@@karinacamino5616 what are you having issues on?
@@Oink_Blaster Hello.
I've been having this issue for the past 3 or 4 months and it's sometimes not all the times. When I turn on my war the dashboard is just complete pitch black and when that happens I have difficulties turning off my car also my trunk locks and can't open it. I don't know what it is maybe you can help me out
@@karinacamino5616 are you confident with removing the air vent trim and dashboard and a little soldering? Doing it is not for everyone, due to not everyone having the confidence and patience. If you're up for it, I suggest you watch videos on how to remove the dashboard. That way you get familiar with the process. If you have any questions or if you're stuck somewhere, let me know 👍
@@Oink_Blaster not so confident about it. I need a man
I replaced this capacitor on mine with the same problem and it fixed it, it's going to take you a half a day probably the first time around to do this. Not breaking any of the vents while removing them is probably the biggest challenge next to actually soldering on the capacitor. Be patient with everything.
Simple one is to open any door and watch "OPEN DOORS" light which should be off, same time press brake and release and turn lights to low beam and off couple of times until "OPEN DOORS" light came on. After light is on you can start the car normally.
Tried a lot of different tips and tricks. This one worked for me. THANK YOU!!
Thank you John, I was able to fix my dashboard .
Thanks for the info; I replaced my cap on an 09 Prius, I hooked everything up, powered up, everything was good. Shut it off, finished installing all the panels, powered up to go for test drive; all my instrument panels lights were out again.
Not sure now what is wrong.
Wow that's my car right there, thank you 🙏🙏🥰🥰🥰🥰
Is it always the capacitor that causes this problem?
Where do you recommend someone get this done?
Remember, you can turn off the car by holding the power button 3 seconds. It goes to accessory mode. Then 2 quick times turns off the car.
what if you do this repair and it works for like 2 months but then goes out for good?
My brother has been driving the car ever since the repair was done with no problems
For that job dealer will charge you almost $ 1.000 dollars. Part and labor.
My mechanic told me I should replace all 10 capacitors with increased voltage ratings so that it could handle more power, also because you never know when the next ones will go out. Here are the replacement specs for the ones I used and are working in my car currently =)
10uf - 35v original > 10uf - 50v replacement
100uf - 16v original > 100uf - 25v replacement
22uf - 63v original > 22uf - 100v replacement
330uf - 35v original > 330uf - 50v replacement
100uf - 50v original > 100uf - 63v replacement
I have no lights at all no ready light just a check engine light when you first start the car and the center display does not count my miles are my miles per gallon
Does Toyota still make the instrument cluster for this car
Hey, why did you replace it with 220uf 16 v instead of the same one 100uf 16v
Because it's what I had spare laying around out of an old junk TV board. It's safe to go with a higher uf measurement, just not any lower. Also the voltage has to be exactly the same, 16v
@@JohnCalebWarren That's complete BS! You can go with a higher voltage, not a higher or different capacitance unless you know something and are redesigning the circuit.
@@robertrukidding3055 There are videos available on youtube showing Toyota "upgraded" from 100 to 220.... with newer models.. Also the "old" capacitor has a tolerance of 20% --> 80 to 120. There's a guy testing the 100 uF and measures 81 uF and his display is out... Capacitors age.... So I think 220uF (as Toyota is using in " newer" units is ok! My 5 cts..
I saw some available 220uF 16v capacitors on Amazon. Both have prongs. One is 85C and another is 105C. Would you know which capacitor should be used?
105c would be best. Prongs are fine, just as long as it's 16v & at least 200uf
I agree with the other guy, I believe the one I used was also 105 and 220uf, 16 volts or above and 200 microfarad or above should work so long as it fits.
I unplugged the SRS connector to replace the combo meter and after I put everything back together I got a airbag warning light on my dash anybody know how to fix this? Thanks
И как успехи работоспособности ? Больше не отключалась табло ?
Help! I did this repair and now I get red airbag light. Checked the airbag connections on passenger side and they look fine
I believe you left the airbag plug on the passenger side glove box area disconnected or not fully reconnected properly. Pull the glove box and double check that connection, yellow harness. Make sure to disconnect your battery before you mess with that, airbags are really finicky
Would a 220uf 35volt 105c would work?
It might but I wouldn't chance it, taking it that it's all the way back there in the dash. I would try to find one with the correct voltage. I have replaced them with higher voltage in TVs and it works, but I wouldn't chance it given its location
Thanks for the fast response. I did order one from amazon for tomorrow . thanks!!!
With this program...the backup lights don't work..see wiring diagram...FYI...
Backup lights work perfectly fine after this repair, and are still working fine, just FYI
You replaced a polymer capacitor with an electrolytic... which will have a shorter life.
It's still working great to this day 😁
@@JohnCalebWarren well, I ended up doing the same thing, but the problem turned out to be a chewed through ground. It’s amazing how critters ignore all the other wires.
Where?
@@RobertGolden1952 Driver side beneath the dash, above the gas pedal. You need to take out the shifter to see it I recall.
