  • Follow along while I'm attending Battle of Wisby for the first time ever!
Some glimpses from the Medieval Week are also included, as well as my preparations before the event.
    SOME FACTS:
Battle of Wisby recreates two battles wich took place in 1361. These were the Battle of Mästerby and the battle outside the wall itself, Battle of Wisby. These were consequences of the Danish king Waldemar Atterdag invading Gotland,an Swedish island in the Baltic Sea, and wanting to subjugating the island as he had done the same in southern parts of Sweden. The Danish army was superior and quickly won the two battles, forcing the local people to surrender. The event also consists of a camp outside the city wall, with hundreds of reenactors living, from all over the world, for an entire week.

Extra thank you to Hillevi Andersson,
Maja Pisarewska Rugstad and Mats Gard for helping me with the filming ♡
Pictures in the thumbnail are taken by Cornelius wom Hofe
The music after the Battle of Wisby are played by the very talented Ernst Stoltz, www.ernststolz.... Thank you for letting me borrow your music!

Prehenactment: the well known stress before, time optimism failing, starting too late...
Re-enactment: the fun, the joy, the long days, the hard work, the fresh air, the smoke in your eyes, the bugs in your bed
De-enactment: the days or week of low energy hitting you hard, the long time to unpack and the need to do this again, and again.
It was nice meeting and sharing the camp, getting to know you somewhat etc. Let's do it again!

So I see this is almost a year old, so you may have learned this by now, but we help the bug situation at my events by putting down diatomaceous earth (I think cinnamon works too if there's laws at your location about what you can put down) under the foot print of the tent and about a foot around it and then putting down a tarp or two (water proof and then canvas if you're doing both), and then the tent on top of all of that. Diatomaceous earth can be bought at hardware and gardening stores I think
It's not a perfect solution, but it sure helps massively. Some of us will also put a sacrificial snack at a far corner just outside the tent so any bugs that make it in go for that instead of the bed.

I love the fact that you are willing to show what isn't perfect. Most youtubers (and people in general), in my experience, wouldn't show things like that they have not been able to finish all the hemming. And I think it is a ridge instead of a hill.

13:15 - As an Australian allow me to emphasise the importance of laying down a ground sheet or boards when pitching a tent anywhere. I made the mistake of not doing that once as a child and I curled up asleep, put my hand under my pillow, and was woken by movement under there. The entire bedding was filled with enough species to keep an entomologist busy for weeks.

A word of encouragement, my dear. You are doing very well sewing all this, and it's fine to bring a project to work on, and mending small things first gives you a sense of accomplishment. Sew some fur on that brown one and off you go.

I thoroughly enjoyed the video. I do re-enactments with the SCA it’s not the same, in that we re-enact medieval time periods not specific battles, plus we are in the USA so we don’t really get the authentic feel like you do. But I say if you enjoy showing what you do with the clothing you are making it makes it so much better for the viewers as well. Well done!

As a passionate lover of everything medieval (of course I am a romantic), passionate about history and having studied a year of drama/theatre performance, reinactment is something I would absolutely love doing! I used to go to medieval fairs, which were held once a year just 15 minutes from here at a 12th century castle, but sadly, for some reason they stopped doing it! It was left for a few years and thus, the castle fell into disrepair again, after they had just restored it enough for the public to come and see it. It is currently under more restoration and I really hope they will do the fairs again in the future!

For 27 minutes and 35 seconds I didn’t miss sewing AT ALL! Your experience in the re-enactments was fabulous. I stopped the screen many times to get a look at the different styles being worn, and all the ages represented. And you’re right. It was very powerful watching a woman looking for her loved one to no avail. It’s easy to see why people enjoy these groups! Having a common interest always creates a bond. And having times during the year when you all get together to enjoy your hobby/side job/career makes it even more enjoyable. Thank you for sharing!

Toni Jenkins having been both to Battle of Wisby (only recently back home) and many Canterbury Faires, it’s a different experience, the main differences being: CF is a private event of ~250-300ppl, Where BoW has 350 in camp but 40,000 in town for medieval week; CF is multi-period where BoW is only C14th, meaning more like-minded nerding to be had; CF is in a lovely green site but BoW is camping in the east graveyard outside the Wisby city wall, and it’s are to top that atmosphere; language, as everyone at CF speaks English, but BoW has about 20 languages and even more cultures going on; finally, the markets, where Both CF and BoW have an internal market event, BoW also has the medieval week markets which attracts 90% crap and 10% awesome gems of vendors, and is huge, so can buy superb fabrics, lovely dress accessories, and many other cool things that aren’t as easily available in AU or NZ (except by ordering online, which is not the same as handling then buying at an event).

I do re-enactments from the 1600-1800's, in Canada. I'm First Nations (Mi'kmaq-Oneida) and I wear authentic clothing from those eras. Sometimes its Native, and sometimes its French Colonial. I don't have any videos yet, but as soon as COVID is done, and I go to my next re-enactment in Nova Scotia, I'll post some stuff. It was a lot of fun watching your re-enactment, and I learned a lot. I love your chickens! They’re so pretty. And so much better behaved than ours. When we open the coop door they just fly out and into whoever might be standing in the way! And they don’t like hugs. I need training on chicken whisperer skills. 🤣

Hi Elin. This video was magic. My son and I go to the Abby Medieval Festival in Australia most years. (Cancelled this year due to Covid restrictions.) It’s a weekend event and there are medieval groups of knights and chapters and their whole retinue. We make our clothes and go as visitors but it is not as long as yours. My clothes are very ordinary compared. Cheap cotton kirtles and modern shoes. The knights and medieval enactors wear authentic clothing. I am inspired now to make him and me genuine medieval clothing for next years events. Thank you for sharing your beautiful work. I am sorry you were so stressed leading up to the event. I go through this saga of too much to finish for every wedding that I sew for, for my family and friends. (Labour’s of love... it’s not a paid job!) It’s stress right up until the clothes and gowns are delivered. I am currently going through that right now for my daughters wedding and this truly helped me relax and smile and know it will be okay! You are a remarkable young person and a true inspiration! Bless you!😊

My husband was doing for 10 years medieval fights reenactments, we are Polish. Grunwald 1410 battle especially. He was basically going to those reenactments to fight in friendly way with other guys, hitting them with his Lutzeral hummer, because f*** swords, like "I am 2 meter tall, 110 kg guy, just give me a hammer." He was even representing Poland in international battles (that exist for real, I wasn't aware for years that he had to proof that he fights very good and they chose him between many, I thought that they were taking everybody, that is sexy). As from a person being completely not interested in the topic and being awkwardly unaware and surprised of, you would thought, basic knowledge about reenactments, you medievals, are pack of great and hilarious people.
O, I slept under tent almost identical like yours. It is freaking great in hot summers, the breeze that is going just above the ground, where tent doesn't touch it very refreshing.

I LOVE this video so much! Not just that it is stunnishing beautiful filmed and cutted, that the chosen music fits perfectly and it is sweet and heartwarming for the talking, dancing and sewing parts in it. It is all in one! I by myself are LARPer in germany. It is not the same, sure. Reenactment is the kingdiscipline under all kinds of events, where you can dress out of the "usual". But I can feel with you. There are a week in a tent too, with lots of dishwashing, basic food cooked on fires, the sounds of handmade music or alarmshouts or metaltools hammered at an ambos, the smell of onion everywhere, tons of sand and ash and dust and rain in the clothes. When it rains, then you have to try all you can to stay dry, because you will carry the cold with you for hours, straight to the bones, if you faile. And there are no umbrellas. And the battles. We have them too. And once in a while, you feel something, that you never felt before in your allday life. Because there is (luckely) no place to fear or to grieve so intensely with complete strangers around you, and knowing at the same time, that you are safe in reality. I hope to see more of this kind of experience. It feels like coming home to the summer. And that, even so it is part of your life and you're living so far away. Looking your channel feels like there are so many souls out there, feeling the same kind of home. That the world is smaller an bigger at the same time.

I am a new friend in this channel and I have started watching your videos from the first up to this one.
I liked them all and I think hey are all amazing. So ... I didn't see so much. But I saw this piece.
This little film here is something else.
The richness of emotions that it awakened in me is unique.
After watching this I feel now like there was a storm inside of me and left me lost but at the same time happy.
Initially I started to watch your work because I love medieaeval art and crafts and your former videos are very catchy. The music is also a very strong element.
I must say, that I wasn't expecting such a strong experience than what this video has offered .
Thank you. What you do is just so beautyful.

You both looked fabulous! I have been as a spectator to many multi-period reenactments here in the U.K. and I have a keen interest in the living history side rather than the battles. It looks like you all had a fantastic time despite the rain. Thank you so much for sharing your adventure here.

Gorgeously put together video, your enthusiasm is absolutely infectious. Your kirtle making video had inspired me to have a go at sewing some medieval style clothing and trying to adapt them with my every day wear and this video just solidified my resolve. Thank you! Please keep making more videos, you have a true talent for it. xx

No apologies necessary! This was a fantastic video. I have friends here in the US who belong to SCA, the Society for Creative Anachronism. They attend events like this every year so it’s interesting to see what these events are like. Morgan Donner, another UA-camr that you are probably familiar with, is a member of SCA, if I’m not mistaken.

Aw! It was amazing to see everything in this video. I am from Chile and very passionate about medieval history. It turn out that the same year, 2019, I visited Visby during July and all I ever wanted was to stay till the medieval week in August, but I couldn't. My heart was broken. So thanks for sharing it, it was like being there... The good thing was that I met my boyfriend there and then I came back and stayed in Visby during January and February. To being able to see the city through your video brings me back so many lovely memories... I'm just hoping this quarantine-thing to pass so I can return to my beloved Visby and my loving boyfriend... And maybe one day I can enjoy the medieval week too. I hope to meet you there. Greetings!

This video might be a few months old, but I really, really liked it! Not only to see the clothes you made in action but also to watch the reenactments going on. It seems like a very nice event!
I really love your videos since your are so excited, nice and honest yet patient about your projects. Oh, and I really like your cat and chickens! And let's have a moment for your filming backgrounds (especially in your sewing phases)... How unreal is that landscape?!?! (bit of envy showing, trying not to become green... ;) ) Please keep on making videos! It's so great contents!

I would love to see more videos like this in the future as well!!

I hope we'll meet again next time in Visby! ;)

First off thank you for the vidio, it was amazing to watch. I've been reenacting for some 20 odd years now and I can't imagine I'll ever "retire". I found my husband in the first medieval group I was in, but have since gone viking. My son had his first market when he was 3 months old and now at three years old, he still loves it and looks forward to being a viking the entire summer. The excitement and love for any historical craft never stops to amaze me and seeing how passionate you are in your vidios inspires me to pick up sowing, needlebinding - anything historical craft really, so thank you for beeing a conduite to creativity
