It's true that there's a shortage of housing and house price/rent has gone up a lot but no student/new migrants sleep on the streets.
Some smart students could earn upto $50/60 per hour on average. $20-30 is pretty standard. Most students work 30-40 hours on average although legal limit is 20 hours during study terms (meaning they may work 40-60 hours during session breaks/holidays)
Now, you workout. Any student may earn $1000/week, on average.
Sharing an average, non luxurious 2/3 bed house/Apartment/unit:
Rent $500-800 per week depending on the location, city etc.
$200-300/week, per person (2-3 persons sharing)
$150-200 Food, Bill's, Transport etc.,
One may still have leftovers of $500/week. Isn't that enough savings? Where else(country) you get this sort of financial freedom?
Q: If the students work 20-40 hours, when do they study?
A: That's a separate matter all together, but, the fact is overseas students e.g., Indian, Nepalese, Bangladeshis, Pakistanis, Sri Lanka's work more than this, thus, earn handsome income to support their living, uni fees as well as support families back home, if required.

More or less information is okay but shortages of accommodation is not that severe. I know lots of student immigrents are now residing in Australia on TR visa categories but with little efforts they are able to manage share accommodation ranges from 130 to 160 Aus dollar per week, though it is expensive than even before pandemic COVID. This price is higher due to Australian economic perspectives and interest rate is higher.

Property like house prices are declining in Australia! If the report is believed to be correct why the prices of property in different major cities are declining? Decline in property price indicates that the demand for housing is decreasing! Supply of housing is apparently inelastic as building new houses requires on average 10 to 12 months! When supply remains inelastic and demand increases, there must be a price and rent hike! But it is not happening in Australia!
