Think of it like those entering construction get paid while they learn the skills to become a tradeperson.. similarly universities use students to do research and developments during their degrees or during periods where they are interns gaining industry experience and will sometimes use students to conduct studies for industries.
Additionally, both the tradesperson and the graduated student build the nation as adults, only one has a millstone of debt that will reduce their contribution.
